Itinerary

Day 1: Air flight from Copenhagen (Denmark) to Kangerlussuaq (Greenland); embarkation.
We arrive at the starting point of our expedition, the town of Kangerlussuaq, from Copenhagen. Kangerlussuaq is more or less only the airport. Though the Greenland ice cap “knocking at the door” of the town and colourful houses make it a special place. After a sight-seeing tour and lunch, we embark the Sea Spirit and sail out of the picturesque fjord.

Please note: a flight from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq (departure 9:00, arrival 9:50), sight-seeing tour and lunch are not included. See details in a list of NOT INCLUDED services.

Day 2-7: West Greenland and Disko Bay.
Whales, nature, and cultural exploration await you in this iceberg paradise for the next six days.

At Evighedsfjorden, that means Fjord of Eternity, we go for hiking among the majestic mountain peaks to enjoy an incredible 360-degree panorama of the land and the surrounding fjords.

Sisimiut is the second largest settlement in Greenland looking very modern but at the same time very traditional. It is located 40 km north of the Arctic Circle and it is the southernmost settlement where there exists enough snow for dog sledding in winter and spring. You will find more dog sleds than humans in the town. The locals are very hospitable and colorful houses look friendly too.

With around 3.100 inhabitants is Aasiaat (which means translated „spider“) the 5th biggest community in Greenland. Founded in 1759 by Niels Egede, the town always had a strong connection with the whales: while they were the reason why whalers were attracted in the early days, today it is a good spot to watch those great animals.

The main meeting area in Itilleq is the centrally located soccer pitch! The local shop is next to it, the school only a few steps away. Itilleq is one of the few places with two churches - for 130 inhabitants more than plenty! One of the churches was actually moved here from Thule in the far north in the 1960s - and the original church from 1933 is used in our days as the library.

Ilulissat means icebergs. Watch the marvelous gallery of icy sculptures up to 100 metres in height. Hear the inimitable symphony of the icebergs’ cracking and rumbling. Smell their sweet scent. Though Ilulissat is much more than just icebergs. For nature lovers hiking in the surrounding hills reveal awesome views. Humpback whales are abundant in the nearby fjords. The local Inuit Art Museum contains a large collection of paintings by Greenland's probably best-known painter, Emanuel A. Petersen. Over 100 paintings by Greenlandic, Faroese and Danish artists are exhibited here.

Embrace yourself for strong emotions as we approach the beautiful Eqip Sermia Glacier. We plan to hike at Eqip Sermia area to watch huge pieces of ice breaking off. The sounds are enormous and the sight of the icebergs, crashing into the water, is breathtaking.

We will explore the picturesque Uummannaq Fjord and stop over at the same-name town. Uummannaq is translated as heart-like after the 1175 meter heart-shaped mountain that lies behind the town. According to the myth when someone visits Uummannaq a piece of his heart remains on the island forever, stirring the memories of visiting this enchanting place for life. Watch the locals’ everyday life as women sell handmade goods down at the harbor while behind them, men come and go on fishing boats heavy with the day’s catch on board.

Icebergs in Disko Bay come from the world’s fastest glacier Jakobshavn Glacier known also as Sermeq Kujalleq. It advances 40 meters daily and creates 46 cubic kilometers of icebergs annually. We have good chances to spot bowhead whales; in spring, these animals are still in Disko Bay before heading west.

At the volcanic Disko Island, we will see hot springs and columnar basalt rocks that evidence a volcanic history. Learn about the special geology of the island. It looks that the Earth has cropped out here to the very core and we get access to the “winners” of the planet. We visit Qeqertarsuaq– the only settlement on the island – to explore the beautiful nature around the town and the colourful town itself.

Day 8: Disembarkation in Kangerlussuaq (Greenland); Air flight to Copenhagen (Denmark).

We really enjoyed our recent adventure with Poseidon Expeditions. The staff and crew of the Sea Spirit couldn't have been better and the accommodations were wonderful. Our cabin steward Mario deserves a special thank you, as do Ruell and the entire food staff - vegetarians eat well!

Everything was 5 stars! The ship, the crew, the food, our expedition leaders. We were sorry to see it end and say good-bye. Everything that could be done for our comfort, safety, and enjoyment was done. The experience was marvelous and every day brought wondrous things. I recommend Poseidon Expeditions and the M/V Sea Spirt with absolutely no reservations!

We took a trip to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica on the Sea Spirit and it exceeded expectations. Everything about the trip was excellent. The ship's accommodations were wonderful, the staff was fantastic and the food was very good. We were constantly impressed by all the details that were thought of. Every one of the guides was very knowledgeable and offered something different to the trip. The waters can be very rough and shore landings are never guaranteed, but the guides and crew made sure that we had every opportunity to go ashore. I have nothing but praise to give for this organization and I plan to travel with them again.

Flexiblilty made the trip fabulous. We saw everything we expected and more and the entire crew could NOT have been more accommodating. Weather and violent seas were never a problem. The Drake passage was like a summer sailboat outing on Lake Erie. No one believes me but the pictures dont lie.

Food was very very good, Zodiaks were safe and adventuresome, and the people (crew and passengers) were enjoyable to share an experience with. The size of the ship was perfect for a Polar Expedition.

We have traveled with Poseidon twice to the Antarctic region. Both trips could not have been any better. Our cabin on the ship was perfect. The ship's crew was extremely accommodating and flexible. The expedition crew was very knowledgeable and personal. In addition, the food on the ship couldn't have been any better.
If you decide to travel with Poseidon Expeditions it will be a decision that you will never regret.

The islands and fjords of the High Arctic closely guard some of the world’s most unique and magical sea kayaking opportunities. Experience calving glaciers in Svalbard, cathedral-like icebergs in Greenland, or labyrinthine expanses of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean, all from our sturdy and stealthy sea kayaks. Join us for an unscripted kayaking adventure as we explore rugged coastlines and remote waters that very few people have ever paddled.

Sea Kayak Club is typically offered on voyages that include High Arctic destinations such as Greenland, Svalbard (Spitsbergen), Franz Josef Land, or a combination of these thrilling places.

The Polar Regions are perhaps the most photogenic on earth, with countless beautiful scenes presenting themselves every day. Endless expanses of ice, beaches crowded with seals or penguins, sunsets over unbroken horizons, starlit skies, and even the majestic northern lights – they all present fantastic photographic opportunities – and in order to make sure that you come home with some spectacular images we offer you the chance to learn and practice your photography alongside an experienced professional.

Our expert Photographer will be on hand to answer your questions and give advice, both in the form of onboard lectures and workshops on shore. Explore the key elements of photography in a fun and relaxed setting, with plenty of opportunities for questions and feedback. Learn how to see a light in a new way and experiment with the techniques of composition and framing.
