Short Description

Iceland really is a magical and mystical place. The natural geological wonders, landscapes, birds and ocean life are unforgettable!

Iceland is a great place for walking and experiencing amazing landscapes. We will see marine wildlife, birds and horses. Icelandic horses are especially beautiful. On this trip we will visit Iceland for New Year's Eve. It will be dark a lot of the time, but we will have great opportunities to see the northern lights and an amazing winter landscape. There are links to some of the places that we go to within the daily itinerary schedule. The itinerary is just a brief summary.

We start out this 7 day trip in Reykjavik. This is a great area for birding and walking the shoreline. Reykjavik is a great city for art and culture. We will also spend two days in a small village called Akranes along the west coast.  We will spend our last night back in Reykjavik.

Groups are between 25-60 people, typically ~30-40. Usually there will be many opportunities to split off and enjoy meals and excursions in smaller groups. This is the most economical way to travel, saving up to 40% versus booking the same itinerary yourself.

Itinerary

Day 1: Fly to Iceland

Flights are usually overnight with arrival on day two.

Day 2: Arrive in Reykjavik

Flights usually arrive in the early morning. We will be flying into the international airport at Keflavik. It is a 45 minute bus ride to Reykjavik from the airport. We will be staying at Eric the Red Guesthouse for the next two nights. We like Eric the Red because it is a traditional Icelandic guest house. It has a great location right in downtown Reykjavik. What is especially nice is that the house is full of art work and the breakfast is great. Breakfast is a traditional Icelandic offering of fish, cheese, meats, breads, cereals, etc. The owners live on site and are very interesting to talk with. In Iceland the hot water is all from the thermal heat coming from the ground. So there is always plenty of hot, hot water. Possible dining choice is The Three Coats.

Day 3: Reykjavik

Reykjavik is the capital of Iceland and is rich in maritime history and close to numerous geological wonders. Options for today are hiking along the peninsula and checking out the shops and museums of Reykjavik. In the late afternoon we will be taking a boat cruise to see the Imagine Peace monument on Viðey Island.  We will be having our New Year’s Eve dinner at the Mar Restaurant.  After dinner it will be fireworks, bonfires and fun to ring in the New Year!

Day 4: Akranes

In the afternoon, it is a short one hour ride to the beautiful seaside town of Akranes.  We will be staying at the Kirkjuhvoll Guesthouse in this small fishing village.  We will be spending the day walking the shoreline, visiting the local sights, relaxing and enjoying the moments. Akranes is a good location to view the northern lights.

Day 5: Akranes (birding and adventure day)

Today will be a full day Icelandic adventures.  We will be taking a day tour to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula to visit the picturesque Snæfellsjökull Glacier and in the evening, a visit to the local geo-thermal pool to relax. After dinner we will walk along the shore and look for the northern lights.

Day 6: Akranes (birding and adventure day)

Today there will be time to visit the local museum, go for a one hour horseback ride and in the evening, a visit to the local geo-thermal pool to relax. After dinner we will walk along the shore and look for the northern lights.

Day 7: Reykjavik

We will be travelling back to Reykjavik and staying at Reykjavík Marina Hotel for our last night. Dinner at The Grill Market.

Day 8: Fly Home

Flights usually leave in the late afternoon. So on the way to the airport, we will be visiting the wonderful and amazing thermal pool called the Blue Lagoon for a swim and a soak.

The weather in December is a combination of sunny weather changing back and forth to gloomy weather and snow. In Iceland, that is pretty much how it goes. The island gets a lot of snow and December is a snowy month. The average high temperatures are in the 30'and the lows in the 20's. On winter solstice, the sun rises at about 11:30am and sets at 3:30pm. There is about 4 hours of light, which is a beautiful twilight during midday.
