Itinerary

Day 1: ANTANANARIVO (ARRIVAL)

On arrival in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, you will be welcomed and transferred to your hotel in the city. Spend the rest of the day at your leisure.

Overnight in Antananarivo

Day 2: ANTANANARIVO ANDASIBE (B)

This morning, begin the day with a drive eastwards through small villages to Andasibe, located in the more humid part of the country that boasts many forests and lakes. Along the way you will see Merina villages in the rocky mountains. Arrive at Andasibe in the afternoon and check-in to the hotel. This evening, depart from the hotel at approximately 19h00 on a night walk around Andasibe to observe night active lemurs and other nocturnal animals.

Overnight in Andasibe

Day 3: ANDASIBE NATIONAL PARK (B)

This morning begins with a visit to Andasibe National Park to see the Indri, the largest lemurs on the island. This unique reserve boasts many endemic fauna and flora and contains a wide variety of orchids, canopy, and endemic animals like chameleons, tenrecs, and many birds.  In the afternoon, visit Andasibe village, home to the Betsimisaraka (“The-Many-Inseparables”) community, the second largest tribe on the island who cultivate rice and live mainly off the forest. This short visit will give you a good insight into how the local people here live.

Overnight in Andasibe

Day 4: ANDASIBE ANTSIRABE (B)

Today drive back to Tana, and head south to Antsirabe, across the highland landscape with its beautiful rice fields on display. The spectacular eroded hills called ‘lavaka’ remind us of the Far East with its rice fields and green landscape with vegetables and fruit trees. You will stop en-route in Ambatolampy for a quick tour of this large agricultural city.  On arrival into Antsirabe you can check into the hotel.  Antsirabe, or ‘the place of salt,’ is an elegant city that is the centre of the beer industry in Madagascar - you can smell the Star Brewery as you enter the town! Founded by Norwegians in 1856, it is the only place on the island that really feels and looks like a European city.

Overnight in Antsirabe

Day 5: ANTSIRABE - RANOMAFANA NATIONAL PARK (B)

After breakfast depart Antsirabe and travel to Ambositra, the centre of Madagascar's wood carving industry. The highlands are characterized by its architecture: the houses are made with ornately carved wooden balconies and shutters with bright colours. Further on you will pass the ‘le col de tapia’, a type of tree resistant to bush fires. The landscape here is still dominated by rice fields, pine forests, eucalyptus trees and rocky mountains.  You will eventually turn off from the main road to reach your final destination for the day: Ranomafana National Park.

Overnight in Ranomafana

Day 6: RANOMAFANA NATIONAL PARK (B)

The approximately 40,000 ha of Parc National de Ranomafana, with its rain forest covered hills and abundant wildlife, has long been considered one of Madagascar’s highlights and is one of the country’s most visited parks. Its entrance lies about 7 km from Ranomafana village, and altitudes in the park range from 800 m to 1200 m. In addition to its densely forested hills, Ranomafana’s terrain is characterised by numerous small streams which plummet down to the beautiful Namorona River. Although much of the region has been logged, the easternmost part of the park retains relatively large areas of primary forest.  Today you can enjoy a long walk in the National Park to spot some of the lemurs, chameleons and other animals that call the park home.

Overnight in Ranomafana

Day 7: RANOMAFANA - FIANARANTSOA ISALO (B)

Returning on the road you came on, leave Ranomafana and visit a local wine farm for wine tasting near Fianarantsoa ‘the city where one learns good things’. It is the gate to the South, the capital of the Betsileo tribes and the centre of the catholic religion. Most of the best schools in the country are also found here. Fianarantsoa is the centre of wine industry - the climate is said not to be ideal for grape vines, but it is a tradition left by the priests and monks who lived in the area of Fianarantsoa. Then, head southwards to Ambalavao, visit the ‘Anteimoro Paper Factory’ which is a vestige of the Arabian civilisation on the island. Continue to Ihosy the capital of the Bara tribes, who are shepherds of Zebu, and further on pass through the mountain chain of Andringitra, which serves as a transition between the dry south and green highlands with its famous ‘3 hillocks’ and its huge ‘archbishop's cape’. Along the way you will see from afar a spectacular huge granite dome with twin rock towers called ‘the gate of the south’, which in fact marks the end of the highland and the beginning of the south. The ‘Bishop's hat’ is another noticeable, imposing formation and a sacred location for the local people - a place where their ancestors chose a collective suicide rather than to give in to the Merina tribes. Then, pass through the huge ‘Plateaux de Horombe’ with its very deep red soil, which reminds us of ‘the no man's land’ and we arrive in Isalo.

