Itinerary

Day 1

Roll across the pastoral patchwork quilt that forms the Canterbury Plains and watch green melt into snow-topped peaks. Hang out in Hokitika for whitebait fritters and Pounamu (Jade) shopping, then take your best photography shot of NZ's two tallest mountain peaks reflected in Lake Matheson for the #picoftheday. Excited? You should be.

Included today:
-Lake Matheson walk

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Dinner

Day 2

Today's your chance to walk on water. Well, frozen glacial water to be precise. Scale a mountain in minutes to get amongst ethereal ice caves and formations. With barely enough time to let your heart rate slow, we journey back through the mountains past Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea. Feel your pulse start to quicken as we roll into Queenstown.

Meals:
-Breakfast

Optional activities:
-Fox Glacier hikes
-Helicopter scenic glacier flights
-Glacier transfers

Day 3

Here's some basic math: Queenstown has over 220 activities-you have two days. No rush. This lakeside city has adrenaline on tap and will match any adventure you had in mind and then throw a Fergburger (amazing Queenstown burger place) in there for good measure. Get your fix with bungy, a narrow canyon swing, Shotover Jet, or paragliding, hiking, horse riding and the skyline gondola. If you're bored here, there's something wrong. Need some time out? Head to the Kiwi Birdlife Park, or kick back with a local pinot.

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Dinner

Optional activities:
-Jet boating
-Bungy jumping
-Canyon swinging
-Horse riding
-Skydiving
-Skiing in winter
-Wine tours
-Hang-gliding
-Zip lining
-Birdlife park
-Whitewater rafting

Day 4

Free day, take two. Jump off more stuff or chill out and let your pulse drop. Your call.

Day 5

By now you might be becoming a little desensitised to the otherworldly beauty of NZ but when you see the Fjords for the first time, it's okay to enter a total Instagram meltdown! Carved by glaciers during the ice age, the Milford Sound comes complete with seals, dolphins and thundering waterfalls. Steeped in Maori myth, this is a history and geology lesson rolled into one, minus the homework.

Included today:
-Milford Sound Nature Cruise
-Fiordland National Park walks

Meals:
-Breakfast

Day 6

Back in the heyday of Arrowtown, everyone was here for the gold. Recharge your batteries with venison burgers and a central Otago pinot noir in Arrowtown then zigzag across the five bridges that span the ever-changing Arrow River. Test your nerves on the suspension bridge then chill out by the crystal clear river waters while you catch your breath. Cue relaxation and a chance to practice your stone-skimming skills in Lake Ohau.

Included today:
-Mountain bike ride (13km/2hrs) along Arrow River

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Dinner

Day 7

Lap up Lake Pukaki under the shadow of Mt Cook. It's about as Kiwi as 'fush and chups' (fish and chips with a local accent). Then shift into sheep country, where these furry things outnumber humans 12:1. It makes sense that today includes the Church of the Good Shepherd, a monument to the faithful sheep dog and a chance to watch them in action on a Kiwi farm. Then back to into the city of Churches as our trip winds to a close.

Included today:
-Mt Cook Village (weather dependant)
-Scenic walks

Amazing staff who are very friendly and also extremely knowledgeable. My trip was amazing and I enjoyed every minute of it. I did the Spirit of Europe last year and couldn’t recommend Topdeck enough.

I jumped on this tour with very little notice and planning, and I was thoroughly impressed. Our Topdeck trip leader was very knowledgeable, fun, and adjusted the trip to the group (34 people). The meals provided were delicious, and they worked hard to cater to dietary needs. Accommodations were good, typically with 2-6 people in a hostel room. Keep in mind they are hostels, not hotels (bring your own towel).

