Short Description

What could be better than watching gorillas kicking back in their natural habitat? Nothing, that’s what. Gorillas are our closest relatives, so it’s no wonder we homosapiens are so intrigued by these gentle giants. On this once-in-a-lifetime trek through the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, you’ll be one of the lucky few who get to see the last remaining mountain gorillas. Ready to rally the troops? Let’s go!

Groups are between 25-60 people, typically ~30-40. Usually there will be many opportunities to split off and enjoy meals and excursions in smaller groups. This is the most economical way to travel, saving up to 40% versus booking the same itinerary yourself.

Itinerary

Day 1

Welcome to your African adventure! From Kampala, we travel west towards Queen Elizabeth National Park, once more over the Equator and through fertile, green-terraced hillsides, lush banana plantations and tangled forests. Keep your eyes peeled for the herds of Ankole cattle, with their incredible long, curved horns, roaming the roads and paddocks. Setting up camp just a short distance from the Queen Elizabeth National Park, you'll have the chance to kick back and unwind, take a walk in the surrounding areas and mingle with the community, local style.

Included today:
-Queen Elizabeth National Park chimpanzee trekking on either day 1 or day 2

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Lunch
-Dinner

Day 2

This morning we enter the Queen Elizabeth National Park and take in the magnificent views of the mountains that separate Uganda from central Africa, as well as Lakes Edwards and George. Queen Elizabeth National Park has over 500 species of birds and 100 species of mammals, making it one of the most bio-diverse national parks in the world. Nearby, we visit the Kyambura Gorge for an exciting trek to see the chimpanzees. On departing the National Park, we make our way to the stunning Lake Bunyonyi - the perfect place to unwind, relax and explore (on the days that we don't trek to see the mountain gorillas, of course).

Included today:
-Queen Elizabeth National Park chimpanzee trekking on either day 1 or day 2

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Lunch
-Dinner

Day 3

Over the next three days, you and your adventure buddies will be split into two groups. On the first day, one group will trek to witness the amazing mountain gorillas up close, while the others have a free day of chilling out on the lake. Then the next day, the groups swap.

On the day of our trek, we gather in the early morning to meet our local guide and tracker. The area that we explore is home to the world's remaining 700 mountain gorillas, many of which inhabit the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (please note that occasionally we may need to travel into neighbouring Rwanda to see the gorillas). The trek into the thick rainforest can be demanding at times, with uneven terrain and hilly rainforest, but the privilege of spending time with a family of these gentle primates makes the effort more than well worthwhile.

Please note: Depending on the availability of the chimpanzee and gorilla permits, the tour itinerary may vary from the brochure itinerary. From time to time, we may have to trek on different days. If at any time our gorilla trek should be in another neighbouring country, i.e Rwanda (instead of Uganda) this may entail extra visa fees, although we shall endeavour to advise you before departure of any significant changes to the tour itinerary. Please take the above itinerary as a guideline only.

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Lunch
-Dinner

Day 4

If you're not on today's trek, take advantage of your free time by the lake with an abundance of boredom-killer activities. Hire canoes and swing by some of the islands, wander the local tribes and villages, visit the local orphanage, and channel your inner explorer with a nature walk. Alternatively, kick your feet up at camp and catch up on the diary or postcards back home.

Included today:
-Gorilla trekking on either day 4 or day 5

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Lunch
-Dinner

Optional activities:
-Island boat trips
-Village walk
-Traditional dancing
-Bird watching
-Canoe hire

Day 5

For those with a free day, spend your time swanning around the campsite, canoe the lake's peaceful waters or discover why the stunning area is known as the 'place of many birds' with a spot of bird watching. Today's on your watch, so spend it as you see fit.

Included today:
-Gorilla trekking on either day 4 or day 5

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Lunch
-Dinner

Optional activities:
-Island boat trips
-Village walk
-Traditional dance
-Bird watching
-Canoe hire

Day 6

Leaving Lake Bunyonyi, we make our way back across the equator through lush pasture lands and the northern reaches of Africa's largest lake, Lake Victoria, to Kampala. A hotspot for great food and entertainment, Kampala is the perfect place to bid farewell to the week that was.

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Lunch

Day 1

From Kampala we’ll travel west towards Queen Elizabeth National Park, checking out green terraced hillsides, lush banana plantations, steep mountains and tangled forests along the way. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for herds of Ankole cattle! When we reach the national park, a spot of chimpanzee trekking is on the cards. OMG.

Included today:
-Queen Elizabeth National Park chimpanzee trek (either day 1 or day 2)

Meals:
-Lunch
-Dinner

Day 2

If the amazing mountain #views aren’t enough for you this morning, wait till you see Lake Edwards and Lake George! Did you know? Queen Elizabeth National Park has over 500 species of birds and 100 species of mammals, making it one of the most biodiverse national parks in the world. If you’re lucky, you might get to spot a few critters en route to Kyambura Gorge for the trek to see the chimpanzees (if you didn’t already make this journey yesterday). Unlike their mountain gorilla cousins, chimps live mostly in the trees, so keep an eye up high!

