We decided to trust Story to deliver one of our bucket list trips. THEY DID NOT DISAPPOINT! The tour through Venice, Florence, Cortona, and Rome exceeded our expectations. Absolutely everything was FIRST CLASS. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. We gave it 5 stars only because there aren’t 6. The published itinerary was delivered in spades with special additions, sometimes twice a day. We never touched luggage, as it was moved for us from location to location. We never had to deal with tickets for transportation or museums. The local, private guides were super. The included dinners and wine were superb. This is a no driving, hassle free tour. We are planning to take another Story Small Group tour.

AND, as a special treat, the owner of the company was our tour captain. We tried several things that may be included in future itineraries. In the course of 9 days nothing flustered him. Everything was taken in stride, dealt with and resolved quickly. Nothing interfered with his fantastic service to his guests. We were not customers in any sense of the word. There was never a hint that Story was trying to watch the budget.

For those of you reading this and trying to decide, there are some things you need to consider. (When you have questions, call. You'll find that the Story help line is very knowledgeable and helpful.)

Small group - There were 15 people on our tour (16 is maximum). The tour caption had the time to get to know all of us. We saw lots of groups that appeared to be 40-50 people! You get to decide which is best for you. The smaller group = higher cost. We thought that it was easily worth it.

Walking - There is a lot of walking on this tour. There is always the option to use a taxi to get from place to place (extra cost). Some of the people on the tour with us had apps to count steps. Most showed more than 10,000 at noon time! MANY of those steps are on stairs and rough/cobble stone streets. Many of the stairs are inside attractions - not between them – so they can’t be avoided. By the end of our nine days, some tour group members were opting out of some planned activities. Opinion: If you can't complete a three mile walk, over uneven terrain, at a three mph pace (that's faster than most people walk), comfortably; get in shape. You’ll never do a constant three mile walk, on the tour – but it’ll feel like it.

Weather - We had fantastic weather! Temperature in the mid/low 70's and two sprinkles in nine days. Mostly sunshine. A great time to go.

Crowds - On the other hand, it wasn't such a great time to go. The crowds of tourists were overwhelming, everywhere except Cortona. I.E.: Our private, skip-the-line guided tour of the Vatican was especially BAD. We waited in line for about an hour and then once inside, we were literally shoulder to shoulder for the remaining two - three hours. It was nearly impossible to enjoy/understand what we were seeing. We spent more time trying to keep in sync with the group than looking at the art. The Sistine Chapel was NOT worth the time it took to get there. This was not something that Story could control. If the Vatican is important to you, go some other time of the year! If you are there during the busy season, opt out. There are thousands of fantastic things to see in Rome that won't be busy.

Security - We had a tour guide point out a small group of gypsy/pick-pockets as we exited the Vatican and steered us around them. That was the only "issue" in nine days - not a big deal. But, we were reminded to be "vigilant" many times - especially around crowds.

Navigation - Venice, Florence and Rome are VERY difficult to get around. There are many streets/alleys that run in apparently random directions. The maps available through hotels/tourist agents are not in adequate detail. Consider a hand-held GPS navigation system MANDITORY. Our phone did not have cell connectivity, so we down loaded the Google map. It worked once. Be very careful that you have a navigation device that works! Download a local map and test, test, test in airplane mode (?) before you go.

Driving – If you are going to Italy and renting a car, during the busy season, Venice allows no cars, problem solved. Driving in Florence and ESPECIALLY Rome is crazy. You've been forewarned.

Hotels - As it says, the hotels are in the center of the city/attractions. For example: the hotel in Rome was 200 feet from the Pantheon! This means that some of the buildings are more than 1,500 years old. You'll get used to seeing corners that you'd think should be 90 degrees, but aren't. Be prepared to spend time learning how things work and how to find your room - it'll be different from hotel to hotel and what you are used to! WiFi worked good in each hotel, except Rome. Small group travel is the best way to go! This is my first experience with Story Land & Sea and it won't be my last. The attention to detail that this agency provides met all of my expectations and more. There was a wonderful balance between "touring" together and personal time to explore locations on our own. The professional guides that were provided in each location were exceptional and the location of the hotels made it feel like we were locals. Truly a memorable experience!

