Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Peru!

Accommodation: Wyndham Costa del Sol

International Arrival in Lima

You will find us waiting for you when your international flight arrives in Lima. Look for the Kuoda sign with your name and the smile. We will escort you to your hotel adjacent to the airport, check you in, and help you get settled. You’ll then be able to rinse away the feeling of a long flight and enjoy a good night’s rest!

Day 2: Over the Andes to the Sacred Valley

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

Accommodation: Tambo del Inka, 01 Superior Deluxe Room

Flight from Lima to Cusco, Private Car to the Sacred Valley

You will wake up refreshed and enjoy a complimentary breakfast in your hotel before we escort you back to the airport for your morning flight to Cusco. Watch the windows as the desert coast rises into the snow-capped peaks of the Andes! We will be waiting for you when touch down at our Andean airport and will bring you to the historic city center of Cusco for a delicious lunch. Then, before you can feel the altitude, we’ll whisk you into the Sacred Valley.

Just 45 minutes outside of Cusco, true Peruvian countryside will stretch away on either side of you, cows and sheep grazing tranquilly road-side. Impossibly steep peaks rise in the distance. Your journey will take you first to the Awanakancha Living Museum, where you will see traditional weavers at work and come face to face with llamas, alpacas and other Andean camelids. Next, you’ll stop at the vibrant market in the pueblo of Pisac, where locals come from miles around to sell their wares. Upon conclusion of your market visit we’ll bring you to your hotel in the heart of the Sacred Valley. Remember, your Kuoda guide and driver are at your disposal today – please feel free to stop for photos, stretch your legs and breathe in the clear mountain air!

Day 3: Uncovering Ollantaytambo’s Secrets

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Accommodation: Tambo del Inka, 01 Superior Deluxe Room

Hike through Patacancha, Visit Ollantaytambo’s Iconic Ruins, and Enjoy a Peruvian Feast! Today’s journey through the Sacred Valley of the Incas will start with a drive through the breathtaking Patacancha Valley. At the ruins of Pumamarca we’ll begin our hike down a pre-Columbian trail, following irrigation canals that line terraced fields still in use today. After approximately two hours of hiking, we’ll find ourselves in the Incan town of Ollantaytambo, one of the few remaining places in Peru that retains its original Incan urban planning. You’ll note still-functioning street canals, multi family houses with secret interior courtyards and iconic Incan trapezoidal doors! Here we’ll visit the Incan fortress perched on the mountainside overlooking the sleepy pueblo, and learn about nearby stone quarries and the pivotal Incan battle fought here. We hope you worked up an appetite while hiking, because next on the schedule is a true Peruvian feast: the traditional Pachamanca! The centuries-old Pachamanca tradition involves marinating lamb, pork, chicken, and potatoes in a variety of Andean ingredients and cooking them to perfection in an underground oven. You’ll witness each step of the process: how the oven is prepared, how white-hot stones are layered, and how the feast materializes before your eyes! While waiting for your feast to roast, make sure to wander through the grounds’ organic garden, smell the fresh-roasted coffee produced by the farm’s head roaster, and sample some of the varieties of cañazo (a local Andean spirit) that are produced on-site at the one-of-a-kind distillery. Upon completion of your tour, we will bring you back to your hotel for an evening spent at leisure.

Day 4: The Lost City of the Incas – Machu Picchu

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo,01 Superior Deluxe Room

Morning Train through the Cloud Forest, Private Tour of Machu Picchu Prepare for a climactic day! In the morning, we will board the train in Ollantaytambo for our journey to Machu Picchu. Watch the cloud jungle pass by through the large glass windows! After a bus ride to the gates of this wonder of the world, you will then ascend stone steps, through heavy tree cover to finally emerge at the top of the world – Machu Picchu. The incredible Inca stone construction will be spread below, alternately hidden and revealed by clouds. Your expert guide will give you a private tour of the ancient city. Lunch will be served on-site at the Sanctuary Lodge whenever you get hungry. Afterwards, feel free to return to the site to continue exploring, or descend to your hotel. Upon returning for an evening in Aguas Calientes, your guide will give you advice and answer questions about how you might use your following free day. Enjoy an excellent dinner on-site at your hotel and fall into bed, lulled to sleep by the sound of the cloud forest around you.

Day 5: Machu Picchu on Your Terms

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation: Casa Cartagena Boutique Hotel, 01 LP Suite

A Free Day to Explore the Ancient City at Your Own Pace This is your day to relax and enjoy Machu Picchu. The adventurous can hike the steep Huayna Picchu sugarloaf peak for the postcard view of the city, or those wishing to go at a calmer pace can continue to explore the far reaches of the citadel, perhaps visiting the Inca Bridge. Your guide from the previous day will have left you with plenty of suggestions for how best to make the most out of your day exploring Peru’s world wonder. Machu Picchu entrances, Huayna Picchu entrances, and round-trip bus tickets are included today. In the afternoon, you will descend to Aguas Calientes for your return train. We will be waiting in the station for you and will bring you to your hotel in the historic city center of Cusco for an evening at leisure.

Day 6: Exploring the Imperial City of Cusco

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation: Casa Cartagena Boutique Hotel, 01 LP Suite

Private Tour of Cusco

After breakfast on your own, your private guide will proceed to illuminate Cusco’s rich tapestry woven by its inviting cobblestone streets, charming neighborhoods, and astounding landmarks. You’ll begin on-foot, and then be met by your private car toward the end of your tour. Your first stop of the day will be to the Santo Domingo monastery, perched atop the most sacred of Incan sites, the Qoricancha temple of the sun. Once bathed in 24-karat gold long-since pilfered by Spanish conquistadors, this temple is now an astounding blend of Incan stonemasonry and colonial architecture. From there you’ll stop in at the colonial Cathedral in the Plaza de Armas, before climbing up to the bohemian neighborhood of San Blas, known for its whitewashed adobe buildings and quaint blue balconies, home to generations of renowned Cusco artisans. Next, journey into the hills above the Plaza de Armas to visit the Incan fortress at Sacsayhuaman, the red fort at Pukapukara and the fountains at Tambomachay!