Overnight in Isalo

Day 8: ISALO (B)

Today, visit and hike in the Isalo National Park. The park covers an area of 81,540 ha, comprising of the entire stretch of the Isalo massif. This huge mountain is very spectacular with its eroded sandstone elevations. After a 10 minute drive from Ranohira village, walk about 1½ hour to reach the Natural Swimming Pool. Along the way you will see vegetation like Uapaca bojeri, Pachypodium rosulatum or ‘elephant's foot’ and Aloe isaloensis, a native species of aloe endemic to Isalo. The eroded mountains also served as a place where the Bara kept their dead before they could bury them in their actual tombs. Start your climb and reach the massif after walking about 20 minutes, where you will have a spectacular view of the huge sandstone mountains with its beautiful colours and its strange and battered formations creating many different images like ‘the tortoise’, ‘the masks’ and ‘the crocodiles’. You will see small streams of water, and rivers which are marked by lines of brilliant green, generally made up of numerous Pandanus pulcher and the delicate, slim-stemmed, feathery leaved palm Chrysalidocarpus isaloensis. Along the way, there may be sifakas, brown lemurs and ring-tailed lemurs, as well as fifty-five species of birds, lizards and snakes. Finally, reach the swimming pool, with its crystal clear water - a great reward after a long and very hot walk.

Overnight in Isalo

Day 9: ISALO - IFATY (B)

After breakfast, continue to Tuléar, the terminal of the National Road N° 7. This part of your journey brings you to new scenery among the dry forests of the west and the spiny desert of the south. On the way, admire the different ‘Mahafaly tombs’ and the ‘Antandroy tombs’. After a short visit of Tuléar, drive to Ifaty, which lies about 27 km from Tuléar. Due to the bad condition of the road, it will take you about 2½ hours to reach Ifaty, the driest part of the country. Situated in the Deep South, the landscape is dominated by the cactus-like, spiny forest of different euphorbiaceae and didieraceae. Cross the dry and sandy soil where the local people battle to find drinking water. Mangrove trees line the coast alternated by Vezo communities which earn their living from fishing. You will see many small pirogues with men who go out fishing twice a day, while children and women wait on the coast to collect the fish before taking them to Tuléar for sale.

Overnight in Ifaty

Day 10: IFATY (B)

Enjoy your day at leisure. Ifaty lies on the beach and is an ideal place for diving and snorkelling, thanks to its large coral reef, as well as being a popular place for birdwatchers. Many optional excursions are available here: you can visit the ‘Reserve Domergue’, a communal conservation area where you can find baobabs, spiny bush and many different reptiles like ‘chameleon parsoni’, one of the largest chameleons in the world. You can also take a boat trip to see whales, which come to the cool seas of Madagascar to give birth to their young from July to mid-September.  In the afternoon you can walk to the village of Mangily to visit a local school and learn more about the Vezo fishermen's way of life.

Overnight in Ifaty

Day 11: IFATY TULAR ANTANANARIVO (FLIGHT) (B)

Early this morning you will be transferred to the airport for the flight back to Antananarivo (Tana). After checking-in at the hotel you have the afternoon free to explore and to do some sightseeing. The capital of Madagascar is also called the ‘City of Thousands’ and it is where the first King started to unify the different kingdoms of the island. Tana was built in three stages: The high city, the first area occupied during the regal period where the old queen's palace is situated; the mid-city, where all the chic boutiques of the capital are found; and then the low city, which is the commercial area of the town.  You can walk to the high city to see the Rova, the queen's palace, and the house of the first minister during these days, which is now a museum. All of these were built by Frenchman Jean Laborde during the royal period. The mid-city, or the administration area, ends at the Rainiharo tombs and the lower town is situated in the main avenue called ‘L'avenue de l'independence’, which dominated by the railway station.

Overnight in Antananarivo

Day 12: ANTANANARIVO (DEPARTURE)(B)

Today you will be transferred to the airport for your onward flight.

Actually this is a review of A Taste of Portugal. Indus fails to fully answer questions prior to booking. It was not until we booked that we learned that the air travel "included in trip" was the Absolute Cheapest International Flight. We would need to pay $360 extra for luggage which is normally free for international flights. Also, that the cheapest flight WOULD NIOT PERMIT US TO UPGRADE THE INDUS FARE; choosing to upgrade would cost MORE than the full price advertised online. Un fortunately IT COST US $1000 to cancel this ripoff.
Complaints to agent Rachel and Supervisor Tordes was fruitless. Had they answered the one question we asked "Can We Upgrade Flights?" we would not have booked. INDUS FAILED TO DISCLOSE TERMS; it cost us "suckers" $1,000. Richard Supinski

I read the review on "RUN" and she summarized the poor customer service at Indus. Our India trip seemed like a good deal except that the hotels were marginal and totally inconvenient, which meant we had little or no opportunity to do things on our own. They failed to follow their own itinerary, gave us almost no free time, and forced us to go to high pressure sales efforts for marble and tugs that wasted 3 hours. The optional tour descriptions were not accurate. our last 2 days were wasted riding in a bus and then they dumped us off at the airport 10 hours early, with no options offered.

Worse was their customer service, who like "RUN" consisted of the run around from Tanya and Tardes. They ran me around for a month and then blew me off. They don't think much of customer service, it was terrible, they only want your money not your satisfaction. I would avoid Indus at all costs.

