Back in the heyday of Arrowtown, everyone was here for the gold. Today jump on a bike and cruise along the Arrow River Rail Trail. Then chill out by the crystal clear river waters while you catch your breath. Cue relaxation and a chance to practice your stone-skimming skills in Lake Ohau.

Included today:
-Mountain Bike ride along Arrow River

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Dinner

Day 7

Lap up Lake Pukaki under the shadow of Mt Cook. It's about as Kiwi as 'fush and chups' (fish and chips with a local accent). Then shift into sheep country, where these furry things outnumber humans 7:1. It makes sense that today includes the Church of the Good Shepherd, a monument to the faithful sheep dog. Then on to Christchurch, which has recovered from the 2011 earthquake and bounced back with new pop-up bars and a shopping precinct, with still more to come.

Included today:
-Mt Cook Village (weather dependent)
-Scenic walks

Meals:
-Breakfast

Day 8

From NZ's 'Garden City' and through the North Canterbury vineyards, we'll head into Kaikoura. A place so famous for a certain type of crustacean, that they stuck it in the name (Kai = Food, Koura = Crayfish / Lobster). You'll walk across the site of an ancient Maori Pa (fortified village), and get to taste what all the fuss is about with a crayfish tester.

Included today:
-Kaikoura Peninsula walk
-Crayfish tastings

Meals:
-Breakfast

Optional Activities:
- Dolphin swimming
- Whale watching
- Seal swimming (October to May)
- Kayaking

Day 9

Here's a place where you won't mind getting up a little earlier than usual. Heck, even the sunrise here is the thing dreams are made of. Today's your day to head out to see and swim amongst hundreds of wild dolphins and see whales in their natural habitat. Then we hit the road for the top of the South, Nelson.

Meals:
-Breakfast

Optional activities:
-Dolphin swimming
-Whale watching
-Seal swimming (October to May)

Day 10

Explore the beautiful Abel Tasman National Park by boat, walking track, kayak, or see it all from above with a skydive. Or go treasure hunting in Nelson's galleries. Round out the day with a traditional Kiwi BBQ dinner catered by yours truly. Not bad, Nelson. Not bad.

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Dinner

Optional activities:
-Kayaking
-Skydiving

Day 11

Wake up and fall straight into the arms of the world's best Sauv Blanc for a private tasting in a family-owned vineyard. With postcard-perfect vistas and 35,000 hectares under vines, it's a slice of heaven. Next up: a ferry through Marlborough Sounds and across the Cook Strait to the capital of New Zealand (no, it's not Auckland!). With more bars, restaurants and cafes per capita than New York, you won't be bored.

Included today:
-Cook Strait ferry crossing
-Marlborough wine tasting

Meals:
-Breakfast

Day 12

After a morning spent in the Nation's capital city we roll on to the World Heritage-listed Tongariro National Park. It's also time to meet the dessert that's caused a long-standing feud between NZ and Australia since someone whipped an egg white: the pavlova!

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Dinner

Day 13

With dual cultural and natural heritage status, and often described as the most epic hike in NZ, Tongariro NP is home to two active volcanoes that will hopefully keep a lid on things. The optional Tongariro Alpine Crossing will quickly top your list of favourites if you don't mind heights and the odd dormant lava chamber (and walks from 20 mins to 8 hours).

Included today:
-Short walks

Meals:
-Breakfast

Optional activities:
-Tongariro Crossing hikes

Day 14

Lake Taupo was formed by an explosion that extended the Ice Age, so yeah, it's pretty big. It's also the perfect place to bungy jump off a ledge. Prepare for a night of Maori legends and mythology in a marae (sacred meeting house). You have one night here, so pay attention. After learning the tongue-thrusting Haka dance moves of the All Blacks and the finesse of the ladies’ Poi dance, you’ll polish off a traditional maori dinner and end the night feeling like a local. You lucky thing, you.

Included today:
-Visit Huka Falls
-Visit Lake Taupo
-Maori Marae cultural talks
-Haka & Poi class

Please note that the twin / double / or single upgrade is not applicable to the Overnight Maori Marae Stay in Rotorua. This was not included when upgrade rates were calculated.

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Dinner

Optional activities:
-Taupo bungy jump

Day 15

Mud, Middle Earth and massages are the order of the day in the bubbling, sulphur-soaked town of Rotorua. If you're starting to resemble a muddy prune, flush out the mud by rafting over the waterfalls, head to the spa for a massage, or jump into the real-life landscapes of Tolkien's dreams on the Hobbiton Shire escape (all optional).

Meals:
-Breakfast

Optional activities:
-Hobbiton tour
-Hells Gate Mud Baths
-Canopy tours
-Experience Ogo
-Whitewater Rafting

Day 16

Wave bye-bye to the wilds of Rotorua - we'll swing by the Waitomo Caves. Take optionals and go exploring this otherworldy attraction. It's back to the modern world today as we travel onwards to Auckland.

