Cuba has been open to limited group travel for four years and is being opened to individual travel (still with restrictions) now. With thousands of Americans descending on our nearest island neighbor, Cuba has to increase its tourist infrastructure - and lose some of its charm.

Smithsonian Journeys is a great way to see Cuba before it changes. Yes, Smithsonian tours are more expensive than some other tour companies but the phrase, "you get what you pay for", certainly holds true. Everything about the tour was top notch - the American tour coordinator, the local Cuban guide, the itinerary - the best. And everything is included - everything - tipping, all activities, tours. Cuba is a fascinating destination and deserves a quality tour company.

Day 3: Motril, Spain, Granada

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Granada exemplifies the best of Moorish art, architecture, and culture. Tour the Alhambra, a striking 13th-century palace begun by the caliphs of the Nasrid dynasty and an architectural marvel of lacy arches, filigreed ceilings, slender columns, and romantic courtyards adorned with lovely fountains. Also stroll through the splendid Generalife Gardens, adjacent to the Alhambra, once the retreat of the caliphs.

Day 4: Alicante

A morning tour of the town includes the imposing Castillo de Santa Barbara and the Cathedral of San Nicolas. In the afternoon, drive to Elche (Elx), famed for its exotic palm forest, now a World Heritage site, followed by a visit to the Huerta del Cura garden.

Day 5: Valencia

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Explore Valencia's Old Town, visiting the 13th-century Cathedral, with paintings by Goya, and view the Generalitat Palace. Also visit La Lonja de la Seda, a masterpiece of late Gothic architecture. Built between 1482 and 1533, this group of buildings was originally used for trading in silk. The grandiose Sala de Contratacion, in particular, illustrates the power and wealth of a major Mediterranean mercantile city in the 15th and 16th centuries. In the afternoon visit the remarkable City of Arts and Sciences, a cultural complex designed by native architect Santiago Calatrava. Enjoy a musical performance at a historical venue.

Day 6: Alcudia, Majorca, Balearic Islands

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

In the morning visit the Yannik & Ben Jacober Foundation to view its outstanding painting and sculpture collection and explore its garden. Continue with a walking tour of Alcudia including St. Jaume's Church, St. Christ's Chapel, the town's most important houses (casals) and views of the city walls and gates. Enjoy a musical performance at a historical venue.

Day 7: Oristano, Sardinia, Italy, Tharros

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 8: Cagliari, Su Nuraxi, Nora or Cagliari

After lunch aboard, spend time at leisure to explore Cagliari on your own, or take an excursion to Nora, whose ancient remains date from the Carthaginian and Roman periods.

Day 9: Trapani, Sicily, Erice, Segesta

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Drive up winding roads to the medieval town of Erice. The town was known for its temple to the fertility goddess, Astarte. Look around the 12th-century Venus Castle and continue to Segesta for a visit to its magnificent Doric temple, built in 420 b.c. and among the best-preserved ancient Greek sites.

Day 10: Naples, Pompeii

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
