Itinerary

Day 1: USA /Canada– Depart

Today: Make your way to your gateway airport to board your flight to India. Enjoy in-flight meals and services. Overnight onboard the flight

Day 2: Delhi Arrival

Accommodation:  Overnight in Delhi

Evening: Welcome to Delhi, India! a monumental city with a vibrant mix of old and new teeming bazaars, stately British boulevards, powerful Mughal palaces and forts, and intricate, ethereal towers, temples and tombs. On arrival at Delhi International Airport you will be met and assisted by our company executive and transferred to your hotel.

Day 3: Delhi – Agra

Meals: Breakfast

At hotel (205 KMS / 5 HRS)

Morning: After breakfast, Tour the Old Delhi, the Mughal capital established by Shah Jahan in 1638. At the

famous Red Fort, where Jawaharlal Nehru unfurled the flag of newly-independent India on August 15, 1947, trade the vehicle for bicycle rickshaws. Weave through the warren of crooked, congested alleys off Chandni Chowk, one of India’s oldest and busiest bazaars, where you will see the traditional workmanship for which India is well known and still thrives. Visit Raj Ghat, Mahatma Gandhi’s serene and evocative cremation site and the Jama Masjid, one of the largest mosques in India. The majestic Jama Masjid – meaning world-reflecting’ mosque – is Old Delhi’s principal place of worship, and the largest and most renowned of its kind in India. Built in the 17th century by the Mughal Emperor Shahjahan – who also built the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort – it’s an elaborate structure featuring an expansive geometric base topped with globe-shaped minarets crafted from strips of red sandstone and white marble, and a massive courtyard that can hold up to 25 000 people. This afternoon visit the Qutab Minar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a stunning 240-foot minaret, the tallest in the world, surrounded by an elaborate complex built in the Indo-Islamic architectural tradition.

Afternoon: Drive to the medieval city of Agra, home of the world-famous Taj Mahal. Agra is one of India’s prime tourist destinations for specifically this reason, though its attractions also extend to an array of other impressive historical sights. The Taj, however, is in a league of its own and needless to say is a must-see for any visitor to the city. Commissioned by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the 15th century as a memorial to his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, it is an architectural masterpiece of exquisite craftsmanship and perfect proportions.

Day 4: Agra

Meals: Breakfast

Morning: Early this morning visit the Taj Mahal (closed on Fridays). Often considered the pinnacle of Mughal art in India, the Taj was built by Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. When declaring it a world heritage site, UNESCO described it as “the jewel of Muslim art in India”. There are few words that can describe the magnificence of this monument.  Marvel as light and colors transform this stunning monument in the beautiful rising sun’s rays. Return to the hotel for breakfast. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure or perhaps book an optional tour to Agra Fort. Overnight in Agra.

Optional: Agra Fort - 40 USD / 55 CAD per person

Known as the Red Fort of Agra, this walled imperial city was founded in 1565 by the Emperor Akbar (1556-1605) and is a well-deserving UNESCO World Heritage site, located just 2.5 kilometers from the famous Taj Mahal. Its palaces, grand mosques and elaborate public hall are crafted from pink-red sandstone and are testament to an era when Indo-Muslim art, strongly marked by influences from Persia, was at its height. Emperor Shah Jahan, who built the Taj Mahal for his deceased wife, was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb in Agra Fort. He is said to have died in the Musamman Burj, a marble tower he himself built, with one of the most alluring views of the Taj Mahal.

Optional: Tomb of Itmad-Ud-Daulah- 35 USD / 50 CAD per person

Known as the "Baby Taj", the first Mughal structure totally built from marble. In addition, visit the Sikandra, the sandstone and marble tomb of Akbar which blends Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Christian motifs and styles.

Day 5: Agra-Jaipur

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner

Accommodation: Authentic Rajasthani cuisine at Local Restaurant

Afternoon: Drive to Jaipur en-route visiting Fatehpur Sikri an eerily abandoned capital from the Mughal Empire between 1570 and 1586. Akbar built this city to celebrate the birth of his son and future heir to the throne, Emperor Jahangir. While Akbar is believed to have been illiterate, he took great interest in the arts and architecture; Fatehpur Sikri is one of his masterworks. Sadly, it served as capital for little more than a decade, eventually abandoned for lack of accessible water.

Day 6: Jaipur

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation: Overnight in Jaipur

Morning: Start with an exhilarating excursion to Amber Fort perched on top of a hill. A royal ride on elephant (subject to availability) up the hill like the Maharajas of past times and visit the Jagmandir (the hall of victory). Perched on a hillside on the outskirts of town, the palace was constructed in the 1590s by Maharaja Man Singh, the commander of Akbar’s army, and was largely motivated by the highly defensible location. This is a beautiful and very well-preserved structure, built on four levels and surrounded by ruins, which served as the backdrop for the Mira Nair movie “Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love.”

Afternoon:  View the grand Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds). This magnificent structure was built to allow the royal ladies of the palace to discretely watch the grand processions along the main street, City Palace and impressive Jantar Mantar, an astronomical observatory built in the early 1700s by Maharaja Jai Sing II, the great warrior-astronomer to which this city owes its name. Also enjoy a rickshaw ride through the old part of the Pink city.

Evening: Demonstration of gem-cutting & polishing

Day 7: Jaipur - Delhi / Colombo

Accommodation:  Overnight in Colombo

Meals: Breakfast

Morning: Drive back to Delhi airport for your flight to Colombo. Arrive in Colombo and check-in

On arrival at Colombo International Airport you will be met by our representative and transfer to your hotel. Overnight in Colombo.

