Short Description

A 5-day holiday to a scenic and culturally rich region of central Sweden to track Wolves and other mammals through snow-cloaked taiga forests, from the comfort of one of the region's most acclaimed hotels.

On this holiday we’ll be based in the heart of the Scandinavian Wolf population, close to the stunning Lake Siljan in an area known as the ‘heart of Sweden’. This is a region of lakes and snow-covered hills and forests, where folklore and old traditions remain in tact. At this time of year, we – and the Wolves – will have the place very much to ourselves. A star of the trip will be our guide, Anders Stahl, a renowned wolf-tracker, conservationist and artist. Using snow-shoes or cross-country skis, we’ll head out, under Anders’ expert tutelage, into Wolf pack territories learning how to interpret the tracks and signs we find of Wolf and other forest birds and mammals.

Groups are between 25-60 people, typically ~30-40. Usually there will be many opportunities to split off and enjoy meals and excursions in smaller groups. This is the most economical way to travel, saving up to 40% versus booking the same itinerary yourself.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Tällberg, Dalarna
We depart from London Heathrow on the British Airways early morning flight to Stockholm. Arriving at Stockholm airport, we then take the train to Tällberg village, where we’ll be met by our English- speaking Swedish tour leader and Wolf expert, Anders Ståhl.

It is just a short distance to our comfortable hotel, the Green Hotel in Tällberg, and after checking into our rooms we will meet with Anders for a comprehensive briefing on what is to come over the next few days. After a 3-course dinner in the hotel’s charming restaurant, there may be some free time for those that wish to take a night time stroll through the beautiful village of Tällberg before we adjourn to prepare our winter clothing for tomorrow’s programme.

Day 2 : Tällberg, Dalarna
Today, after breakfast, we will wrap up in our warm clothing and windproof equipment and head out into the snow-covered taiga forests that clothe the hills around Lake Siljan in Dalarna. Using the forest tracks, we will drive into the heart of the hilly taiga forest, using our vehicle as a base from which to explore this wilderness on foot, snow shoes and skis, possibly in deep snow at times. Under Anders’ guidance, we will begin our introduction to tracking Wolves in this area, and learning about the Wolf packs of the region, hopefully picking up our first signs of them. Snow shoes will be essential to enable us to move more easily through the snow, and learning to move silently through this snow-laden terrain is an essential part of the tracking experience. There will also be time for birdwatching, and we’ll Crested Tit, by Ander Stahl particularly be on the look-out for Hazelhen, Capercaillie, Black Grouse and Siberian Jay... plus a wide range of woodpeckers that includes Three-toed, Black, Grey-headed, Lesser Spotted and Green Woodpecker. Listening carefully, we will pick up Crested and Coal Tits, Bullfinches and Crossbills. The hardy little Dipper may be seen actively searching for food in the ice-cold streams, while overhead we’ll look out for Golden Eagle, Sparrowhawk and Goshawk. On cold, clear days, the air is dry and icy and the light simply stunning as it illuminates the magnificent wilderness scenery of Dalarna, and the pretty, bright, red-painted wooden farmhouses and villages around the lakes.

After a cold and energetic day in the field, the warmth and comfort of the Green Hotel is always most welcome on our return, not to mention a delicious 3-course dinner! But afterwards, if you should still have the energy, Anders will be keen for you to return to the forest at night-time – to experience a stillness and a night sky (if the weather is clear) that we rarely encounter in the UK. In these still, snow-laden forests we’ll also listen for owls – amongst them Great Grey, Ural, Tengmalm’s, Pygmy and Tawny Owl – and perhaps even hear a pack of howling Wolves!

Day 3 : Tällberg, Dalarna
This morning we will rise early once again, enjoying a hearty, re-vitalising breakfast before the sky becomes fully light, setting off soon afterwards for a full day of wildlife tracking. We will take lunchpacks from the hotel so that we may make best use of limited daylight during these short Nordic winter days. Today we hope to offer you a unique experience as we aim to snowshoe in the tracks of wild Wolves! The area around Lake Siljan contains the highest density of Wolves in Scandinavia and we have a number of Wolf territories to choose from. During the day we also hope to find the tracks of other carnivores such as European Lynx, Red Fox, Pine Marten, Otter and maybe even the rare Wolverine. There are also some bird feeders to visit the forest, which regularly offer good sightings and excellent photographic opportunities.
Once again, the warmth, comfort and cuisine of the Green Hotel will be welcome and well-earned this evening. After dinner, if the weather is clear and calm, we may opt to return into the forest to listen again for Wolves and owls.

Day 4 : Tällberg, Dalarna
After breakfast we will wrap up warm again as we venture out for another morning’s wildlife tracking and birdwatching in the forests and hills of Dalarna. Then, later in the morning, and if we have enjoyed our fill of animal tracking, we will spend the rest of the day sampling some traditional Swedish winter activities!

We will make our way to a suitable lake to try a spot of ice fishing, and for those who wish, skiing on the ice on old-fashioned all-terrain skis... perhaps not as easy as it looks! Anders, meanwhile, will set up our campfire and prepare for a good old Swedish ’grilla korv’, or field barbecue, on which we will grill our own locally produced Swedish sausages. Anders will also make sure you are well versed in basic Nordic winter survival techniques, such as how to start a fire and what you can find to eat and drink!

Our new found survival techniques aside, at the end of another full day outdoors, we will all appreciate returning to our lovely warm hotel and another hearty meal! During our return journey there may also be a chance to visit Anders’ art studio, and enjoy the results of the inspiration he takes from the snowy landscapes and surrounding wildlife!

Back at the Green Hotel, we will enjoy a relaxing evening and our final dinner together.

Day 5 : Tällberg, Dalarna; Fly London
We will enjoy a relaxing last breakfast at the Green Hotel before heading to Tällberg railway station in mid-morning in order to catch the train back to Stockholm. Our British Airways’ afternoon/evening flight from Stockholm is scheduled to arrive at London Heathrow at 2035 hours.
