Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi (Arrival)

Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Enjoy the balance of the day at leisure or join the optional excursion for morning arrivals.

Overnight in Nairobi

Optional: Daphne Sheldricks Elephant Orphanage Excursion USD 75 per person

Clients will be transferred to Eka Hotel on arrival for breakfast on own arrangements and then continue with the excursion. Depart to Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage situated on the outskirts of Nairobi (approximately 45 minutes’ drive). The Sanctuary is run by Daphne Sheldrick and is set in the grounds of her house. Here, you will see the orphaned animals and meet the people who handle and care for these animals. It’s an interesting excursion and the team who run the orphanage are always willing to spend time answering any questions guests have to ask. Upon completion, return to hotel or city centre by approx. 12.45 hrs (lunch is not included). It is suggested that due to demand, visits should be pre-booked and at times there may not be any animals in care. Visiting times are limited to approximately one hour and are between 11:00hrs and 12:00 hrs daily.

Optional: Half day out of Africa Excursion USD 90 per person

Follow in the footsteps of Karen Blixen as you travel towards the Ngong Hills, you feel swept immediately onto the film set of Out of Africa the moment you arrive. The old colonial farmhouse is simple, housing a few items that Karen Blixen chose and once enjoyed herself. There are also the colorful gardens to explore, where several old coffee machines have laid untouched for decades. From here visit the Giraffe Centre, where the highly-endangered Rothschild giraffe lives in peace. With an elevated viewing-cum-feeding platform, this tour is wonderful for children.

Day 2:    Nairobi - Masai Mara National Reserve

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Leaving Nairobi after breakfast, you'll travel towards Kenya's fertile highlands and head down the Rift Escarpment on a road built by Italian prisoners of war during World War II. Look for the charming chapel they built at the foot of the escarpment. You'll pass the impressive Longonot earth satellite station as you head across the Valley to Narok, and then travel across acres of wheat and barley, before you reach the Masai Mara in time for lunch. Following lunch and a siesta, there is an afternoon game drive returning to the lodge as the sun sets.

Overnight in Masai Mara area

Day 3: Masai Mara National Reserve

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

After an early breakfast, clients will depart on a morning game drive, returning to the lodge for lunch. After a siesta set off for an afternoon game drive and visit to the Masai Village, returning to the lodge as the sun sets.

Overnight in Masai Mara area

Optional: Early morning Masai Mara Hot Air Balloon Safari

USD 475 per person

This is the ultimate way to view wildlife in Africa. You will be woken before dawn (between 04:30 and 05:30 am) and then driven to a remote location. Taking off as the sun rises, you will drift quietly above plains, rivers and forests while gazing at spectacular scenery and with luck, take some incredible photographs. The flight is approximately one hour and gives a ‘birds-eye’ experience to game-watching which many find to be the climax of their safari. On landing in the middle of nowhere there will be a full bush-style breakfast set up served with Champagne, with a table decked in silver cutlery, fresh Kenyan coffee, tea and fruits. It is a truly magical experience.

Recommendations: Flat comfortable shoes should be worn. A jacket, sweater or fleece which can be easily removed during the flight as the sun warms up the air is ideal. Sun hats & sun glasses are also recommended.

Day 4: Masai Mara – Lake Nakuru

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Leaving the Masai Mara after breakfast, travel across the ‘breadbasket’ of Kenya, where acres of wheat and barley litter the landscape as you head north to Narok, the district headquarters of this part of Maasailand. Now travel across the vast plains on the floor of the Rift Valley, keeping an eye out for herds of giraffe and gazelle as you head up the Mai -Mahiu, before arriving at Lake Nakuru around midday.  Once in the park, view game en route to the lodge, arriving to the lodge as the sun sets. The national park, known for its birdlife, offers a possibility to view flamingoes.  It is also home to Black and White rhinos as well as the endangered Rothschild Giraffe.

Overnight in Lake Nakuru area

Day 5: Lake Nakuru - Amboseli National Park

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

After an early breakfast continue to Lake Naivasha for a boat ride. Later, leaving the Rift Valley behind, proceed to Nairobi for an early lunch (or picnic lunch dependent on road conditions). Later head south towards Amboseli arriving at your lodge by late afternoon. Arid looking as Amboseli is, it has historically supported both game and the Maasai that kept their herds of cattle here. It is thanks to the waters that run off Africa's greatest mountain that the apparently dry Amboseli, Kenya's first game sanctuary is able to support its wildlife. Mount Kilimanjaro broods high over Amboseli, generally cloaked by clouds but appearing in all its snow-shrouded magnificence from time to time. Kilimanjaro was once part of Kenya, but on the marriage of Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany Queen Victoria gifted it to her beloved grandson, whose colony Tanzania then was, as the perfect wedding present.