Upon conclusion of your tour your guide will leave you with suggestions as to where you find a delicious, local lunch, and you’ll have the remainder of the afternoon to explore the Imperial City at your leisure.

Day 7: From the Imperial City to the Banks of the Amazon

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner

Accommodation: Aria Amazon, 01 Suite

Fly From Cusco to Iquitos via Lima, and Begin your Amazon River Cruise!

After breakfast, we will escort you to the Cusco airport for your morning flight to Lima. Watch the windows as the snow-capped peaks of the Andes become coastal desert! Your Kuoda Lima host will meet you upon arrival and assist you with transferring to your second flight of the day to Iquitos. When you arrive, the Aqua Expeditions team will be waiting to bring you to a very comfortable, air conditioned bus. Ninety minutes later, you’ll arrive in Nauta, where the Aria Cruise lays at anchor, awaiting your arrival. Enjoy happy hour just before dusk, as the Aria starts its journey into the rainforest. After you sample Peru’s famous pisco sour, your dinner will be served on the ship’s deck. On the top observation deck, your guides will use charts and short videos to conduct a brief safety orientation, outlining details of your journey including the places you will visit, the wildlife you will see, as well as a summary of the history and geography of the Amazon basin. Finally, under the beauty of an Amazonian night sky filled with hundreds of stars or perhaps a full moon, cruise off into the Amazon while enjoying an after-dinner drink.

Day 8: Jungle Exploration

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner

Accommodation: Aria Amazon, 01 Suite

Walk the Amazon and Meet the Locals

Dawn and dusk are ideal times for nature observation, and an early rise is therefore highly recommended. Aboard the skiffs, you will explore a “black water” stream and start learning about the rainforest. You are now in the Marañon River, where you will have the chance to see it’s amazing wildlife. You will return to the Aria mid-day for a delicious lunch and some leisure time. Around 4:00pm you will have a jungle walk and village visit – board the skiffs and disembark on the banks of the Amazon! Learn about medicinal plants and the precious ecosystem, as well as meet local villagers and learn about their traditional way of life. Return for a delicious meal on the Aria and an evening at your leisure, accompanied by the symphony of jungle sounds around you.

Day 9: Swim the World’s Largest Protected Wetland

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner

Accommodation: Aria Amazon, 01 Suite

Explore the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve

This morning you will start very early and have breakfast on board the skiffs, in order to see as much wildlife as possible in one of the earth’s greatest wilderness. Today you’re heading to the Amazonia community, where you will have another jungle walk, this time under the canopy of the Ceiba trees – the tallest trees in the Amazon! Learn about the production of palm oil and the protection of turtle eggs. You’ll return to the Aria for a cooking lesson resulting in a scrumptious lunch before heading back out to explore the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve and its abundant wildlife. In the rainy season (December to May) you will visit the area by skiff. Keep an eye out for monkeys, caimans, and freshwater dolphins on what is known as the Forest of Mirrors! Then it’s back to the Aria for another delicious dinner meal and evening at your leisure.

Day 10: Wildlife in Abundance

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner

Accommodation: Aria Amazon, 01 Suite

Witness Wildlife Breakfast Routines and the Amazon’s Best Fishing Hole

Early this morning, you will board your skiffs for a visit to the Marañon River and the “Casual” community. Here, you will enjoy an on-land hike, so make sure to keep your binoculars handy for sightings of tanagers, poisonous frogs, and trees and medicinal plants! You will enjoy lunch back at the Aria, and embark for an afternoon fishing adventure at the “Islands of the Iguanas”. This catch and-release hot spot is great for seeing not only the iguanas from which the islands receive their name, but also the famous Piranhas up close! Return to the Aria for dinner on-board, as well as an evening presentation of a summary of your wildlife sighting and a presentation of the staff on-board who have made your stay so utterly enjoyable. Fall asleep one last time under the Amazonian stars as the Aria pulls you back toward Iquitos.

Day 11: Bidding Goodbye to the Amazon and Peru

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Learn About Village Life and Fly Home

After breakfast, you will board your skiffs for a visit to the floating houses and shops on the Itaya River. You’ll have the opportunity to visit a traditional market and, if you’re feeling adventurous, try a local delicacy of chubby Amazonian caterpillars called “Suri.” After boarding the ship one last time, the Aria will continue sailing downstream toward Iquitos. Enjoy a final early lunch onboard before you disembark and bid the river goodbye as you travel back to Iquitos, where you’ll be invited to visit the city’s Manatee Rescue Center. At the appropriate time, we’ll be there to help you board your flight to Lima and when you touch down in the Lima airport, we’ll be there to provide assistance to check you in for your international flight home. Enjoy a leisurely dinner at the Costa Del Sol hotel as you wait for your flight. Thank you for traveling with Kuoda Travel, and buen viaje!

We just got back from a 28 day vacation in Peru and it was perfect thanks to Kuoda and Thomas Adams, my trip coordinator. Thomas and I spent 4 months honing down the perfect itinerary and then he and his company made it happen. We hiked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, toured Lake Titicaca, rode the Andean Explorer, white water rafted, cruised the Amazon and all the details were in order. All the guides were wonderful and very knowledgeable. The drivers were punctual and skilled. These guys specialize in planning a unique experience just for you and they do it well!!! Nothing but praise and kudos!! By the way, Peru is an awesome place to visit!!!