We absolutely loved our Cities tour of Italy. David Douglas was an incredible captain, making sure everything was perfect. The trip
far surpassed our expectations in every way.
Hotels were in great locations and rooms were excellent. The restaurants chosen were fabulous, as were the tours in each city.
I strongly recommend the extension to the Amalfi Coast! It is breathtaking!

Itinerary

Day 1: Departure Day

Accommodation: Arusha Hotel, 1 Night upon arrival

Day one is your flight day into Kilimanjaro International Airport in Tanzania, unless you have taken the Kenya Pre-Tour, in which case you will take a short flight today from Nairobi, Kenya to the Kilimanjaro Airport, Arusha.

Please Note: If you are taking the Tanzania Safari only, then "Day 1" is the published tour date, and is the date you will arrange your air travel to depart your home airport. Your Small Group Tour will commence on Itinerary Day 2.

Arrival with Welcome Reception and Dinner

Today as you arrive to Tanzania you will be be met at the airport for your private vehicle transfer to our wonderful hotel. Lying on the gently rolling foothills that cascade down from the ever-present Mount Meru is the bustling and vibrant town of Arusha. Have time to relax before meeting your Tour Captain this evening for a reception and welcome dinner.

Day 2: Tanzania

Accommodation: Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge, 1 Night

To Ngorongoro Crater & Highlands

This morning we will depart Arusha in our Safari equipped vehicles making our way towards Ngorangoro we will engage in our first game drive. After a stop for a picnic lunch today we continue our game drive before arriving to our luxury lodge for the evening. Facing the always magnificent sunsets to the west, and located at the highest point on Ngorongoro crater's entire rim, Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge stands well over half a kilometer above the crater floor and offers unparalleled views across this enormous caldera. There will be time to freshen up this afternoon before we gather to watch the sun set over this magnificent wonder of the world.

Ngorongoro Crater

Buffet style breakfast and dinners with appetizing contemporary modern cuisine is prepared from the freshest produce, flavored and garnished using only the highest quality. A classic meeting spot is ‘Hatari’ Tavern (named after John Wayne’s movie made in 1962). John Wayne and the rest of the cast were frequent visitors to the hotel. Hatari has a large television screen to watch the latest sporting events and news made complete with the relaxed informal and comfortable surroundings.

Permanent Lodge

The Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge has an ideal location, as the only hotel on the east rim of the Crater it has commanding views into the Crater and is the only lodge situated to witness sunset across the Crater. Best of all it is perched by one of the only two access roads into the Crater and this road is used by only about 5% of the Crater traffic. This means you can take a picnic breakfast and be amongst the first to enter allowing you to get in faster and get more space away from the crowds for the prime early hours of the day. The hotel is comfortable and a good value for its outstanding location.

Day 3: To the Namiri Plains

Accommodation: Naimiri Plains Camp, 3 Nights

More of Ngorongoro Crater

Today, plan a full day to expand our scope of this amazing game reserve. We will be on the lookout for the Big Five.....Rhinos, Buffaloes, Leapords, Lions and Elephants. The Ngorongoro Crater is a world heritage site, the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and is commonly referred to as the 8th wonder of the world. With walls approx 2,000 feet high and 13 miles wide, the crater is a natural amphitheatre for the densest populations of large animals anywhere in Tanzania. Traveling through the crater on todays game drive we will most likely encounter a multitude of wildlife up close and personal. We make our way this day to the Serengeti where we base in our luxury tented camp for the next three nights. En route we plan to make a stop at a Maasai village for a culture experience.

The Maasai are an indigenous ethnic group of semi-nomadic people living in northern Tanzania and Kenya, and they are the only group allowed free travel over the border. The Maasai reside near many game parks and their dress is very distinctive. Consequently, they are probably the most well-known African ethnic group in the world.

Ngorongoro Crater

Lion, Hyeana, Black Rhino, Elephant, Buffalo, Zebra, Wildebeest

The Ngorongoro Crater is often called the 8th Wonder of the World. The crater was formed when a volcano collapsed creating the largest unbroken caldera on earth, almost 2,000 feet deep and 13 miles wide. Nearly 25,000 large mammals reside within the crater including some of Africa’s highest densities of lions and spotted hyenas.