Overnight at Amboseli National Park area

Day 06: Amboseli National Park

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Depart the lodge after a sumptuous breakfast for a full day game drive, enjoy a hot picnic lunch at a picnic site returning to the lodge at 1600hrs. Mt Kilimanjaro now provides water for the park, wonderful views and, of course, the most glorious background for animal photography. There has been serious erosion in the park. Elephant feeding habits combined with light soil have made serious inroads in the Amboseli vegetation. Nonetheless, there are still high numbers of the elephant for which the park is famous, and it is here that much research has been done on the largest land mammal. Indeed, a cursory examination will show that humankind is not the only animal to destroy its own environment. The grasslands in the park can be undeniably lovely when made verdant by the rains and the three major swamps could star in a dinosaur movie. The swamps on the east of the park attract wildebeest, zebra and antelope with the predators that live off them, chiefly lion which tend to be easy to view here. In the south, Enkongo Narok swamp attracts hippos to the larger pools and plenty of buffalo, buck and teeming birdlife including the jacanas that pick their way elegantly and carefully. Giraffe are here and in areas still sufficiently treed there are leopard. Cheetah, caracal and civet may be seen. In the west of the park lies Lake Amboseli, a seasonal soda lake, sometimes with flamingos.

Overnight at Amboseli National Park area

Day 7: Amboseli – Lake Manyara

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

After breakfast, continue your journey to the Tanzania border post and then on to Arusha for lunch.  After lunch, drive across the Masai Steppe to the Great Rift Valley. The main eastern Rift Valley runs from the Jordan Valley in the north, takes in the whole of the Red Sea, sheers through Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Malawi, and finally reaches the sea near the Zambezi Delta. In places, the walls of the Rift rise little more than 30 metres (100ft) above the valley floor, elsewhere, steep cliffs rise sharply to 1,200 metres (4,000ft) above the floor. In addition to the towering walls that contain it, the base of the Kenyan Rift Valley is studded with steaming geysers and dormant volcanoes, relicts of the violent tectonic activity that is also responsible for such montane giants as Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya and Elgon. Your hotel is perched high on the rim overlooking the park below.

Overnight in Lake Manyara area

Day 8: Lake Manyara – Serengeti

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

After breakfast enter your safari vehicle and spend the morning exploring and driving through Lake Manyara National Park. About midday return to the lodge for lunch and then depart for Serengeti National Park with some game viewing en route arriving at your lodge as the sun begins to set. Serengeti National Park is undoubtedly the most famous wildlife sanctuary in the world, unequalled for its natural beauty and the greatest concentration of plains game anywhere. Tanzania's oldest and most popular national park, also a world heritage site and recently proclaimed a 7th world wide wonder, the Serengeti is famed for its annual migration, when some six million hooves pound the open plains, as more than 200,000 zebras and 300,000 Thomson's gazelles join the wildebeest’s trek for fresh grazing. Yet even when the migration is quiet, the Serengeti offers arguably the most scintillating game-viewing in Africa: great herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephant and giraffe, and thousands upon thousands of elands, topi, kongoni, impala and Grant’s gazelle.

Overnight in Serengeti National Park area

Day 9: Serengeti National Park

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Spend the whole day spend in the Serengeti National Park with morning and afternoon game drive only returning to the hotel for lunch and in time for dinner. The spectacle of predator versus prey dominates Tanzania’s greatest park. Golden-maned lion prides feast on the abundance of plain grazers. Solitary leopards haunt the acacia trees lining the Seronera River, while a high density of cheetahs prowls the south-eastern plains. Almost uniquely, all three African jackal species occur here, alongside the spotted hyena and a host of more elusive small predators, ranging from the insectivorous aardwolf to the beautiful serval cat. Overnight in Serengeti National Park area

Day 10: Serengeti National Park - Ngorongoro Crater

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

After breakfast, you depart for Ngorongoro with a picnic lunch viewing game across the vast Serengeti plains, after a picnic lunch you continue towards the crater with a short visit of a Masai Village. Late afternoon, continue to your lodge, set high on the rim of Ngorongoro Crater for dinner and overnight. This caldera supports around 20,000 large animals, including the world’s densest population of lions and spotted hyenas, several massive old tuskers, and some of East Africa’s last black rhinos.