This is an addendum to my previous review: The manager, Tordes, spoke with the owner and reached out to me on 3-27; we have agreed upon a mutual resolution and Indus has agreed refunded me in full.

Been a nightmare, and we haven't even left yet. And may not get to if Indus has it''s way. It's a long story, but I will try to keep it short. We booked our tour to Australia back in Nov/Dec 2018, paid the deposit, and then paid the remainder in Jan 2019. Indus sent me a receipt/invoice showing I owed ZERO now for the tour and that it was paid in full. Our tour is set to depart 4-16-19, and since Jan I have been thinking all is well and calling/emailing every so often to ask when our flights/travel docs will be issued. They kept telling me 45 days before the departure. Well guess what? Yesterday Tayna (my tour coordinator) contacts me and tells me that due to a "glitch" in THEIR computer they will not release my tour and travel documents unless I pay almost another $1700!!! And is it now about 3 WEEKS from departure, so I have very little recourse to do much. Seriously?!? I spent hours on email and calls trying to explain that they cannot just arbitrarily try to charge me more, especially since it was THEIR error. They just kept insisting that I had to pay the money or they would not issue my travel documents. I then found a policy, ON THEIR OWN WEBSITE, that says they will not change the price after a final payment is made (which I did back in Jan 2019). I have forwarded all my documents, and the policy from the website, and have asked for either a full refund or issuance of my trip/travel docs. Tanya assured me yesterday that a manager was looking into this, and that I would have an answer by this morning. The next day, I got a call back from Tanya: they are refusing to give a full refund or release the trip unless I pay because they claim they didn't change anything (despite the fact that they are not demanding double what I've already paid) and that the new demand for additional payment does not constitute a price change; despite the documents I have from them with a zero balance since Jan 2019. This looks an awful lot like fraud, extortion, and illegal seizure of funds. I just want my money back at this point because I've been dealing with this since 3-20-19; and I honestly no longer feel that this company would be a safe one to travel with/through. If they acting like this, and doing these very questionable things, before I even leave; what in the world would they try to pull when I am no longer Stateside?!?

"On September 30, we returned from our Indus nine day India Trip which we booked thru Groupon. I must tell you that it surpassed all my expectations and was indeed the trip of a lifetime. Every detail was perfect. We were met promptly at the airport and taken to our hotel Picadilly (which must have the best food in India) by our guide Shelindra / Shalindra ...........who we soon discovered was a well educated, knowledgeable, organized, caring and very competent young man. With him we felt entirely safe at all all times. Moreover he was always ready to answer our questions whether historical, religious or cultural. I wish to record my firm commendation of this guide . Unfortunately I do not know the last name. The hotels were all very clean, comfortable and beautiful, the dinners and breakfasts excellent , the bus clean and cool with a very good driver and assistant who kept us well supplied with water. The tour itself was highly interesting and varied. There was something for everyone. We took part in the optional tours as well and enjoyed every experience. The rickshaw ride in Delhi, the Sikh soup kitchen , Mother Teresa's orphanage, the Taj Mahal and the elephant village stand out. It was also a lovely experience to stay for one night in the Raj of Bharatpur's palace! Even our flights with Etihad Airlines were excellent. I must admit that when we initially booked we were not sure about Indus Travels as we read some negative reviews but seriously nothing was missing in this tour. Congratulations on this very fine Indus tour and
sincere thanks.
Namaste,"

I took this trip in October of 2018. Our tour guide in Spain spoke very poor English, and it was very difficult to understand her. She also did not know much about Spain (she was from Cuba), so we got very little information from her. This was very disappointing. The local day guides were better informed and easier to understand. Expect very long hours on the bus, with short stops along the way. Scenery will be spectacular. Lunches will frequently be at truck stops where you will line up with busloads of other tourists for bathrooms and pre-packaged sandwiches. Day tours will be very crowded, and you will often be herded like cattle through the streets. The ferry ride to Tangiers was fun, but getting on and off the ferry would be difficult for someone who can't get around easily. We saw two people fall and get injured. Our tour guide in Morocco was excellent, and very well informed. We had local guides for the excursions in places we stopped. Expect to be guided through the Suk in Fes to four designated places to shop, and you will not be allowed to shop anywhere else in the Suk. The same is true for the tour of the Suk in Marrakech and the old city in Toledo. Shopping was allowed only at high end places. If you aren't interested in shopping, this will be a big waste of your time. Your main meals will mostly be at mediocre buffets in the hotels you stay in. Drink only bottled water, lots of people in our group got sick, mostly in Morocco. You will be given the opportunity to pay extra (around $110 Euros) for a dinner and show in Fes and Marrakech, both of which were enjoyable, but if you choose only one, do the one in Fes. You will see a lot of both Spain and Morocco. The buildings are breathtaking. You will have both panoramic (bus) tours and walking tours. Walking tours are long, varying 1 - 2 hours. My favorite places were Ronda, Seville, Granada and Toledo. Take advantage of free time in Granada to see the Cathedral. If you do this tour, invest in a guide book to read along with way.
