Itinerary

Day 1 Cairo

Salaam Aleikum! Welcome to Egypt. Meet your group and leader at a welcome meeting at 5 pm tonight, so make sure you've insurance details for yourself and your kid(s) to pass on. Dispense with the formalities then head out on the first of many Egyptian meals as a group. For those who arrive early and have free time, there are plenty of things to see and do. Travel along the river by felucca, head out to explore the markets, or, if the hustle and bustle of the city is too much, catch the metro into the oldest part of the city, the Coptic Christian sector. The latter is a haven of peace and quiet, with narrow cobbled streets and beautiful old churches.

Day 2 Cairo/ overnight train

Explore the amazing Pyramids of Giza which have stood tall for 4,500 years. Afterwards, make your way to the Egyptian Museum, home to one of the world's great collections of antiquities. Wander the treasure-filled halls of the museum, and be sure to check out the Mummies Hall (optional) for a close encounter with some of the country’s most important queens and pharaohs. You'll have plenty of time to explore the sites today (approximately 3 hours for the pyramids and 3 hours for the museum). In the evening you will board an overnight train to the southern city of Aswan (approximately 13 hours).

Day 3 Aswan

Arrive in Aswan in the morning. Here the Nile runs deep and fast between granite rocks as the desert encroaches on the river. Even to travellers in ancient times, Aswan was known as the legendary gateway to the kingdom of Nubia. Today it is still something of a frontier town, where the Arab Middle East meets Africa. You will have the rest of the morning free to explore Aswan, have a swim in the hotel pool or simply sit back and enjoy the view of the Nile. In the early afternoon we will take a water taxi over to the Temple of Isis at Philae. The Temple of Isis (the Goddess of health, marriage and wisdom), which was rescued from the rising waters of the Nile and relocated on Philae Island. It's a marvel of decorative pylons featuring some of Egypt's finest carvings – definitely one of the real gems of Upper Egypt. In the early evening you will take a trip across the river to a Nubian village and enjoy dinner at one of the local houses. .

Day 4 Aswan

Today is free for you to explore Aswan, or the surrounding area, at your family’s preferred pace. You might want to visit the magnificent temples of Abu Simbel, located near the Sudan border. These two temples – one for Ramses II and another he dedicated to his wife Queen Nefertari – were cut into the cliff face in the 13th century and remain impressive in their scope and detail. If you would prefer to stay in Aswan and get a taste of contemporary Egypt there is plenty to do. The relaxed atmosphere makes Aswan a great city to wander and watch the boats cruise the Nile, plus there’s always the hotel pool nearby where you and the kids can cool off. Abu Simbel: If you wish to visit Abu Simbel you can opt to fly (40 mins each way) or take a bus (3 hours each way). Flights should be booked in advance online through EgyptAir: http://www.egyptair.com/English. Prices vary throughout the season, depending on the day of the week you fly and how far in advance you book, but expect to pay between US$250-300 pp. It's recommended to book the early flight and visit Abu Simbel at sunrise to avoid the heat. Alternatively, a bus can be organised locally via your leader (US$100 pp). It is an early start (between 5-6am) and you will return to Aswan in the early afternoon (1-2pm). Ask your leader for details on how to arrange a visit, but be aware you need a minimum of four people to participate in this optional activity.

Day 5 Felucca Sailing

Climb aboard a felucca (traditional wooden boat with a broad canvas sail) with your family and spend a day on the Nile River and an evening under the stars. Watch the sun set across the river and relax, taking in life along the water. While there's no cabin or enclosed section on the felucca, (you will sleep outside, on a mattress on the deck) a canopy offers shade and protection from the elements. Conditions are basic, but there is a clean toilet on board and the crew will prepare all your meals. While blankets are provided, a sleeping sheet is recommended. It is highly recommended your bring with you some books, games or art supplies for the family while sailing along the Nile.

Day 6 Luxor

Rise and shine - have breakfast on the felucca before transferring by bus to Luxor (approximately 4 hours), tracing the path of the Nile to the north. Upon arrival you'll have time to relax at the hotel before we head over to the Karnak Temple in the afternoon. Karnak Temple is perhaps the most impressive of all the ancient Pharoahs' monumental works. One of the world's most celebrated temple complexes, Karnak is a house of the gods built over a period of some 200 years. Your guided tour of this vast temple of impressive pylons, obelisks and chapels will reveal its finest sections, such as the Avenue of Sphinxes and the Great Temple of Amun.

Day 7 Cairo

Embrace another early start, cross the Nile and drive to the secluded Valley of the Kings. Spend around two hours exploring this vast burial ground with a guide and wonder at some of the exquisitely decorated tombs of ancient rulers. It is here that the burial site of the boy-king, Tutankhamun, was re-discovered by British archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922. If you'd like to organise a visit to King Tut's tomb today, this can be arranged with advance notice – ask your leader for details at the beginning of the tour. On your way back to the river, spend about a hour at the funerary temple of Queen Hatshepsut, Egypt's first female ruler. Take a late afternoon flight back to Cairo. After you've settled into the hotel, why not head out for a final dinner with your fellow family travellers.

