Short Description

High octane or slow and steady, this trip switches up the pace every day. Learn from Maori people, raft the white waters, slip into mudbaths and throw yourself off a bridge (with the help of a bungy cord)! You’ll see movie-worthy scenery, lush greenery and volcanic vistas. Kia Ora!

Groups are between 25-60 people, typically ~30-40. Usually there will be many opportunities to split off and enjoy meals and excursions in smaller groups. This is the most economical way to travel, saving up to 40% versus booking the same itinerary yourself.

Itinerary

Day 1

From Auckland, we head south to the heartbeat of Maori culture in Rotorua. Sure it’s known for being a steamy thermal playground and an area of natural beauty, but it’s the distinct aroma that’ll greet your first. Breathe in that sulphuric goodness! Then, enjoy a warm welcome at a traditional Maori Marae. After a hearty, family-style dinner, learn about Maori history and watch an exclusive cultural performance by the Te Arawa people. You’ll be a Haka expert by the end of the night.

Note: Pack down to an overnight bag to stay at the Marae.
Included today:
-Maori Marae cultural talks

-Dinner

Day 2

After breakfast, it’s farewell to the Marae. The day is yours to play with! There are a whole heap of optional activities to pick from. Feeling lazy? Visit the famous thermal spa pools or have a relaxing massage. Or you could race around on a mountain bike, go whitewater rafting or try the original OGO Zorb. Hobbit fans could go for The Hobbiton Movie Set Tour. You’ll venture through Middle Earth, get lost among the Hobbit holes and see the scenery from the film in what you could call super HD! Tonight, settle in to Rotorua’s largest hotel, set right on the shores of the beautiful Lake Rotorua.

Today we travel through the Taupo Volcanic Zone, with a detour to see (and hear) the gurgling Mud Pool. Then it’s on to the raging waters of Huka Falls before reaching Lake Taupo. And what better way to see the lake than leaping out over it at Taupo Bungy ? (It’s optional, so don’t worry if you don’t have a head for heights.) After a bit of time in Taupo to see the sights/still any wobbly legs, it’s on to the vast volcanic plateau of Tongariro National Park. It’s World Heritage listed don’t you know?! This evening, relax. There’s a sauna and spa. Or head straight for the terrace bar for a drink by the fire. We’ll have a hearty country-style meal – just leave room for dessert – it’s a Kiwi favourite, pavlova.

Day 4

Two active volcanoes, old lava flows, an active vent, emerald lakes and amazing views. The optional Tongariro Crossing is one of the best full day hikes you can do in NZ. It’s a free day, so you’ve got the time. There are some shorter walks too. You’ll definitely need your camera for today’s free day. Nelson is stunning. Amazing staff who are very friendly and also extremely knowledgeable. My trip was amazing and I enjoyed every minute of it. I did the Spirit of Europe last year and couldn’t recommend Topdeck enough.

I jumped on this tour with very little notice and planning, and I was thoroughly impressed. Our Topdeck trip leader was very knowledgeable, fun, and adjusted the trip to the group (34 people). The meals provided were delicious, and they worked hard to cater to dietary needs. Accommodations were good, typically with 2-6 people in a hostel room. Keep in mind they are hostels, not hotels (bring your own towel).

I loved the itinerary, as it highlighted the must-see places and had variety (ex. Paris, Rome vs. Switzerland). The optionals in each city were all wonderful. However, many were not presented in the Topdeck literature online and were not introduced on the trip more than a day in advance. All are paid for in cash (Euros). Because of how the optionals were presented, it was a bit harder to budget. I would recommend inquiring more about the optionals when booking and at the beginning of your tour via your trip leader. Don't feel pressured to do all of them and remember to keep your own interests in mind.

The solo travelers easily found others with similar interests to explore with. For many on this trip, drinking and going out to bars/clubs was a major component (as alcohol is often cheaper than water). Because of the shortness of this tour along with all the destinations, prepare for lots of driving and to make the most of the time you have in each city.

This trip provided am amazing sampling of Western Europe and opened my eyes to cultures and history I was unfamiliar with. Overall, I would highly recommend this itinerary and touring company, as it provided a good balance between budget and experiences.

P.S. Stay flexible with plans, but some of the popular sights need more pre-planning than expected, like the Eiffel Tower and the Anne Frank House (Amsterdam).

Overall amazing value. Food, particularly by Topdeck staff, excellent. Spontaneous/flexible; be prepared to pay for lots of extra excursions, on and off your itinerary, in cash.

Food was excellent. Accomodations were better than expected: hostels, but usually with in-suite bathrooms and always only with other members of your tour of the same gender. Don't try to overplan; trip is quite spontaneous and flexible and you won't know much about the schedule/optionals for each city more than a day or so in advance. Optionals will be plentiful and paid in cash. Only do those that are right for you, even if your trip leader really encourages them and most other people are going. These trips are great for solo travelers, but make sure you find people interested in the same things as you...it will probably be easy to find groups to go to bars and clubs with in the evenings, but harder to find people who prefer other evening plans. Driver was excellent and bus was very comfortable and clean, but be prepared to spend a lot of time on it as there is no driving at night. Trip leader extremely knowledgeable, experienced, and helpful. Overall, excellent value and a trip with plenty of time to see the bucket list highlights in each city.

Did Uluru discovery in Australia and Grand Kiwi in NZ back in November and it was the most amazing experience ever! Awesome guide and driver. Well organized and took great care of us!
Only one bad hostel accommodation wise, but other than that it was amazing.
It was so nice not having to worry about accommodations, transportation, and most meals when we got there! On the days it wasn’t included, the guide/driver would tell us what’s in the area!
For sure will be doing another topdeck tour in the future!

My partner and I just completed the 20 day Discover Winter tour and it was absolutely outstanding! What really made the trip though was the Trip Leader, Alex, and the driver, Deyan. They were both extremely knowledgeable people and explained everything we needed to know to enjoy every place we went to. I highly recommend this tour and hope that everybody else has the opportunity to meet Alex and Deyan.

You will use a variety of multi-share accommodation, which may include hotels, hostels, motels, cabins, an overnight boat and even a traditional Maori marae! The number of people in a room varies depending on the type of accommodation. To keep costs down accommodation is based on a four-share, same sex basis.

The 'More Inclusions' section of this document details what type of accommodation is used for our overnight stops.

If you are travelling with a friend and require twin or double accommodation, this is available at a small extra charge and can be requested at the time of booking.

Meals Included:

Your included meals are detailed in the 'More Inclusions' sectio n of this document.

Breakfasts are included each day (except on the first morning). A typical breakfast consists of cereals with milk or yoghurt, bread, a range of spreads, and fruit juice, tea or coffee. It is rare to get a hot breakfast, though on some occasions it may be available.

Included evening meals will be combination of those prepared by the Topdeck Road Crew, local restaurants and places in which we stay.

If you have any dietary requirements we will make every effort to cater to your specific needs as long as you advise your travel agent or Topdeck Trip Consultant when you book. But please be aware that although we will do everything in our power to arrange it, we cannot guarantee that every restaurant we use will be able to cater to all dietary needs. We also cannot cater for tastes or dislikes, as most of our included evening meals feature a set menu.
