Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Tokyo, Japan. Welcome to Tokyo! Your hotel room is available for mid-afternoon check-in.

Day 2

Tokyo. Today, hop on Tokyo’s subway system for a PRIVATE GUIDED SIGHTSEEING TOUR of the city. Start at MEIJI SHRINE, a magnificent 20th-century Shinto monument set in a man-made forest. Next, stop at the SAMURAI MUSEUM to learn about their history and see authentic period-specific swords, armor, and helmets (kabuto). You will even have the chance to have your picture taken wearing a helmet and armor! Lastly, visit bustling NAKAMISE SHOPPING ARCADE and ASAKUSA KANNON TEMPLE, the oldest of their kind in Tokyo. The remainder of the day is at your leisure for independent activities. (B,L)

Day 3

Tokyo. Today, enjoy a full day at your leisure for independent exploration. Your Local Host will have suggestions. (B)

Day 4

Tokyo–Seoul, South Korea. Today, fly to Seoul, South Korea’s capital city. (B)

Day 5

Seoul. Your PRIVATE GUIDED SIGHTSEEING starts at GYEONGBOKGUNG PALACE, built in 1395 during the Joseon Dynasty that ruled the country for five centuries. Gyeongbokgung was the primary residence of the royal family and considered the most magnificent of the “Five Grand Palaces” built in Seoul. The palace complex was razed by the Japanese invasion of 1592. It sat abandoned for nearly 300 years until the mid-19th century when the complex was rebuilt and expanded with some 500 buildings. You will also stop at the NATIONAL FOLK MUSEUM to learn more about Korean culture. Before leaving the complex, watch a re-enactment of the Changing of the Guard Ceremony, and discover how the royal guards of the Joseon Dynasty were in charge of protecting the gates of the capital city and the royal palace. Next, take a WALKING TOUR through BUKCHON HANOK VILLAGE. Here, you can see hundreds of hanoks (traditional Korean houses) dating back to the Joseon Dynasty. Walk along the quiet alleys lined with restaurants and tea houses. Travel to nearby Insadong for lunch in a local restaurant featuring Korean cuisine. A highlight is bibimbap, a signature dish of warm rice topped with sautéed vegetables, sliced meat, chili paste, and a fried egg. Afterward, stroll along Insadong Street, a center for traditional arts and crafts. The remainder of the afternoon is at your leisure. (B,L)

Day 6

Seoul. Enjoy a full day at your leisure to explore this exciting city. (B)

Day 7

Seoul–Beijing, China. Today, fly to Beijing. (B).

Day 8

Beijing. This morning, enjoy a PRIVATE GUIDED EXCURSION to the GREAT WALL OF CHINA, which once stretched 4,000 miles across China’s barren northern terrain from the Bohai Sea to the Gobi Desert. Walk along the wall and take in the stunning views of this mammoth fortress and the surrounding scenery. Return to Beijing for an afternoon at leisure. (B,L)

Day 9

Beijing. Begin your PRIVATE GUIDED SIGHTSEEING at TIAN’ANMEN SQUARE, the largest public square in the world. Next, stop at the FORBIDDEN CITY, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world’s largest palace complex. Once the home of China’s great emperors, today it showcases ancient Chinese architecture, landscaped gardens, and displays of rare art and artifacts. The afternoon is at your leisure. (B)

Day 10

Beijing. Your vacation ends with breakfast this morning. (B)

Hands down this was the smoothest any vacation, local or abroad, has gone for me. Monograms did not miss a thing, from the nice hotels to the friendly local hosts. We would have missed so much had we booked a trip by ourselves. The local guides were also top notch, with a clear high reputation among their colleagues and in the city with which they live. With that, we felt like royalty with drivers picking us up in a Mercedes each time. The whole trip was professional, information and enjoyable. Monograms has my business moving forward.

We had a great time all around--it was excellent to have all of the arrangement made ahead of time and take some of the hassles out of travel.
We got a great deal--that was in part driven by super low air fare--which included a long layover--long enough to be a pain and screw up the first day, short enough that we couldn't go to town (Dublin) and make the best of it. Of course we could have paid more and gotten a direct flight but part of the appeal of the offer was the amazingly low cost. Hindsight, we'd have done the deal and paid the extra$.

We are very well traveled and have taken many group and private tours so can speak with confidence when we express our sincere satisfaction with our Monograms tour. The guides/drivers/accommodations were gracious, professional, knowledgeable and informative. Everything went very smoothly and our experience was wonderful. Highly recommend the Miramar Windsor Hotel in Rio, Belmond Cataratas in Iguassu and Hangaroa Eco Lodge in Easter Island-they were outstanding and restaurant food was excellent.