Included today:
-Queen Elizabeth National Park chimpanzee trek (either day 1 or day 2)

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Lunch
-Dinner

Day 3

Over the next three days, you and your adventure buddies will be split into two groups. On the first day, one group will trek to see the amazing mountain gorillas up close, while the others will have a free day of chilling out on the lake. Then the next day, the groups will swap.

Quick fact: the Lake Bunyonyi region is home to the world’s remaining 770 mountain gorillas, many of which inhabit the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. On the day of our trek, we’ll meet our local guide and tracker bright and early before venturing into the rainforest. The trek can be demanding at times (look out for uneven terrain and hill climbs), but trust us – the privilege of spending time with a family of these gentle giants will make the effort totally worthwhile. Excited yet? We sure are!

What can you do at Lake Bunyonyi when you’re not trekking, you ask? Good question. Take your pick from our optionals: hire a canoe, hop on a boat trip or check out a traditional dance performance. If you’re all about the animal life, you can even indulge in a spot of bird watching. Wanna chill? We won’t judge. You’ll have plenty of time to relax around camp and send a few postcards home.

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Lunch
-Dinner

Day 4

If you’re not on today’s trek, take advantage of some free time by the lake with a bunch of boredom-killer activities. Hire canoes and swing by some of the islands, wander the local villages or channel your inner explorer with a nature walk.

Included today:
-Mountain gorilla trek (either day 4 or day 5)

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Lunch
-Dinner

Optional activities:
-Island boat trip
-Visit a local village
-Hire a canoe
-Watch a traditional dance
-Go bird watching

Day 5

Got a free day? Yesterday’s optionals are still here for you! Spend your time swanning around the campsite or discover why this area is known as the ‘place of many birds’ with a spot of bird watching. What’s it gonna be?

Included today:
-Mountain gorilla trek (either day 4 or day 5)

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Lunch
-Dinner

Optional activities:
-Island boat trip
-Visit a local village
-Hire a canoe
-Watch a traditional dance

Day 6

Today it’s back over the equator (stopping for a quick centre-of-the-earth photo op on the way) and on to Kampala, where our trip will wrap up late this afternoon. If you have time, why not hit the town and try the local food?

I've just finished the Mega European tour with Trip Leader Nicole Smith & Coach Driver Lloyd Spencer. I was incredibly nervous about going on a tour across Europe, but the planning and organisation by our Topdeck Crew made everything stress free. All the driving and walking tours were very informative, with Nicole being able to recall information off the top of her head about the history of all the Countries and Landmarks we visited. Our driver Lloyd took a very professional approach to his work and should be praised for all the effort he puts in. Both Nicole & Lloyd are enthusiastic individuals, who are always able to give great recommendations in every Country we stopped. This trip was absolutely fantastic and will be in my memories for life. A very special thanks to these two and topdeck for such an amazing trip.

Accomodations

Camping

On our Camping trips, you will be staying in easy-to-assemble, two-person dome tents provided by us. Please try to keep the tent clean, zipped up and remember that no smoking, candles or mosquito coils are permitted in the tent. To keep pests away, we also ask that you not eat or leave food in your tent. Ain’t nobody got time for bugs.

Please note: You must provide your own sleeping bag on Camping trips.

Campsites

Campsites you will stay in vary considerably. The general standard in East Africa is modest, although most have reasonable toilet and shower facilities. In southern Africa, the standard is usually somewhat higher. Occasionally we may camp out in the bush (with limited or no facilities).

In addition to meal assistance, there are other odd jobs you will be expected to undertake as part of any trip in Africa. We ask that you get involved in collecting firewood, lighting fires, filling water tanks, loading luggage, keeping the truck clean and even helping with the dishes. Lending a hand has never been so much fun, trust us.

Accommodated

Sometimes you just need your creature comforts. We totally get it. That’s why our Accommodated trips offer the same level of excitement and adventure as our Camping trips – except every day ends with a night in a comfortable bed in a range of safari cabins, tented camps and hostels.

Please note: Trips staying in Spitzkoppe and Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater will not be accommodated and two-person dome tents with a mattress and sleeping bag will be provided for these locations.

Age Notes

Max Age: 30

Trip ID#:

Meals Included:

Your included meals are detailed in the 'More Inclusions' section of this document. While on the road, you will be provided with three meals a day unless otherwise stated. African overland trips are participation based, which means you will be expected to do your bit for the team by helping with purchasing, cooking and cleaning-up duties. In some places, we will be able to go out for a meal. If you have any dietary requirements we will make every effort to cater to your specific needs, as long as you advise your travel agent or Topdeck Trip Consultant when you book. Please be aware that it may not be possible to cater for every single dietary requirement, but we will always try our best to arrange it.
