Itinerary

Day 1: Depart USA

Depart USA and cross the international dateline.

Day 2: Arrive Shanghai

Arrive in Shanghai, where you will be met by our representative and transferred to your Deluxe accommodations.

Day 3: Shanghai 

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

At the Shanghai museum, you'll have the opportunity to discover some of China's priceless pieces of ancient art consisting of bronze, ceramic, jade and calligraphy. On the way back, visit 50 Moganshan Road, or “M50,” a district of contemporary art with open-to-public workshops, galleries, and sidewalks full of statues and tasteful graffiti paintings; followed by a visit to Shanghai's old town, Yu Garden and the city's colonial European past at the Bund. Your tour will end at Xintiandi, “The French Concession,” where you may wish to enjoy dinner and return to your hotel by taxi on your own. 

Day 4: Shanghai / Yangtze Cruise

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

This morning is at your leisure. At noon, board your Victoria Cruises ship for an unforgettable cruise along the Yangtze River.

Day 5: Yangtze Cruise: Nanjing Excursion

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Visit Nanjing, where you will tour Dr. Sun Yat-Sen's Mausoleum and, if time permits, a Qing Dynasty-style bazaar surrounding a Confucian Temple.

Day 6: Yangtze Cruise: Jiuhuashan Excursion  

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

A full day excursion to Jiuhuashan, or “Mountain of the Nine Lotuses,” one of the four sacred mountains in Chinese Buddhism. The one-hundred square kilometer area is known for its quiet beauty, which includes ridges and peaks, winding paths, waterfalls, streams and ancient temples. (Huangshan, or “Yellow Mountain,” may be substituted, if weather or road conditions do not permit a visit to Jiuhuashan.)

Day 7: Yangtze Cruise: Wuhan Excursion

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

An evening excursion to Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province. Visit the Hubei Provincial Museum. (Depending on arrival time, an alternate excursion may be substituted to the Jiang Han Pedestrian Street, which contains hundreds of establishments including food shops, retail stores and theaters.)

Day 8: Yangtze Cruise: Upstream Sailing

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Continue sailing on the Yangtze River. You may wish to enjoy some of our onboard facilities including the gym, spa and beauty salon.

Day 9: Yangtze Cruise: Yichang / Xiling Gorge / Three Gorges Dam / Ship Locks

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

This morning, sail through Gezhou Dam near Yichang. In the afternoon, visit the Three Gorges Dam, the largest in the world. Sail through Xiling Gorge, the longest (41 miles) and deepest of the Three Gorges. Later today, enter the Three Gorges Dam ship locks.

Day 10: Yangtze Cruise: Wu Gorge / Qutang Gorge / Shennong Stream “Small Gorges”

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Visit Wu Gorge known for its quiet beauty, forest-covered mountains and cliffs. Board a riverboat through the Small Gorges along Shennong Stream with its swift-running water, unusual rock formations, hanging coffins of the Bo people, monkeys, some 124 species of birds and protected wildlife. Alternatively, your excursion may be on Goddess Stream with its scenic, narrow gorges. Then, sail through Qutang Gorge, the shortest and most dramatic of the gorges.

Day 11: Yangtze Cruise: Fengdu

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Board your Victoria Cruises ship for an unforgettable cruise along the Yangtze River. Disembark in Fengdu for a visit to the new resettlement town on the Yangtze's south bank, or to the Ghost City. Depending on river conditions (if a visit to Fengdu is not possible), an alternative shore excursion will be to Shibaozhai with its impressive wooden pagoda, appropriately named “The Pearl of the Yangtze.” Later, return to your ship and continue sailing downstream.

Day 12: Yangtze Cruise: Chongqing / Beijing

Meals: Breakfast

After breakfast, disembark in Chongqing and fly to the capital of China Beijing, a fascinating city rich in history and memorable UNESCO World Heritage sites.

This evening, perhaps, join an optional Beijing Duck dinner (at extra cost).

Day 13: Beijing 

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

This morning, see Tiananmen Square and the extravagant Ming-era Imperial Palace in the Forbidden City featuring the living quarters, museum and the jewelry sections. The entire complex covers 74 hectares (183 acres) and consists of over 8,000 rooms. The exhibition halls and vaults hold some one million treasures at one of the most important museums in all of China. Later, visit Summer Palace declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. You may enjoy a boat ride on the manmade Lake Kunming (weather permitting).

Day 14: Beijing 

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

Today, experience a highlight of your trip, as you visit the renowned Great Wall. On the way, if traffic allows, stop to photograph the iconic “Bird's Nest???—the Beijing National Stadium—host to many spectacular events of the 2008 Summer Olympics. Then, arrive at the amazing Great Wall and walk along its ramparts as emperors once did. After lunch, visit a jade factory, where you will learn about different types of jade and its properties. Jade is well known throughout China for its durability, musical qualities, its subtle, translucent colors, and its alleged protective powers. The remainder of the afternoon is at your leisure.

This evening, perhaps, join an optional performance of the Legend of Kung Fu (at extra cost).

Day 15: Depart Beijing

Meals: Breakfast

After breakfast, bid farewell to China, as you transfer to the airport for your flight home/onward.
