Many people like to travel, but few can say they've seen the most elusive continent on Earth: Antarctica. On this wondrous 11-day journey to the end of the earth, you'll be able to claim just that.

With either the Ioffe or Vavilov serving as your vessel of discovery, you'll begin by sailing from the tip of South America down through the Drake Passage and onto the South Shetland Islands, stopping along the way at areas of interest.

Upon arrival at the icy Antarctic Peninsula, get ready to stand in awe of everything that you see. Giant glaciers serve as the white picket fence for a land that's as stunning as it is sprawling. Meanwhile, creatures of all kinds flourish and frolic in their natural habitat, from penguins to seals to soaring seabirds. Even multi-time visitors to the area such as our crew can't help but feel astonished each and every time they come.

The Family Magic Trip down the lower Salmon River in August was AMAZING! The guides were awesome! So knowledgeable, funny, and resourceful. The food was better than most restaurants and my kids loved it (as did I)! The River Jester (Lily) was such a sweet yet stern and fun lady that kept the kids entertained and they loved her. They setup camp for us each day at these amazing beaches! I have never been rafting, and they were there to make it seem easy and doable! I loved that they taught us about the local history and environments. A stop at Spalding was awesome start to the trip! I enjoyed the paddle boats, inflatable kayaks, and the oar boats. I even became part of the swim team but it was a good experience having the guides there to ensure our safety. I loved cliff jumping, the short hikes, swimming the rapids, and swimming in the river with the kids. The time with friends and family was great. It was so relaxing and good to meet so many different people I feel that I can call my friends now. Best part was sleeping under the stars with my family hearing the rushing river next to us. The guides made the trip so personal and they were caring! Thanks so much Mark, Max, Connie, Jonas, Curtis, Lily, and Bethany! Absolutely recommend going on a trip with ROW and I plan to with my children again, it was worth every penny! Thanks Jason for helping plan the trip for me!

ROW Adventures is a great way to get off the beaten path and experience our wonderful wilderness with a set of wonderful guides. I am not sure which was the best part of our 6 day trip on The River of No Return; the guides, the food, meeting new people, the river... But all seemed to fall into a wonderful rhythm that perfectly complimented each other. My family was very concerned that we even signed up for this type of vacation. It is one thing to go floating in the wild in your young, but quite different when you are many years down the road and suffer from chronic pain. For some reason, the cooler water if the river, time to give back to ur soul, the daily stops to visit the hot springs, the wonderful healthy great tasting food, and encouragement of our guides all seemed to bring back the youth of our younger days gone by. We smiled, giggled, shared great drink and laughed at the joke after joke. But most of all, it was the guides that made our trip as each day unfolded. Each guide brought back the youth of our soul through the morning stretches, the stories of past explorers, and the shared fishing tackle! Now my next wish is to embark on a new ROW adventure with my son so we can share a new chapter of complete happiness in our beautiful wilderness...Maybe Hells Canyon or their adventure that offers trail riding and fast river rafting! Either way, it is something for everyone no matter what your age!

Itinerary

Day: 1

Meals: Dinner

Accommodations: Akademik Sergey Vavilov

Below is a sample itinerary of the 11 day trip but we have trips ranging from 9 to 22 days - Please call for information.  Our dates and rates page reflects all departures.

Our journey commences this morning in the southern Chilean city of Punta Arenas. We meet at a central location before transferring to the airport for our scheduled flight to Stanley in the Falkland Islands. (This flight is included in the price of your voyage). After a short 90-minute journey we are met on arrival and transferred to the pier. Stanley is currently home to just over 2,000 residents and is reminiscent of a rural town in coastal Britain. It is charming with brightly colored houses, pretty flower-filled gardens, a quaint cathedral and several local pubs. The waterfront memorial, built to commemorate the lives of the servicemen lost during the Falklands War in the early 1980’s, is a sobering reminder of recent history. There is time to explore the town, before we make our way to the ship for embarkation. After settling in to our cabins and exploring the ship, we meet our expedition team and fellow passengers. Excitement is in the air as we enjoy a welcome cocktail, dinner and cast off, bound for Antarctica – and the adventure of a lifetime.