Optional activities:
- Black water rafting
- Glow worm caves tour
- Ruakuri Cave Tour

Meals:
-Breakfast

Day 17

James Cook named our next stop the 'Bay of Islands'. Well, you know what to expect. Seeing all 144 islands might take a while, so grab the optional 'Rock the Boat' island tour for 24 solid hours cruising and snorkeling the archipelago. Instagram your first Pacific sunset then get your mind blown by the southern night sky. You could get used to this.

**Pre-book your Rock the Boat trip to secure a spot as spaces fill up quickly. All meals, epic company and good times included.
Please note that the twin / double / or single upgrade is not applicable to the Overnight Rock The Boat Upgrade. This was not included when upgrade rates were calculated.

Optional activities:
-Rock the Boat trip

Meals:
-Breakfast

Day 18

Grab a kayak and paddle under the Haruru Falls (optionals). We're having a kiwi fave for dinner so good thing you did all that exercise.

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Dinner

Optional activities:
-Kayak Haruru Falls
- Skydiving

Day 19

NZ is so gorgeous it has waterfalls like Whangarei hidden just off the highway. We'll make a pit stop to walk to the falls on our way back to Auckland. We wrap things up here but where will you go next?

Meals:
-Breakfast

Amazing staff who are very friendly and also extremely knowledgeable. My trip was amazing and I enjoyed every minute of it. I did the Spirit of Europe last year and couldn’t recommend Topdeck enough.

I jumped on this tour with very little notice and planning, and I was thoroughly impressed. Our Topdeck trip leader was very knowledgeable, fun, and adjusted the trip to the group (34 people). The meals provided were delicious, and they worked hard to cater to dietary needs. Accommodations were good, typically with 2-6 people in a hostel room. Keep in mind they are hostels, not hotels (bring your own towel).

I loved the itinerary, as it highlighted the must-see places and had variety (ex. Paris, Rome vs. Switzerland). The optionals in each city were all wonderful. However, many were not presented in the Topdeck literature online and were not introduced on the trip more than a day in advance. All are paid for in cash (Euros). Because of how the optionals were presented, it was a bit harder to budget. I would recommend inquiring more about the optionals when booking and at the beginning of your tour via your trip leader. Don't feel pressured to do all of them and remember to keep your own interests in mind.

The solo travelers easily found others with similar interests to explore with. For many on this trip, drinking and going out to bars/clubs was a major component (as alcohol is often cheaper than water). Because of the shortness of this tour along with all the destinations, prepare for lots of driving and to make the most of the time you have in each city.

This trip provided am amazing sampling of Western Europe and opened my eyes to cultures and history I was unfamiliar with. Overall, I would highly recommend this itinerary and touring company, as it provided a good balance between budget and experiences.

P.S. Stay flexible with plans, but some of the popular sights need more pre-planning than expected, like the Eiffel Tower and the Anne Frank House (Amsterdam).

Overall amazing value. Food, particularly by Topdeck staff, excellent. Spontaneous/flexible; be prepared to pay for lots of extra excursions, on and off your itinerary, in cash.

Food was excellent. Accomodations were better than expected: hostels, but usually with in-suite bathrooms and always only with other members of your tour of the same gender. Don't try to overplan; trip is quite spontaneous and flexible and you won't know much about the schedule/optionals for each city more than a day or so in advance. Optionals will be plentiful and paid in cash. Only do those that are right for you, even if your trip leader really encourages them and most other people are going. These trips are great for solo travelers, but make sure you find people interested in the same things as you...it will probably be easy to find groups to go to bars and clubs with in the evenings, but harder to find people who prefer other evening plans. Driver was excellent and bus was very comfortable and clean, but be prepared to spend a lot of time on it as there is no driving at night. Trip leader extremely knowledgeable, experienced, and helpful. Overall, excellent value and a trip with plenty of time to see the bucket list highlights in each city.

Did Uluru discovery in Australia and Grand Kiwi in NZ back in November and it was the most amazing experience ever! Awesome guide and driver. Well organized and took great care of us!
Only one bad hostel accommodation wise, but other than that it was amazing.
It was so nice not having to worry about accommodations, transportation, and most meals when we got there! On the days it wasn’t included, the guide/driver would tell us what’s in the area!
For sure will be doing another topdeck tour in the future!

My partner and I just completed the 20 day Discover Winter tour and it was absolutely outstanding! What really made the trip though was the Trip Leader, Alex, and the driver, Deyan. They were both extremely knowledgeable people and explained everything we needed to know to enjoy every place we went to. I highly recommend this tour and hope that everybody else has the opportunity to meet Alex and Deyan.
