Short Description

Stories by Ken Burns... All days are similar to Red Rocks and Painted Canyons with the exception of days 2 and 3; have fun exploring Bryce Canyon and Zion national parks from classic inside-the-park lodges, take a rail journey to the Grand Canyon, go on a southwestern wildlife safari, do some flightseeing, and more... plus a complimentary night before your tour begins at Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North!

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Day 2 Wildlife Park Safari

Depart Scottsdale this morning and travel through stunning red-rock landscapes that once provided the backdrop for many Western movies. Arrive midday in the town of Williams, whose Main Street is known by another moniker - Route 66, one of America's most famed byways. Here your family is in for a real treat on a visit to Bearizona Wildlife Park. Located in the heart of Kaibob National Forest, embark on a private Tauck wilderness safari with a local guide who provides insights on the wildlife that live in the area. Bearizona is situated on approximately 160 acres; your safari takes you through miles of Ponderosa Pine Forest as you keep an eye out as for bears, cougars, foxes, deer, bison, and other animals in their natural habitats. Following your safari you'll witness a "Birds of Prey" free-flight presentation where you'll come face-to-face with hawks, owls, falcons and other raptors. Natural history comes alive as you learn interesting facts about these majestic birds and gain insights into conservation efforts... and at the show's end, you'll have an opportunity to get an up-close look and ask questions. The day concludes at the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel in Williams - perhaps a dip in the heated saltwater indoor pool before dinner?

Day 3 Grand Canyon Railway & on to Lake Powell

More than one mile deep, the Grand Canyon is connected with Bryce Canyon and Zion Canyon by a series of cliffs known as the Grand Staircase. Since 1901, from early years transporting ore through remote western landscapes to the present day, the steam-powered Grand Canyon Railway has played an important role in the story of Grand Canyon National Park. This morning your family travels first class, in restored cars, on an unforgettable ride to the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Built over 100 years ago, Williams Depot (at the south end of the train line, where you'll board) and the Grand Canyon Depot (the only "log" depot still in use, at northern end of the line) are national historic treasures. Along the way you'll hear folklore and tales from days gone by as the Old West truly comes to life... Arrive midday at the Grand Canyon's famed South Rim where the magnificence of the park is fully felt; it encompasses and surrounds you. Have lunch at a restaurant overlooking the canyon; the views are nothing short of spectacular. Following lunch, travel through more of Grand Canyon National Park and the Navajo Reservation en route to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Lake Powell, one of the largest man-made lakes in the world, for a two-night stay. And tonight... it's a pizza party dinner at your lakefront resort followed by a surprise... A perfect ending to a fantastic day.

Day 4 Fly over Rainbow Bridge and explore more of Lake Powell

Your adventures begin early morning at Lake Powell. Get a bird's-eye view of the amazing Rainbow Bridge, Glen Canyon and Lake Powell itself on a flightseeing expedition* (weather permitting) - or you can take an optional 4-hour flightseeing excursion* to explore famous Monument Valley with a Navajo guide, available at an additional cost (see Pricing & Availability or ask at booking for details). Later in the day, take a private lake cruise and guided tour to view colorful slot canyons in the Navajo Nation; difficult to reach and explore on your own, they are revered for their special beauty and change color as the sun moves overhead. Dine as you please at the resort tonight.

Day 5 Glen Canyon rafting, Old West fun & on to Bryce Canyon

No Arizona vacation would be complete without a canyon rafting experience - and your family will never forget floating along the Colorado River through Glen Canyon together aboard a raft* today, quietly spotting the animals who live amid the unique sandstone landscapes; pack your spirit of adventure - and your sunblock! Enjoy real Old-West-style entertainment during lunch in Kanab, Utah, this afternoon, another town you may recognize as the setting for many "cowboy" movies like Stagecoach and western TV shows from My Friend Flicka to Gunsmoke. Continue on to an overnight inside Bryce Canyon National Park, where you're treated to spectacular views of natural bridges, limestone cliffs and astounding stone spires, known as hoodoos, in shades of pink, red and orange.

