The remainder of the day is at leisure to immerse yourself into the city's history, culture and gastronomy. You could do that literally with a visit to a thermal bath - an institution in Budapest! Or perhaps spend time browsing the boutiques of Vaci Street or relax in sidewalk café. In the evening, you could stop for an aperitif at a typical ‘Pálinka' bar in the old city.(BB / MT)

Day 5: Along the Danube to Szentendre and on to Stately Vienna

Set out past the remains of the Roman settlement of Aquincum and along the Danube to the picturesque riverside village of Szentendre. The Austrian capital boasts a varied culinary landscape so in the evening, you can choose from a selection of restaurants for your dining pleasure.(BB / DA)

Day 6: Vienna and the Habsburgs

Much of Vienna's present day charm is due to the long reign of the Habsburgs, so in the morning, join a Local Expert for a private visit of Maria Theresa's Schönbrunn Palace and formal gardens. Then get your camera ready for a drive around the famous Ring Road. This grand boulevard, built along the lines of the old city walls, showcases many of the capital's architectural masterpieces, including the Opera House, magnificent Hofburg Imperial Residence and Parliament Building. The afternoon is at leisure.(BB)

    Day 7: Vienna at Leisure

(Relaxed Start) Take the day to discover the regal grandeur of Vienna at your own pace. Perhaps start with St. Stephen’s Cathedral, one of Europe’s great Gothic structures? Start with the 1,000-year-old Prague Castle, where you can admire the stained glass of St Vitus Cathedral and enjoy amazing views over the Old Town. Finish in the Old Town Square where the mechanical antics of the Astronomical Clock's glockenspiel delight onlookers each hour. The city is then all yours to explore. Maybe take a river cruise through the heart of the city or walk in the footsteps of kings along the Royal Route? Czechs are passionate about their beer so be sure to try the local lagers, along with the Czech cuisine.(BB)

    Day 10: Prague at Leisure

Excellent guide, who went out of his way to show us places not on the official tour. Tour was educational and well worth while. However, some of the buffet meals were below your standard.

Generally the Itinerary was very good. However there was far to much emphasis and pressure on the shopping expedition

While the guide was knowledgeable about his country and culture his people skills were wanting. he seemed most interested in gaining commissions from preferred traders and meeting the requirements of those who wanted a shopping experience than ensuring that the majority of the group who were more interested in actually touring. Most hotels were closer to average rather than high end. The hotel on the first and last night did not even have a bar facility. The driver was excellent but the bus had absolutely minimal storage overhead and not even a bungee bag on seat backs to manage some personal items

Insight always chooses the best available hotels in the area. Our tour director. Tom Hogan, was excellent. His knowledge of Ireland was comprehensive and interesting making our journey more enjoyable and fun. His diplomacy and sense of humour made the tour one of the best bus tours we have experienced. Thanks so very much Tom. We look forward to our next Insight holiday.
