Itinerary

Day 1: Costa Rica Experience Begins

Meals: Dinner

Accommodation: Selina San Jose

Plan to arrive into San Jose Airport (SJO) by 12 noon local time in order to get through customs and your luggage. Your guide will meet you in arrivals and help you get you and your luggage to your van. After settling in your room at the Selina Hostel you will have the opportunity to take an optional walking tour of San Jose. On this tour you will learn about the European architectural influence in the city, its history and iconic places. After your walking tour we recommend freshening up and preparing for a very unique dining experience!

Dinner will be held at a 1940 Victorian home run by chef Luis Protti. Chef Protti is dedicated to gastronomy and enology for 12 years. He graduated from hotel management and did a culinary program with Le Cordon Bleu. Somehow, he ended up partnering with yoga centers many years ago and to this day considers it his specialty (but you won’t feel like doing a downward dog after enjoying this meal). “Buchón” is the new stage of his career, an approach to the public in San José and you will have the pleasure to visit his house to enjoy a private meal with your fellow TVP’ers. Varios dietary restrictions can be accommodated. Afterwards you are free tohead back to the Selina Hostel or join the group for a night of drinks and dancing at Barrio La California, a well known area for bars, clubs and nightlife.

(Please note the walking tour is complimentary and tips to the guide are welcomed)

Day 2: Clouds & Coffee

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodations: Flutterby House (or similar)

You will have the opportunity to enjoy breakfast and coffee at the hotel before we get on the road and head to beach!

You will travel through the cloud forest, a place where some of the highest coffee is grown, passing “Cerro de la muerte” a unique scenery landmark full of mysticism and finally arrive to the lush jungle of “Uvita” beach for a sunset in the Pacific Ocean! You will be checking into the well known Flutterby House which is a quick jaunt from the beautiful and iconic “whale tail” of “Bahía Ballena. After the sun sets you will enjoy a delicious meal and drinks if you choose before retiring to your accommodations. You can also join those fellow TVP’ers who want to keep the party going before your big Day 3. The sounds of the rainforest will lull you to sleep this evening.

(Please note that yoga must be arranged directly with the property upon check in and morning coffee is not included)

Day 3-7: Off to Osa!

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodations: Piro Station, Osa Conservation

This morning feel free to get up with the sun and take a surf lesson or head down to the beach and relax. After breakfast we will embark on the road to the  “Peninsula de Osa” One of the most bio-diverse places on planet earth. Osa holds almost a 2.5% of the worldwide biodiversity on a less than a thousandth of a Per cent of the planet’s surface area. The peninsula is home to at least half of all species living in Costa Rica.

After arriving to the peninsula we will check in with amazing people who run Osa Conservation. You will all be staying in the Piro Station sharing private bathrooms and showers. A little bit of a glamping experience! Over the following 3.5 days you will get to help watch for sea turtle nests, check for puma tracks and clear nature trails. All to help conserve and research this important bastion of Ecology!

Your time at Osa will be a mixture of volunteering as well as free time and activities such as horseback riding to waterfalls, snorkelling and surfing. Activities will depend on the season (green or dry).

(Surfing is not included and we ask that you please let us know you are interested in this option at the time of booking)

Day 7: Our adventure continues

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodations: Selina Manuel Antonio (or similar)

You will wake up for your final breakfast of champions and then say “Farewell” to your new friends at Osa. Your fearless driver will pick you back up and you will have the opportunity to enjoy the morning around the funky ole gold mine town of Puerto Jimenez. While you are in this town you can choose to go snorkelling or just hang out and bask in the local scenery. After everyone is ready to head out you will experience a scenic drive through the coastal road to arrive to Manuel Antonio beach on the central Pacific.

After checking into your hotel you can shower off and grab some drinks with your fellow TVP’ers at the hotel bar. Once everyone is ready to go it’s time to head to dinner at a local haunt and drinks on the town!

(Snorkelling is not included and we ask that you confirm this with us at the time of booking)

Day 8: Do you know the way to San Jose?

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodations: Fauna Hostel

Manuel Antonio is a nature lover’s paradise, boasting rugged rainforest, white-sand beaches and coral reefs. An area renowned for its flora and fauna, from tropical plants to three-toed sloths and endangered white-faced capuchin monkeys, not to mention the hundreds of bird species who call this region home. Not only will you get the opportunity to see this by land but also by sea!

You will spend the morning on a catamaran boat and hopefully the whales and dolphins don’t have a big night out the previous evening (like you did) because they should be on full display today! You can either jump of the boat to go for a swim or grab some snorkel gear to check out the fish and then lounge while being served a typical Costa Rican meal on the boat, which will be the cherry on top.

In the afternoon you will make your way back to San Jose, but will make a stop to see one of the oldest living creatures on earth, the American crocodile! You will observe them taking a sunbath, swimming and even eating on “Rio Tarcoles”. You will also have the opportunity to try one of the oldest and most iconic ice creams of Costa Rica.

After checking into Fauna Hostel you will have a “Fiesta de Gallos” the Costa Rican version of tacos and then some samples of crafted beer at a popular local microbrewery. After this, your guide can facilitate one last night of revelry. Don’t miss the opportunity to party with your fellow TVP’ers one last time in this beautiful country.

(Your inclusive activity in Manuel Antonio may vary depending on weather and seasonality. Other options may include white water rafting or zip lining)

Day 9: Back to the grind

Today is the day that you hoped would never come! The finale of your Costa Rica TVP experience is here. You’ve completed your projects with Osa Conservation, you’ve connected wit your fellow travellers and hopefully you’re read to share what you’ve learned with everyone back home.

Before that you will be treated to one last TVP family meal and hopefully you will share stories from the previous evening. You will then pack up and get on the provided transportation to San Jose Airport (SJO).

Traveling to Costa Rica with TVP was unlike any travel experience I have had before

Traveling to Costa Rica with TVP was unlike any travel experience I have had before. Prior to the TVP trip in September, I had never been to Costa Rica or been part of a tour. I admittedly did not know what to expect giving up control of planning my trip, but could not have asked for a better experience. Every detail was expertly chosen, from the intimate welcome dinner giving the group time to meet one another, to the downtime built into volunteer days and ending with a relaxing day at the beach. Being part of this tour gave me the opportunity to see a side to Costa Rica I had no idea existed based on friends previous travel accounts. Participating in a beach clean up of an uninhabited beach and realizing how much trash washes up from ocean pollution was eye opening. Rescuing baby sea turtles the next day reinforced how important it is to keep our oceans and beaches clean. I cannot wait to be a part of future TVP trips!!

The most unique and meaningful trip I can remember going on. I can't emphasize the authenticity of the experience enough. Our guide was incredible and introduced us to amazing people - artists, musicians, chefs and entrepreneurs. The work we did was impactful and left a lasting impression on me. The food was great and our trip organizers ensured we were having fun at all points. I was surrounded by amazing people and the more I talk about the trip with others, the greater the appreciation I have for the experience TVP cultivated for me.

Have you ever felt like the country you're visiting surprises you every day? I have and it was thanks to The Vacation Project! I had been to Costa Rica about seven times before but I had NEVER experienced the country the way I did last week. From the welcoming city tour to the last glass of wine at our goodbye dinner, every detail and every personality in the group was accounted for. My favorite part was visiting the Costa Rican rain forest, walking through the jungle and seeing sea turtles nesting under the gaze of the full moon. I made new friends and long lasting memories while re-discovering a country very close and near to my heart. I hope that millions of people get to experience what I experienced on this trip, as I have come back renewed and aware of my place in nature and the world... also the food was amazing !