Day 2-3: Cruising the Drake Passage

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodations: Vavilov or Ioffe

By now we'll be making our way through the Drake Passage, an exhilarating journey on the open sea that's sure to leave you breathless. As we charter closer and closer to our peninsula prize, the excitement you'll be feeling will only intensify. Our expert guides on board will certainly be doing their best to inform and enthrall you on all things Antarctic before we arrive.

Once we cross the Antarctic Convergence, you'll know it won't be long now thanks to the distinct chill in the air. Towering icebergs and acrobatic whales will be the signposts marking our imminent arrival at the fabulously frigid Antarctica.

Day 4-8: Explore Antarctica

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodations: Vavilov or Ioffe

Welcome to the epic majesty of awesome Antarctica! We'll first explore our remarkable surroundings by Zodiac boat, dizzying ourselves with the undeniable beauty that is all around us. Neko Harbour, Wilhelmina Bay and Petermann Island are all potential stops on our fantastic float-bys.

Later, a visit to Half Moon Island is sure to be a highlight for any connoisseur of cuteness. It is here that breeding chinstrap penguins share the land with lounging fur seals and stunning blue-eyed shags. Also calling the area home are peaceful humpbacks and other majestic whales; keep an eye out for them as they catch their krill.

When we finally become official visitors of this colossal continent by setting foot on solid land, prepare to do a double and triple-take of the splendor that surrounds you. White as far as the eye can see and with icebergs that look like massive sculptures, Antarctica is truly a gem unlike any other.

Day 9-10: Cruising Back to Argentina

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodations: Vavilov or Ioffe

It's time to say farewell to Antarctica's gorgeous glory, but the trip back north will be nothing short of magical, too. As you relax and reflect on the incredible sights you've seen, you'll no doubt already be planning when you can come back.

As we make our way back through the Beagle Channel, you'll enjoy a final dinner with your shipmates, toasting to the conclusion of a superb adventure.

Day 11: Ushuaia Arrival

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodations: Vavilov or Ioffe

This morning we'll arrive back at the southernmost city of South America, Ushuaia. We'll wish our fellow adventurers well and all the best in future travels. You'll be transferred either to your hotel or the airport, depending on your final plans.

Ship Description

Akademic Vavilov

The Scandinavian-built Vavilov sails like a silent dream out on the water. Highly maneuverable yet remarkably stable, the Vavilov was built for both science and adventure. It can endure voyages of any arctic condition while maintaining a cruising speed of 14.5 knots.

The Vavilov and the Ioffe together are two of the most capable adventure vessels around.

From Peter Grubb - Founder of ROW Adventures

"The Vavilov and it's sister ship, the Ioffe, are 2 of the most advanced research vessels afloat. The Vavilov is impressive and neat as a pin,..which is refered to as 'Bristol Condition' in sailing terms. The ship is operated by one of the largest and oldest shipping companies. Our team has sailed on this ship many times and are always impressed with the service and the ship."

Akademic Ioffe

Primed for polar research, the Ioffe is an up-to-date, safe, spacious and all-around solid vessel. The common areas on board this boat are crafted with ultimate comfort in mind, whether you're attending an informative lecture or simply hanging out. With a fully stocked bar and variety of films available in the lounge, you can relax and unwind after a day of adventure just the way you want.

Other fabulous onboard facilities include an exercise room, ship store, massage parlor, sauna and pool. Then of course there's the great dining offered up in our superb dining room. An expert and professional staff member is always at the ready to tend to any need.

As it was originally crafted as a research vessel hailing from Finland, the Ioffe is a very graceful, peaceful and accommodating ship. You'll marvel at how quietly and smoothly she sails and appreciate the transformation she's undergone in order to shift her focus from science to adventure.

The last thing you'll want when you're trying to enjoy an Antarctic cruise is a rocky and noisy ship; such things are unheard of on the Ioffe thanks to her clever design. A ballast trimming system ensures that sea sickness is kept to a minimum, while noisy engines are situated far out of earshot.