This is the best location in Tanzania to spot the highly endangered black rhino. Elephant, buffalo, zebra, and wildebeest are all common and within this confined habitat very close up viewing is often possible.

Day 4: On Safari: Namiri Plains

Central Serengeti, Tanzania - 3 Nights in Luxury Tented Camping

We continue to explore and discover new experiences throughout the Central Serengeti. Each day brings a new chapter for our journey. Soak it in. Breathe in the Serengeti. Experience the wilds of Africa the way it used to be.Imagine an area where the sun seldom dawns without cheetah gaining on prey, rarely a day passes without spotting a leopard draped over the branch of a tree, and most nights are filled with the roar of lions. This is where our partner Asilia's Namiri Plains Camp opened in 2014. Namiri means, "Big Cat!"

Closed to the world for over 20 years to create a safe haven for cheetah breeding and research, today the area has an exceptional population of big cats including one of the highest densities of cheetah in East Africa.

Located 1.5 hours east of the popular Seronera area of the central Serengeti you will find very few vehicles.

Our approach to game sightseeing was inspired by our experiences with Denver-based Safari outfitter, The Wild Source, under the direction of wildlife biologist Bill Given. We encourage you to visit their website to learn about their unique approach to Africa - www.thewildsource.com).

The Story Africa Professional Guides have a no mileage limit policy that allows our guests easy exploration of the game rich sections of the Serengeti.

Namiri Plains Camp is in a favorite location of our Safari team as it is tucked into the eastern edge of the Seronera Valley. Located near the banks of the spring-fed Ngarenyuki River, as well close proximity to the Sametu Marsh, Barafu Kopjes, and Research Kopjes this location provides stunning opportunities for game viewing. We have found it an ideal location for nearby private big cat viewing as well as 'in-camp' viewing:

Namiri Plains Camp has been designed to combine the traditional bush style with a fresh modern feel focusing on attention to detail and high levels of personalised service. This eight-tented camp is ideal for safari enthusiasts wanting bush luxury, advanced guiding and a deeper wildlife experience.

Tonight enjoy a special dining experience from the Chef at Namiri.

Day 5: Namiri Plains

Central Serengeti

Today after a great breakfast we feature a full day game drive in the Central Serengeti with your Namiri Guides. For 20 years, the grasslands of the Eastern Serengeti were closed to tourists to allow the cheetah population to replenish itself. Today, this is big-cat territory, where cheetah roam the area in pursuit of prey, and lion and leopard hunt undisturbed.

Day 6: Serengeti

Northern Serengeti

This morning we are off to the airstip for another airhop to our next location in the Northern Serengeti, Kogatende. We will meet our Sayari guide upon arrival and head out for wildlife viewing on our game drive. We enjoy a wonderful picnic lunch in route and arrive to our camp in the afternoon where we will have time for drinks around the fireplace before another amazing evening in the Serengeti. The award-winning Sayari Camp is renowned for extraordinary wildlife sightings and supreme comfort. Set on the unspoilt plains of the Northern Serengeti, close to the famous Lamai Wedge, Sayari gives you easy access to the Mara River and multiple river crossing points.

Our Camp: Sayari Camp, 2 Nights

Luxury Tented Safari

Day 7: The Mara River

A magnificent day on Safari in far north Serengeti included the opportunity for viewing elephants and it is excellent big cat country with leopards and lion tucking into the rock kopjes areas and cheetah working the open plains. The area is best known for one of natures most dramatic spectacles as the great migration herds of wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River on a near daily basis. The crossings typically take place from mid-July through early October but do vary year to year.

Day 8: Farewell to the Serengeti

Kilimanjaro Airport Area, Tanzania

This morning, en route to the airstrip we take our final game drive on the Serengeti. Transfer by Asilia to Kogatende airstrip for a morning flight back to Arusha in time for lunch. We plan a visit to the Maasai Market and Cultural Heritage Center. We will also offer an optional visit from the Cultural Center to the Tanzanite Experience with time to shop. A bit later we transfer to the Kilimanjaro International Airport for departure flights home.
