Overview

Highlights

  • The wildlife is remarkably abundant in this extreme environment. scan the seas for seals; look out for minke, humpback and orca whales; spot rare birds on the beagle channel; and witness gentoo, adelie and chinstrap penguins on daily boat trips
  • The spectacular terrain of antarctica is like nowhere else on earth. set foot on the unique plains, mountains and beaches of the white continent and watch icebergs calve into the sea
  • A polar plunge in antarctic waters is like nothing else. this is sure to be one of the most invigorating swims you will ever take
  • Additional optional excursions allow you to see this continent from many perspectives. explore by sea kayak, or take to the snow in snowshoes for an extended hike over the icy terrain (be sure to book early)

Short Description

Follow in the footsteps of the great explorers and experience the best of the Antarctic Peninsula, the northernmost region of the white continent. Throughout the course of ten memorable days, be graced by the presence of penguins, seals and whales as they accompany you on your journey along the Antarctic coastline. Landing on the continent is in itself a memorable highlight, and the excitement only escalates from there, as one of the world’s most pristine and exotic natural environments reveals itself in one enchanting icy scene after the next.

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Itinerary

Day 1 Ushuaia

This afternoon we will meet with your Chimu Adventures escort in a central location, before heading to the ship. We board our vessel in the world’s southernmost city, Ushuaia. After meeting our fellow passengers and finding our way around our new home we set sail through the famed beagle channel. Passing incredible scenery we glimpse our last sight of land as we head due south towards Antarctica.

Day 2 Drake Passage

We spend the day at sea, through the legendary waters of the Drake passage that is named after famous English seafarer, Sir Frances Drake. If conditions allow, enjoy the ample outer deck space to look for dolphins, whales and orcas as well as seabirds including the mighty Albatross following the ship. A comprehensive optional lecture program will also get under way, with some fascinating insights into Antarctic history, geology, biology and everything in between.

Day 3 Drake Passage

Today we continue crossing the Drake passage and hope to make landfall by early evening if conditions are favourable. The first sighting of land always brings great excitement on any expedition south.

Day 4-7 Antarctic Peninsula

For the next four days we explore the Antarctic Peninsula, which is famed for its majestic mountains, glaciers, calm waters and abundance of wildlife. Our lecture program continues during our voyage, and sightseeing during this period is at its most spectacular off the ship’s outer decks. We hope to visit an active research station during our time on the peninsula (subject to approval) as well as explore well known sites such as the Lemaire Channel, Deception Island, Paradise bay and Neko Harbour. While on the peninsula we have our famous Antarctica quiz as well as a host of interesting night time activities.

Day 8 Drake Passage

Leaving Antarctica behind we sail north to our home port of Ushuaia. We have time to reflect on our amazing journey and hear more wonderful talks on Antarctica.

Day 9 Drake Passage

By the evening we hope to be back in the tranquil surrounds of the Beagle, ensuring a restful nights sleep. Our last meal together is often a highlight, so live it up and enjoy as you celebrate the trip with fellow travellers.

Day 10 Ushuaia

After breakfast we disembark the ship. We wave goodbye to our new friends and continue on our journey or home. Transfer to the airport is included.

We arrived home last week following an 11 day tour with Peregrine Plus, Lima, The Sacred Valley and Lake Titikaka. It was amazing beyond all our expectations. Our private guide was a Peruvian local, English speaking, he was excellent great local knowledge and organised everything like clockwork. Our accommodation was brilliant we were treated like royalty, check out Hotel B in Lima, Sol Luna Urubamba and Hotel Belmond Monasterio in Cusco. Would highly recommend this tour and look forward to another experience with Peregrine in the future.

My first ever trip in smaller numbers - loved it, yes, loved it so much as we could do things that larger groups can not do. Ecuador, Peru including the Amazon region, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Brazil were awash with fantastic experiences with the stunning and majestic sights, the people and their culture, the food, animal and bird life and of course, what I accomplished by surprising myself at the Incan ruins. Our guides, Alejandro in Ecuador, Sally in Peru and Sabina in Chile, Argentina and Brazil were just the best Ambassadors for Peregrine as they showed such passion for their country and genuine care for each of our small number to return home with amazing memories to abide in our hearts forever. Muchas Gracias to each of you as you have touched my life with a very special imprint. I highly recommend this full trip for the entire 6 weeks just in case you have not noticed.

This trip was fabulous and it was made even better with the knowledge and expertise of our Spanish-speaking guide, Jorge Riofru. Jorge smoothed over all our difficulties and showed us the real Peru that is his homeland. He was able to ensure that my coeliac diet was catered for even when we were trekking to Machu Picchu! this trip was enhanced by the deep knowledge and love that Jorge has for his country. this has been one of the best trips ever.