Overnight in Ngorongoro area

Day 11: Ngorongoro Crater

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

A highlight awaits you this morning as you depart to explore what is commonly referred to as the World’s largest natural wildlife zoo. After breakfast, descend with a picnic lunch through the early morning mists and 2,000 feet into the crater. The Ngorongoro Crater is a world heritage site, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and commonly referred to as the 8th wonder of the world. Due to its size and diversity, the crater floor is comprised of several distinct areas, ranging from forest, swamps, lakes and springs, to open grassland and some sandy dunes. It’s an awesome wildlife experience. The 2,000 feet high walls of the approximately 10-mile-wide crater create a natural amphitheatre for the densest populations of large animals anywhere. It is a microcosm of the vast Serengeti National Park and in one day it is possible to see a staggering array of East African wildlife including all the big carnivores. The crater lives up to its infamous reputation with abundant and easily accessible wildlife and offers a chance to see lion, hyena or cheetah in action. The Crater is truly awe-inspiring and will surely be one of the highlights of your safari. The rim of the Ngorongoro Crater ranges in altitude from about 7,000 feet to 8,000 feet. Down below, the relatively flat floor of the Crater rests at an elevation of about 5,500 feet. The Ngorongoro Crater's rich soils and abundant, year-round water provide an ideal habitat for a variety of animals. The Crater is not a self-contained ecosystem and some animals do migrate in and out but only in small numbers. Most of the animals in the Crater are resident and remain year-round. There are approximately 20,000 large mammals at any given time within the Crater walls. Return back to the lodge in time for lunch. You return to the lodge in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight.

Overnight in Ngorongoro area

Day 12: Ngorongoro Crater - Tarangire National Park

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Departing Ngorongoro Crater after breakfast and head south east en route to Lake Manyara, Mto wa Mbu village and Tarangire beyond. Through the highlands and the Karatu district, you’ll view the scenic wheat plains and coffee plantations here before journeying down the spectacular escarpment where you turn south on to the main Arusha – Dodoma road and into the park. From here to the lodge, you’ll enjoy a game drive en route to your lodge. After lunch and perhaps a swim, the remainder of the afternoon will be spent on a game drive.

Overnight in Tarangire National Park area

Day 13: Tarangire National Park – Nairobi Departure

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Depart Tarangire after breakfast and drive back to Arusha arriving in time for lunch. After lunch, you continue the journey by road to Nairobi arriving in Nairobi late afternoon and proceed for dinner in Nairobi city centre before drop off at JKIA airport or City Centre Hotel at around 07:00 pm.

Return flights should be booked after 2300 hours.

Kenya was absolutely breathtaking! The sheer amount of animals we saw on this trip was so much more that what we expected. We were taken aback by how diverse and rich the biodiversity and landscape is. This tour is a gem for those who love animals and is definitely a once in a lifetime experience.

Our tour with Indus Travels went very well. We visited Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Colombo, Kandy, and Nuwara Eiliya. The Indus team organized a great trip which allowed us to see many sights, shops, and local culture. Our drivers was always prompt, knowledgeable, courteous and safe. Our guides were knowledgeable and also flexible with regards to time we spent exploring each sight. Having the Indus team check on us every couple days and having the ability to contact the representative assigned to us 24/7 was great as it provided safety and comfort throughout our trip. If I were to do another trip to India I would definitely book with Indus again

We had an amazing time travelling around India and Sri Lanka. Our travel consultant at Indus Travels arranged all of our accommodation, our tour guide and our driver, not to mention our flights and accommodation. Indus Team did a wonderful job making this a trip to remember. The accommodation was amazing, very clean and the staff were very friendly, we did the cultural tour of Sri Lanka and it was incredible to see the diversity of such a small island, we would advise for young travellers to stay somewhere with a little bit more atmosphere in Nuwara Eliya. I will definitely be recommending this Tour to all of our friends and family. We had a very authentic experience of Sri Lanka and we met some amazing people. We saw Taj Mahal, Qutab Minar, Amber Fort, and went to see tea and spice plantation, visited local temples etc. It is such a beautiful place to visit and my friends and I had the trip of a lifetime!

I recently booked the best of Peru with Indus and had a fabulous time! It was our first time in South America so I was unsure but our Indus consultant told us great things about Peru and oh! was she right! Me and my friend both loved Miraflores in Lima- it felt very safe to walk around the city. But my favorite part of the trip was Sacred Valley where we got to stay in a very peaceful hotel with a stunning view of the mountains- simply incredible! Although at first I though the itinerary will be hectic, the tour was actually very pleasant with some time to visit on your own or relax- needed with the bit of jetlag! I came back very happy with both Indus service and the tour and I would recommend you 100% to book your tour with Indus- I am looking already at my next holiday with them. I have not taken Peru, Argentina and Brazil but if it is half as good as our Peruvian tour then you are bound to have a great trip!