LODGING : The Lodge at Bryce Canyon

Day 6 Ride the trails of Bryce Canyon's wonderland, then off to Zion

The hoodoos, spires, pinnacles and other amazing geologic formations of Bryce Canyon put on a magnificent "performance" as the rising sun plays over them - so you may want to get up extra early at your rustic lodge and walk ashort distance to catch the show! Weather permitting, you'll saddle up and share the adventure of a trail ride*, on either a horse or a mule, escorted by a cowboy guide who will point out hidden sights within Bryce Canyon's ever-changing world of naturally carved amphitheaters, rocky spires, gravity-defying bridges, balanced rocks and sculpted limestone cliffs. After lunch, it's off to Zion National Park, where your family joins us for a private tram tour of the park's highlights; overnight inside the park at historic Zion Lodge.

This afternoon, journey across a corner of the Mojave Desert from Utah to Nevada, arriving in legendary Las Vegas, a neon-bright world crafted by visionaries and entertainers. Take in the man-made wonders of this "city that never sleeps" before joining us for a farewell dinner as your family's southwestern vacation comes to an end.

My husband and I took the Treasures of the Mediterranean tour two weeks ago. The food off the ship was very good. The food on the ship was subpar (2 stars out of 4 stars). We ended up ordering French Fries at the beginning of each meal so we would at least have something to eat. I called Tauck and voiced my concerns. They offered us a $250 voucher each for another trip. I hardly think the food portion on the yacht was $250. Why would I go on another Tauck trip when my first one, which was our retirement celebration due to the poor food. The majority of the people on the trip were dissatisfied with the food and their reviews reflected it.

Focused on the amazing wildness of Alaska without worrying about the mundane details. Expert, low-key tour director made everything look easy. Excursions enhanced appreciation for the history, terrain, wildlife, peoples, boom and bust cycles that make Alaska so unique. Clear view of Denali, great weather, days 'at sea' with binoculars in hand!

Most Memorable Moment:
Flightseeing, Tundra Wilderness tour (clear Denali, rare wolf sighting and grizzlies in distance), crossing Prince William Sound (sea-otters, orcas, stellar sea-lions, and more), Hubbard Glacier calving, Glacier Bay entire day, Whale Watching out of Juneau, and bald eagles everywhere!

We were excited to have experienced 20 days of everything these 2 countries had to offer. We felt we didn't miss anything. Tauck knows how to provide you with the ultimate activities that any seasoned traveler walks away with and says WOW - truly an experience of a lifetime. Our tour Director Gary was an added plus.

Most Memorable Moment:
Too many to name, all planned activities were outstanding. We particularly enjoyed everything Queenstown had to offer. Probably the most impressive thing about the whole trip was that we got off each of our 6 private flights directly onto an awaiting bus and never during the 3 weeks did we touch our luggage.

San Jose, Costa Rica, where we began our trip, is at nearly 4000 ft, cool and surrounded by mountains. Panama City, where we ended is at sea level and hot with a modern skyline making for a huge change in climate and atmosphere. We began at a coffee plantation in the mountains and ended on a ship in the impressive Panama Canal. Wow what a contrast.

Most Memorable Moment:

Transiting the Panama Canal and also spending some time in a small boat on the canal. The boat took us into one of the many "inlets" of the canal created by the flooding of the Chagres river when the canal was built. The surroundings have been left as a jungle where we saw monkeys, a large crocodile and a number of birds. Totally unexpected.

The most indelible image of Costa Rica

The hotel choices were good and there was plenty of food. Lots of activities for the kids. But, we expected nature walks/hikes for the adults and the kids. That never happened. Where were the talks regarding ecology, wildlife, geology, whatever? The one and only wildlife talk we had was regarding insects, which was great and enjoyed by all.

Most Memorable Moment:
The most indelible image of Costa Rica was the rain forest and foliage. But if you ask my granddaughter, what she loved the most was the zip line and rafting down the river with the other kids. I genuinely enjoyed the visit to a wildlife rescue center, the chocolate factory and the pineapple plantation. Would have liked a hike though the forest.

The tour director was well-organized and managed the local guides really well. My only disappointment was that only 1.5 hours was allocated for the Great Wall of China, even though I could have spent all day hiking it. The dinners provided thorough samples of Chinese cuisine but were sometimes very long and tiring, exceeding 2 hours.

Most Memorable Moment:
The Hutong ride in Beijing and the balmy sunny weather during the transfer to my international flight home made me contemplate the charms of possibly living in Asia.
