Itinerary

Weekday Japanese Lessons

Language classes are held at Akamonkai for 3 hours a day Monday to Friday.

Accomodation

Dormitory and homestay and studio options are available. Please contact us to discuss.

Week 1:

DINE OUT AT AN IZAKAYA

No trip to Japan is complete without a trip to a traditional Izakaya for an after-school drink. Bond with your fellow travellers over a drink and some delicious food.

DISCOVER THE DAIBUTSU OF KAMAKURA

Take a trip out of Tokyo down to Kamakura to see the iconic Diabutsu and wander around the island of Enoshima. You might even get a glimpse of Fuji in the distance.

LEARN HOW TO WEAR A YUKATA

Learn how to properly wear a yukata, a traditional Japanese Kimono, and learn a Nihon Buyo, a traditional Japanese dance. You'll look like you've always lived here.

RELAX AT A TEA CEREMONY

It's the cornerstone of Japanese society and often known as Sado. Performance and green tea are at the heart of the Japanese tea ceremony. Why not bond with your new friends over this ancient ceremony.

TRY SOME CREATIVE CALLIGRAPHY

Japanese calligraphy or 'shodo' truly is an art form. Why not pick your favourite character from your lessons and turn it into your own personal artwork.

Week 2:

TOUR ZEN BUDDHIST TEMPLES

Come on down to Kyoto and visit Kinkakuji and Ryoanji, two of the most famous zen Buddhist temples in Japan.  Watch the golden temple, Kinkakuji sparkle in the summer sun.

HAVE FUN AT HANABI

Relax with a picnic at a traditional 'hanabi' or fireworks event with your new friends. Not before enjoying the chaos of a matsuri along the streets of Tokyo. These festivals are something to behold.

EAT DELICIOUS SWEETS AT A DAGASHI RESTAURANT

The perfect combination of a sweet shop and a bar, a trip to a Dagashi restaurant is a whole new take on a night out. This throwback from the Showa-era is a true treat.

GET CREATIVE WITH FUROSHIKI

Whether giving a gift or wrapping your lunch, add that truly special touch by learning this beautiful craft. Traditional furoshiki wrapping cloth brings an elegance to make it a true art.

Week 3:

SING YOUR HEART OUT AT KARAOKE

Get together and pick your favourite songs to sing along to. All the hits you can't get out of your head both Japanese and International!

MAKE SOME SUSHI

Learn the surprisingly delicate art of making the world's favourite Japanese food. See if you can make the nicest looking sushi.

BE LOUD AND LEARN TAIKO

Traditional Japanese drums commonly known as Taiko are great for making some noise. Watch some professionals at work, then give it a go yourself and see if you have the rhythm.

MAKE SOME TASTY WAGASHI

Join this alternative session and learn how to make wagashi - traditional Japanese sweets. See if you can craft with mochi and anko and then, best of all, taste your creations.

I went on the 4 week Summer Study Trip and it was the best time of my life. It was my first time traveling to Japan and this study trip was perfect as I was looking to learn some of the language as well as see and experience Japan. Akamonkai school and it's accommodation were great, staff were amazing, I made lifetime friendships.

I participated to the Otaku Japan Course in September 2017, although I selected the Bronze Plan because I wanted to focus on the study of Japanese. An amazing experience! The dorm was comfortable, located in a quiet area in Higashi Ueno that made me feel I was really living there (not sure this actually makes sense hahaha). Akamonkai school, then, with its teachers and classmates, was amazing and I could really improved my Japanese, especially my speaking which was terrible at the beginning.
Finally, Go! Go! Nihon staff was kind, funny and always available to those who needed help. I really recommend this experience to anyone who wants to try a “slice” of Japan, maybe before applying for a longer study period, or just to try a different kind of holiday! You’ll never regret!

I was part of the 2018 Youth Summer Course and it was amazing! A great chance to practice my Japanese with classes of the perfect level and a great immersion experience with chances to see some of the coolest sights of Japan. The Studytrip guides were amazing and respectful and I wasn't worried about being a minor alone in a foreign country. I would give 10 stars if I could!
