Short Description

Immerse yourself in the spirit of 1920s exploration on this seven-day River Nile journey. Egypt has long fascinated the worldly traveller, and if there were a golden age of travel, it could be traced to the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922, and further still to the publication of the first Egypt guidebook in 1835. Step back to those times and stay in a plush riverside winter retreat of the Egyptian royal family, enjoy full-board hospitality sailing the Nile on an elegant dahabiya (the Nile houseboat of yore), visit colourful Nubian villages still alive with ancient cultures, and explore must-see ancient sites such as the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Karnak. Retracing the footsteps of the great explorers, this limited edition Upper Egypt adventure shines a light on Nile life like no other.

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Itinerary

Day 1 Luxor

Welcome to Egypt. Arrive at Luxor International Airport and transfer to your hotel. This is simply an arrival day, so you may arrive at any time (note that hotel rooms are generally only available from after midday). An important welcome meeting will be held at 6 pm. Other than that, the day is yours to spend as you please. Perhaps visit Ancient Thebes, the nearby Luxor Museum or the Luxor Temple, all of which are within walking distance. Your accommodation tonight is the superb Sofitel Old Winter Palace Hotel. Built in 1886, it is located on the Nile Corniche, directly across from the river.

Day 2 Luxor

Rise early and head into the Valley of the Kings. Buried under the arid hills here are more than 60 tombs of pharaohs, many richly decorated with reliefs and paintings. Explore this sprawling and spectacular place where discoveries are still being made. Tutankhamun's final resting place is also found here. After a visit to the three royal tombs and the tomb of Tutankhamen, continue to the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, which is set in a spectacular natural amphitheater. See also the Colossi of Memnon – giant statues once part of an impressive colonnade. In the afternoon, visit Karnak, one of the world's most celebrated temple complexes; built over a period of some 200 years, it has elements dating back to 2055 BC. Your guided tour of the temple reveals its finest sections. In the evening, dine in one of the many restaurants of the Old Winter Palace, relax in the beautiful hotel gardens, or perhaps go for a stroll along the Corniche.

Day 3 Nile River Sailing

In the morning, travel by road to Esna (approximately 50 km) and board your dahabiya sailing boat. These colonial-style, two-mast vessels are just 40 metres long and beautifully appointed. Take some time to unpack in your cabin before a visit to Esna temple and a short walk through the local markets. Set sail to El Kab, the ancient town of Nekheb, and explore the remains of its temples and tombs. Back on board, sail to your mooring place for the evening. Enjoy a dinner on the boat and watch the sunset from the tranquil banks of the Nile.

Day 4 Nile River Sailing

Sit down to a leisurely breakfast on deck, watching life on the Nile unfold as you sail for Edfu. Make a visit to the temple of Horus, the best-preserved of all the great temples of Egypt. Re-boarding the dahabiya, continue your exploration of the river Nile. If the wind is forgiving, there will be a stop at some of the small villages to explore and meet the local Nubian people before mooring for the evening on a small island. Dinner is once again served on board.

Day 5 Nile River Sailing

Sail to Gebel el Silsila, a vast necropolis dating back some 3500 years. Explore the fascinating ancient sandstone quarries and rock-cut chapels of Horemheb, Seti I, Ramesses II and Merenptah. Continuing upriver, the dahabiya moves toward the temple at Kom Ombo. Referred to as the double temple, this unique structure is in fact dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile god, and Horus, the falcon-headed god. The layout combines two temples in one, each side with its own gateways and chapels. Tonight is spent on the island of Maniha.

Day 6 Nile River Sailing

Sail to Daraw, which was once the last stop on the famous 40-day desert road between Sudan and Egypt. Explore the Souq al-gimaal (camel market) and take a walk through the village. Then, back on board, continue to the to Nubian village of El Koubania, near Aswan. Settle in for a final night on the dahabiya, celebrating with a farewell dinner on deck.

Day 7 Aswan

Bid farewell to your fellow travellers as the journey comes to an end. Disembark the dahabiya in Aswan after breakfast. Your tour leader and crew are able to arrange any onward transfers or Aswan excursions.

We arrived home last week following an 11 day tour with Peregrine Plus, Lima, The Sacred Valley and Lake Titikaka. It was amazing beyond all our expectations. Our private guide was a Peruvian local, English speaking, he was excellent great local knowledge and organised everything like clockwork. Our accommodation was brilliant we were treated like royalty, check out Hotel B in Lima, Sol Luna Urubamba and Hotel Belmond Monasterio in Cusco. Would highly recommend this tour and look forward to another experience with Peregrine in the future.

My first ever trip in smaller numbers - loved it, yes, loved it so much as we could do things that larger groups can not do. Ecuador, Peru including the Amazon region, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Brazil were awash with fantastic experiences with the stunning and majestic sights, the people and their culture, the food, animal and bird life and of course, what I accomplished by surprising myself at the Incan ruins. Our guides, Alejandro in Ecuador, Sally in Peru and Sabina in Chile, Argentina and Brazil were just the best Ambassadors for Peregrine as they showed such passion for their country and genuine care for each of our small number to return home with amazing memories to abide in our hearts forever. Muchas Gracias to each of you as you have touched my life with a very special imprint. I highly recommend this full trip for the entire 6 weeks just in case you have not noticed.

This trip was fabulous and it was made even better with the knowledge and expertise of our Spanish-speaking guide, Jorge Riofru. Jorge smoothed over all our difficulties and showed us the real Peru that is his homeland. He was able to ensure that my coeliac diet was catered for even when we were trekking to Machu Picchu! this trip was enhanced by the deep knowledge and love that Jorge has for his country. this has been one of the best trips ever.