I loved the itinerary, as it highlighted the must-see places and had variety (ex. Paris, Rome vs. Switzerland). The optionals in each city were all wonderful. However, many were not presented in the Topdeck literature online and were not introduced on the trip more than a day in advance. All are paid for in cash (Euros). Because of how the optionals were presented, it was a bit harder to budget. I would recommend inquiring more about the optionals when booking and at the beginning of your tour via your trip leader. Don't feel pressured to do all of them and remember to keep your own interests in mind.

The solo travelers easily found others with similar interests to explore with. For many on this trip, drinking and going out to bars/clubs was a major component (as alcohol is often cheaper than water). Because of the shortness of this tour along with all the destinations, prepare for lots of driving and to make the most of the time you have in each city.

This trip provided am amazing sampling of Western Europe and opened my eyes to cultures and history I was unfamiliar with. Overall, I would highly recommend this itinerary and touring company, as it provided a good balance between budget and experiences.

P.S. Stay flexible with plans, but some of the popular sights need more pre-planning than expected, like the Eiffel Tower and the Anne Frank House (Amsterdam).

Overall amazing value. Food, particularly by Topdeck staff, excellent. Spontaneous/flexible; be prepared to pay for lots of extra excursions, on and off your itinerary, in cash.

Food was excellent. Accomodations were better than expected: hostels, but usually with in-suite bathrooms and always only with other members of your tour of the same gender. Don't try to overplan; trip is quite spontaneous and flexible and you won't know much about the schedule/optionals for each city more than a day or so in advance. Optionals will be plentiful and paid in cash. Only do those that are right for you, even if your trip leader really encourages them and most other people are going. These trips are great for solo travelers, but make sure you find people interested in the same things as you...it will probably be easy to find groups to go to bars and clubs with in the evenings, but harder to find people who prefer other evening plans. Driver was excellent and bus was very comfortable and clean, but be prepared to spend a lot of time on it as there is no driving at night. Trip leader extremely knowledgeable, experienced, and helpful. Overall, excellent value and a trip with plenty of time to see the bucket list highlights in each city.

Did Uluru discovery in Australia and Grand Kiwi in NZ back in November and it was the most amazing experience ever! Awesome guide and driver. Well organized and took great care of us!
Only one bad hostel accommodation wise, but other than that it was amazing.
It was so nice not having to worry about accommodations, transportation, and most meals when we got there! On the days it wasn’t included, the guide/driver would tell us what’s in the area!
For sure will be doing another topdeck tour in the future!

My partner and I just completed the 20 day Discover Winter tour and it was absolutely outstanding! What really made the trip though was the Trip Leader, Alex, and the driver, Deyan. They were both extremely knowledgeable people and explained everything we needed to know to enjoy every place we went to. I highly recommend this tour and hope that everybody else has the opportunity to meet Alex and Deyan.

Accomodations

On your trip you will stay at a variety of multi-share accommodation, which may include hostels, motels, cabins, lodges, and camping out in tents and even a traditional Aussie swag! The number of people in a room varies depending on the type of accommodation. To keep costs down accommodation is based on a multi-share, same sex basis.

The 'More Inclusions' section of this document details what type of accommodation will be used for our overnight stops.

If you are travelling with a friend and require twin or double accommodation, this is available at a small extra charge (not available while in the Northern Territory). Should this be required, you can select this at the time of booking.

Meals Included:

Your included meals are detailed in the 'More Inclusions' section of this document.

Breakfasts are included each day (except on the first morning). A typical breakfast consists of cereals with milk or yoghurt, bread, a range of spreads, and fruit juice, tea or coffee. It is rare to get a hot breakfast, though on some occasions it may be available.

Included evening meals will be combination of those prepared by the Topdeck Road Crew, local restaurants and places in which we stay.

If you have any dietary requirements we will make every effort to cater to your specific needs as long as you advise your travel agent or Topdeck Trip Consultant when you book. But please be aware that although we will do everything in our power to arrange it, we cannot guarantee that every restaurant we use will be able to cater to all dietary needs. We also cannot cater for tastes or dislikes, as most of our included evening meals feature a set menu.
