Afternoon: We'll be met by a local expert who will share her deep knowledge of the historic Renaissance Vinoy Resort. On New Year's Eve 1925, Aymer Vinoy Laughner's dream of an incomparable luxury hotel was realized. We’ll walk through the public spaces of this magnificent hotel that was — and still is — one of the finest examples of Mediterranean Revival architecture in Florida. With glazed quarry tiles, frescoed ceilings, intricate ornamental plaster, and beautifully painted wood beams, it is a monument to grace and elegance. Next, we will walk or ride a few blocks to the St. Petersburg Museum of History, Pinellas County’s oldest museum, where we'll continue our introduction to the city with a lecture on the history of St. Petersburg. Afterword there will be time to explore the museum. which has been sharing stories of the Sunshine City for nearly a century, through its mission to collect, preserve, and communicate the history and heritage of Florida with emphasis on St. Petersburg and the Pinellas Peninsula. We’ll learn more about “America's Pastime” — baseball — with an exhibit featuring the world's largest collection of autographed baseballs. We’ll also see a flying replica of the Benoist Airboat that made the world's first regularly scheduled airline flight on January 1, 1914, right here in Tampa Bay. Other exhibits will highlight further significant aspects of our signature city's history. We'll then return to our hotel to get ready for the half-hour bus ride to St. Pete Beach to put our toes in the Gulf of Mexico before dinner

St. Petersburg's Murals, Salvador Dali Museum, at leisure
St. Petersburg, Florida B,L Hampton Inn & Suites St. Petersburg/Downtown
Activity note: Getting on/off a bus. Walking and standing at field trip sites; short walk in brick paved alley.

Breakfast: Hotel buffet.

Morning: We’ll board our bus and head to Florida Craft Art, a non-profit gallery of fine crafts created in Florida. A local expert will join us there and lead us as we encounter St. Petersburg's most beautiful and interesting murals. Artists are turning buildings into works of art, some by local artists who paint with the permission of building orders, and some as the result of an annual festival that brings famous muralists from around the world. We’ll learn how this ancient yet new art form has come to St. Pete. We’ll also have some time to explore the gallery independently.

Lunch: A short bus ride will take us to Tavern at Bayboro, a casual dining tradition on the campus of University of South Florida St. Petersburg, where we will have a plated meal featuring a signature favorite — a Florida grouper sandwich — with choice of fried, broiled, or blackened (other choices available for those who don't eat fish); lemonade and water included, other beverages available for purchase.

Afternoon: Next, we’ll ride a few blocks to the Salvador Dalí Museum for an expert-led field trip. There has been a Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg for 30 years. The spectacular new building protects the most comprehensive private collection of Dalí's work outside Europe. The entire range of his work is displayed, from early Impressionist paintings through transitional surrealist works, and into his classical period. This constantly growing and evolving artist worked in all media, leaving behind a wealth of oils, watercolors, drawings, graphics, sculptures, films, photographs, performance pieces, jewels, and objects of all descriptions. Rotating exhibits will round out our experience. We will be at leisure for the remainder of the afternoon. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions.

Afternoon: Boarding our bus, we’ll head to Sunken Gardens. In 1903, George Turner, Sr. began growing tropical plants in the rich fertile soil of an ancient lake bed. What began as a passion for gardening blossomed into a world famous botanical garden. From there, we'll ride the bus to Imagine Museum to view a stunning collection of studio art glass. An expert in the collection will enlighten us about the history of this beautiful art form.

Lunch: We'll have lunch at a local St. Petersburg Restaurant

Afternoon: We will complete our study of glass with a visit to the Chihuly Collection, a permanent collection of world-renowned Dale Chihuly's unusual artwork in a setting designed to his specifications. To end our day, we'll visit the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, which opened to the public in 1965. The Museum has an eclectic and well-represented collection of art from antiquity to the present. The building is an attraction itself, with its Palladian inspired portico and soaring lobby with a glass wall opening on views of Tampa Bay. I liked everything about my RS tour of the Oregon Coast - the amazing places we saw; our well-informed and caring tour director Kathleen Fitzgerald; the capable and quietly efficient bus driver Tim; the vastly knowledgeable Earth Science specialist John Ford; the excellent local guides Audrey and Mike; the variety of group meals and eating locations; the convenient accommodations; and the wonderful tour co-participants. Also, before the tour, helpful Road Scholar staff and volunteers checked on all my health and nutrition needs. In all - an exquisite experience, which made me rush and book another Road Scholar tour for September. :-) Georgiana

Its not a trip, its a stop on your life's adventure and learning. My trip to the gardens of England and the Chelsea flower show with Jenny Smale as our tour guide and Kevin Tooher as our botanical guide was beyond my expectations for a tour of the gardens of England. We stayed in top hotels, rode in a comfortable bus, ate great meals and visited private sites that would have been impossible except for their assistance. Our group bonded and will continue to stay in touch.
I took hundreds of photos and packaged them into a Powerpoint presentation that I gave to my local garden club. Hope to encourage others to try this tour.
Can't wait for my next Road Scholar visit.
I am checking off my bucket list with the family that I never knew I had.

I have added another Road Scholar trip for 2019. I will be sharing 9 days with a fried in Churchill Ca while we travel on tundra buggies to see Polar Bears. I had been researching this trip for years and then looked over the Road Scholar description. Not only was it thousands cheaper, but also more side adventures and time watching bears than similar trips. I look forward to adding great photos to my review.

My recent trip to see Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone & the Grand Tetons was absolutely wonderful! The information, scenery, new friends, patience of the guide and bus driver could not have been better! I highly recommend any trip done by this company! We stayed in terrific hotels, had wonderful means and our bus was very comfortable. I felt that it was going to be quite good, but it was even better than I thought it would be! Tons of fun! I plan to go on many more trips with Road Scholar.

We went on a northern lights cruise along coast of Norway last fall - amazing! Just returned from a 40 passenger tour along inner passageways of Alaska - doubly amazing. Looking forward to going to either Galapagos or Ireland (to the 'thin' places) next year. Can't say enough about them! Excellent employees and services. Many on the trips have been 6 or more times through Road Scholar.
