  • Ride a catamaran, a tram, and bush planes through pristine wilderness

Short Description

Southeast Alaska presents one of the most exciting nature and wildlife viewing opportunities in the world. Two of its largest protected habitats are Glacier Bay National Park, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and famous for marine wildlife and its stunning tidewater glaciers; and the Tongass National Forest, home to the largest population of bears in Southeast and the largest forest in the entire United States at 17 million acres! And while these places sound impressive (and they really are), it takes being there to understand the colossal proportions of the landscape. We have been pioneering adventure travel in “Southeast” since 1972, and our high ethics have set the standard for other companies

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Juneau

Meals: Dinner

Accommodation: Goldbelt Hotel

Arrive in Juneau, Alaska's state capital, and enjoy the city's frontier spirit and small-town charm. Explore Juneau's historic streets and sights on your own before a pre-trip meeting with your guide, and a welcome dinner this evening.

Day 2: Juneau – Tongass National Forest – Glacier Bay

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Gustavus Inn

Juneau boasts one of the most extensive network of hiking trails in all of Alaska.  Today we hike the trails of our country's largest national forest, the Tongass.  We will experience the power and the beauty of the northwest temperate rain forest.  After a day of exploring the Tongass, we will transfer on small charter planes to the bush town of Gustavus, Alaska.

Day 3: Glacier Bay

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Gustavus Inn

After an early breakfast, we board a high-speed catamaran boat with a park ranger, who will educate us about the geological wonders of the area. This all-day tour takes us to the farthest reaches of this spectacular park making stops for wildlife viewing along the way. Lunch is served aboard the catamaran. We’ll return to our lodge for another relaxing evening and a great dinner.

Day 4: Point Adolphus

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Stickine Inn

Today, we'll go to see the humpback whales at Point Adolphus by boat. Point Adolphus is the best place in all the North Pacific to have a chance to observe the endangered humpback whale. Every summer these giant creatures swim from Hawaii all the way across the ocean to feed on the rich marine resouces at this specific spot.  The protected north shore of Chichagof Island is a pardise for marine mammals and bald eagles.  Special conditions in the ocean currents make this one of Alaska's hottest wildlife zones.  Traveling by boat this day gives us the flexibilty to find where the wildlife is congregating and to observe them from the deck of a vessel.

Day 5: Wrangell

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Stickine Inn

Aside from the rich Native American heritage, Wrangell is also close to Anan Bear Observatory. This is the primary reason we visit  this out-of-the-way small Alaskan town. Anan Bear Observatory is one of the best places anywhere to watch bears. A very large run of Humback salmon draws bears from many miles away to feed at this spot.  It is very unusual to take in both Brown Bears (a.k.a. Grizzlies) and Black Bears in the same sweep of the eye.  This is one of a few place this is possible.

Day 6: Alpine in the Tongass National Forest

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Goldbelt Hotel

Fly to Juneau and hike into the alpine meadows above tree line. Life Zones are compressed in Alaska.  There are no more trees above 2500'.  From the charming downtown Juneau we hop aboard a tram that is operated by a Native American corporation and ride into the mountains.  We start our walk at the border of the trees and the alpine and soon we are in fields of wildflowers, above the fjords, and close to the tops of the mountains.  You may even get to play in some snow.   Aside from being the best place to look for different species of wildflowers this habitat is also home to many bird species and the elusive Hoary Marmot.  Tonight we enjoy a farewell dinner and spend one last night in Alaska's Capital city.

Day 7: Depart from Juneau

Meals: Breakfast

Today you are free to depart from Juneau at any time.

We had such a wonderful experience with MT SOBEK! We have dietary restrictions and they were so accommodating, could not have asked for more! The food was plenty and organic, the guides, Manolo and Whilder are so attentive and caring! They really care about each persons experience. We arrived prior to the start of our trip and I got a bacterial infection along with a parasite and the guides knew exactly what I needed and made every effort to get me as healthy as possible as quickly as possible!! We missed the first two pre-hikes but hiked the rest with full pack and smiles! Honestly, these two guides brought together 12 strangers into a tight family who are planning another trip together next year,! we just finished Machu Picchu and are wanting another MT SOBEK adventure!!

My daughter and I recently took a trip to summit Kilimanjaro followed by a 4-day safari game drive on the Serengeti. We both agree it was one of the most amazing experiences of our lives and we owe most of that to MTS. They handled the details of the trip flawlessly, making all the logistics very seamless and easy. The staff and guides were all amazing - friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, and clearly motivated to make our experience successful and fun. The food by far exceeded expectation in quality and quantity, as did the camp accommodations. All in all, I would not hesitate to travel with them again and I would gladly recommend them to any friends and family interested in taking an adventure trip.

My trip with MTS was absolutely fabulous and I highly recommend this company!! I booked a trip to Tanzania as a last hurrah before getting pregnant and it was totally the trip of a lifetime I was hoping for. We spent a few days on safari in the Taragire, a few days in the Serengeti, and then headed off to Zanzibar for a few days of relaxing beach time - the perfect mix of activity and rest. The sights and accommodations were unbelievable and I honestly felt like royalty the whole time! Each time we arrived a new lodge/ “camp” (more like “glamping”) the staff came out to meet us with hot towels and beverages, sometimes even singing a welcome song. In talking to other guests it became clear that our itinerary included only the top lodges, with the friendliest staff, nicest lodging, best food, and most secluded locations. One day we awoke to find a lion paw print literally six inches from our tent, and another night we were woken up by the sounds of a pack of hyena taking down an injured water buffalo that had been hanging around camp. The guides were all super knowledgeable and fun, not to mention skilled at finding all the wildlife we were interested in. There was one day that our guide spotted a cheetah from literally miles away. He tried to point it out to us, but I couldn’t make it out through the binoculars and totally thought he was full of it. Then we started driving in that direction, and lo and behold, 15 minutes later there we were, right next a gorgeous cheetah (see my picture on the wall).

My daughter and I recently took a trip through MTS to summit Kilimanjaro followed by a four-day safari. In short, we agree it was probably the most amazing trip we've ever taken. MTS as a coordination group truly dialed this to 11. All the logistical details of pickups, drop-offs, and other details were nailed. The entire trip was seamless. The guides we had were fantastic and the staff was top-notch - friendly, informative, and really took a keen interest and mission in making our trip successful and fun. The food was great and the accommodation far surpassed our expectations. In short, we couldn't recommend working with them on your next adventure trip more highly.

With teenage children, we wanted to do something that would satisfy all of us. There was enough fun activities to keep us active and enough down time for us to relax. We were pushed outside our comfort zone, but the outstanding staff was there to encourage us and cheer us on.

Pura Vida in Costa Rica is a vacation is for those who like the water—we were white water rafting, kayaking, rappelling down a waterfall, and even soaking in hot springs. Great food and lodging, interesting birds and animals to see, and excellent guides made this our best adventure vacation yet.