Day 8: Colombo / Pinnawala / Dambulla

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation:  Overnight in Dambulla

Morning:  After delicious breakfast, take to the road for a day discovering Sri Lanka’s wildlife and heritage. The first stop is the enchanting Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, which was founded in 1975 with just five calves and has more than 100 today. As well as all the elephants rescued from the rainforests, there have been dozens of births at the shelter, with the first arriving in 1984. Here, they are fed, bathed and allowed to roam freely. Catch sight of them at feeding time – a bottle for the calves and coconut leaves for the adults – and then watch these gentle giants frolicking in the waters of the River Maha Oya at bath time.

After this fun and wild interlude continue to Dambulla. Visit the Dambullala Rock temple. In the city of Dambulla lies a hub which has been treasured by many kings since the 1st century B.C. Today, an icon in the face of Sri Lanka, Dambulla Rock Temple houses some of the most unique drawings in magnificently constructed 5 cave temples flanking the golden temple of Dambulla. Observe how exquisitely cave paintings are done along walls that shelter 150 statues of Lord Buddha. As you enter the retreat, look straight up to the gigantic Buddha statue glittering in gold over a land, which today houses an important junction in the country's economic and cultural uplifting.

Day 9: Dambulla - Polonnaruwa - Sigiriya - Dambulla

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation:  Overnight in Dambulla

Morning: Begin on a high with a climb to the fifth century Sigiriya fortress, which sits atop a rock that

Dramatically rises almost 200 metres above the rainforest King Kashyapa built a citadel at the top of this giant boulder known as the ‘Lion Rock’, which was the innermost stronghold of a vast fortified city. In time it came to be abandoned and forgotten, covered by dense overgrowth until the British encountered it and began a painstaking archaeological exploration. Today, the terraced gardens and cisterns, the moat, the ‘Mirror Wall’ and the fragile frescoes of the ‘heavenly maidens’ among the other remnants of this once thriving city offer only a tantalising indication of what once stood here. Pass through the lion’s ‘belly’ and climb to the top via a spiral staircase that snakes its way around the rock. From the summit, enjoy breathtaking views over the surrounding landscape and beyond into horizon

In the afternoon, discover the well-preserved ruins of the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. Built about 1,000 years ago, it features a large artificial lake, which is still in use and feeds a network of irrigation canals, the remains of a royal palace and a number of temples and administrative buildings. Admire the Gal Viharaya with its four statues of the Buddha carved out of rock, the Audience Hall, the Lotus Bath and the statue of King Parakramabahu. Contemplate also the Shiva Temple, the Lankathilake, the Watadage, the Galpotha and much, much more.

Day 10: Dambulla - Matale – Kandy

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation: Overnight in Kandy

Morning:  After breakfast, we proceed to Kandy. En-route visit a spice and herb garden in Matale Sri Lankan spices such as turmeric, nutmeg, cardamom, cinnamon and lemon grass are considered among the best in the world. Witness a cookery demonstration and learn about the culinary and therapeutic values of these products.

Proceed to Kandy and check in at hotel. Afternoon proceed on a city tour of Kandy.

First developed as a pleasure garden under royalty and later harmonized by the British, the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya - today bundled with the most welcoming facilities located just 4 miles off Kandy - is a flourishing national asset in the Wonder of Asia. Walk into this 147 acre bliss of an experience, passing well-tended lawns, pavilions & an octagon conservatory to be greeted by the vast expanse of a magnificently landscaped lush green turf which will encourage you for an exhilarating break. Our tour with Indus Travels went very well. We visited Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Colombo, Kandy, and Nuwara Eiliya. The Indus team organized a great trip which allowed us to see many sights, shops, and local culture. Our drivers was always prompt, knowledgeable, courteous and safe. Our guides were knowledgeable and also flexible with regards to time we spent exploring each sight. Having the Indus team check on us every couple days and having the ability to contact the representative assigned to us 24/7 was great as it provided safety and comfort throughout our trip. If I were to do another trip to India I would definitely book with Indus again

We had an amazing time travelling around India and Sri Lanka. Our travel consultant at Indus Travels arranged all of our accommodation, our tour guide and our driver, not to mention our flights and accommodation. Indus Team did a wonderful job making this a trip to remember. The accommodation was amazing, very clean and the staff were very friendly, we did the cultural tour of Sri Lanka and it was incredible to see the diversity of such a small island, we would advise for young travellers to stay somewhere with a little bit more atmosphere in Nuwara Eliya. I will definitely be recommending this Tour to all of our friends and family. We had a very authentic experience of Sri Lanka and we met some amazing people. We saw Taj Mahal, Qutab Minar, Amber Fort, and went to see tea and spice plantation, visited local temples etc. It is such a beautiful place to visit and my friends and I had the trip of a lifetime!

We had a great trip to India and Sri Lanka. Transfers at the airports were excellent and the guides in both the countries were knowledgeable and friendly. I am beyond happy , When I read all the reviews I was so scared to even go on the tour. My gosh , It was one of the best trips of my life . Our tour leader was such an amazing guy, very well educated, spoke perfect English and was so funny . We had a driver as well that picked us up from the airport, took us to 4 different cities and dropped us off at the hotel, he was such a hard working and a professional man. He drove at times 6 hours from one city to another and he never complained, he would open and close the door for us. AMAZING Our tour leader took us shopping to an expensive place and a cheaper place and he gave us the option as to what we want to buy with whichever quality. He was so knowledgeable and extremely funny. He was an amazing person. I am beyond thankful for this trip. I would definitely recommend them . I enjoyed every minute of it . The hotels were beyond my expectation. They were brand new, clean and the staff were so professional and friendly. I will book 100% again with them for further trips. Booking was easy. Agents at Indus are extremely professional and helpful. I am beyond happy with the experience. We visited The Qutab Minar, Taj Mahal, The amber fort and may more places. Our tour leader told us about the city, people and the scam artists. I am once again so thankful. Thank you Indus"