Day 8 Cairo

You adventure comes to an end after breakfast today. There are no activities planned for the final day and you are able to depart your accommodation at any time after check-out.

Fantastic Trip in Southern Africa

We did this trip, Explore Southern Africa, from Aug 9 - 26 this year and we thought it was probably our most memorable trip ever. The variety of wildlife (we saw the big 5 plus giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, hippos, hyenas, wildebeests, impalas, baboons, ...) and our proximity to them that we experienced was unparalleled. The scenery was like nothing we had ever experienced before (our first time anywhere in Africa). Although it was winter time there when we went and many areas were looking very dry it was an experience not to be missed. Additionally we were made to feel welcome everywhere that we went. The highlights of the trip for us would be the two days to the Okavango Delta, the optional game drive through Chobe National Park and day 13 with our guide tracking rhinos in Matabos and going to the African village. Our tour leader, cook and drivers were excellent as were our co-travellers. The meals that were prepared for us tasted great, were well balanced and no one ever left hungry. The 2 person tent accommodations weren't the most luxurious but they allowed one to stay right in the "middle of the action" with the animals in close proximity to our overnight homes. This being the case, we never felt unsafe in our tents at any point. The overlander vehicle didn't have air conditioning, as is standard, however if you made sure to open windows for air circulation during the drive the heat wasn't so bad. If one is prepared to put up with these few inconveniences and willing to help out with camp set up, vehicle clean up, and meal clean up afterwards (this is a participatory type of trip where certain tasks are required of the travellers) it is an experience not to be missed. It all makes one more appreciative of the luxuries that we have at home that many do not have in South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe.

The Trip from Hell
Avoid Intrepid Travel!
My daughter and I recently returned from a tour in Central Asia booked through Intrepid Travel. After about 24 hours of travel, we were not met at the airport nor did we have a room. After getting that straightened out, the next morning we were informed that the vehicle we would be traveling in had no air conditioning. The temperatures were over 100 degrees to about 115 degrees or more. The heat was unbearable and no one inquired about how we were coping or their health. Our welfare was ignored. So ww left the tour early so we wouldn’t have to camp in the desert for two nights.
The tour leader booked our flights to Istanbul but neglected to tell us we would have to rebook our flights to Los Angeles. Upon arriving at the airport in Istanbul, we were told we couldn’t get on the flight. New tickets cost us $1800 EACH!
Intrepid Travel has refused to take responsibility or provide any satisfaction in this matter.

Even the cook made sure my picky teenager would like his breakfast by fixing him his scrambled eggs the way he likes them.

I’ve been dreaming of this trip with my son for a long time and I’m glad I booked it with you guys! We’ll cherish the memories we made for ever

If you’re looking for a real adventure kinda trip then go with Intrepid!

Perfect Itinerary, Guide spoiled a lot of the trip

The perfect itinerary allowed us to efficiently visited all the top sites with great lodgings. Unfortunately, the guide cut short stops at the Bahai Gardens, Acco, Tel Aviv, and Jerrico on days when we got to our hotel room in the early afternoon--all group members were upset by this. This Palestinian Christian guide emphasized unimpressive churches and minimized all sights that were secular, Muslim, Jewish, ancient, or other faiths. He made bizarre strident political comments about how great Mao Zedong was, praised Putin, said Palestinian people "had never done anything wrong in their history," talked about the Jews killing Jesus--all with a lot of anger. He knew a lot of about Christinaity, not much about anything else. He did a lot to make what could have been the perfect trip, mediocre.

(I would recommend the trip, but only if I knew it was a different guide.)

I loved the history of this trip, as well as the spectacular scenery. Our guide was knowledgeable and helpful. Having arrangements made for places to stay and transport, plus some activities, but with plenty of free time, made for a perfect balance for me. Breakfasts were delicious!

Guides

All Intrepid group trips are accompanied by one of our group leaders. The aim of the group leader is to take the hassle out of your travels and to help you have the best trip possible. Intrepid endeavours to provide the services of an experienced leader. However, due to the seasonality of travel, rare situations may arise where your leader is new to a particular region or training other group leaders. Your leader will provide information on the places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for things to do and see, recommend great local eating venues and introduce you to our local friends. While not being guides in the traditional sense, you can expect them to have a broad general knowledge of the countries visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious and social aspects. At Intrepid we aim to support local guides who have specialised knowledge of the regions we visit - and who better to hear it from than the locals themselves? If you're interested in delving deeper into the local culture then your leader can recommend a local guide service in most of the main destinations on your trip.
