Short Description

Everybody welcome to the wild, wild west. It’s all about the California Love on this wicked West Coast Cruiser, as you start in the City of Angels and make your way through San Diego, Las Vegas and San Francisco, stopping to explore the awe-inspiring landscapes of the Grand Canyon and Zion and Yosemite National Parks. Farewell sunny San Fran and fly to the home of maple syrup, poutine and Ryan Gosling – that’s right, Canada is up next and you’re in for a treat. Sample delicious wines in Kelowna, soothe your bones in the Hot Springs in Banff, marvel at the icefields in Jasper and peruse a snow-free Whistler village. Talk about the perfect vaycay. You’re welcome.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are booked to travel on one of the following departures, the USA portion of your trip (Days 1 to 13) will operate as a small group adventure. The maximum number of passengers in your group will now be 13, and you will be travelling in a modern, air-conditioned van. Your knowledgeable local Trip Leader will also be driving you between destinations. Talk about multi-talented, right? You can look forward to all the regular Topdeck perks, with the added bonus of travelling in a tight-knit ‘Topdeck family’!

Not only will travelling in a small group enable you to bond with your fellow explorers, but you’ll also have the chance to experience a more personalised style of group travel. Think: less time gathering the gang, more time discovering some pretty epic places. It’s totally hassle-free. Plus, with a smaller crew you can enjoy a more flexible holiday, filled with authentic experiences and plenty of free time to do your own thing. In fact, it’s these ‘small group benefits’ that have been a hit with many passengers in the past.

Small ship cruises usually have a max passenger count of 500. The primary purpose of these trips is to spend time off the vessel in local ports (e.g. Mediterranean) or experiencing nature (e.g Galapagos or Antarctica). Cabins can vary from budget to luxury.

Itinerary

Day 1

Know much about San Diego besides Ron Burgundy? Nope? That's okay. With a coastline position that's close enough to high-five Mexico, it's all about how many fish tacos you can consume in the next few hours. Get acquainted on our city tour with beaches, San Diego Harbor and Downtown, oh my! Surfers froth over San Diego for its variety of breaks within (almost) paddling distance. Look out for pros like Rob Machado in the line-up. Total beginner? Try La Jolla Shores. Tonight, hit up Gaslamp Quarter or seek out rooftop bars for cocktails with a view.

Included today:
-Driving tour of San Diego

Meals:
-Dinner

Optional activities:
-Nightlife tour of San Diego

Day 2

We suggest you keep today classy with a ride on a historic trolley, a jaunt through the Spanish-style Balboa Park and a visit to San Diego Zoo (one word: pandas). Hone your craft beer vocab with a self-guided tour through over 80 breweries and brewpubs in "America's Craft Beer Capital". Or just get in on the sun and surf action along the 70 miles (112 km) of beaches.

Meals:
-Breakfast

Optional activities:
-Visit the USS Midway Museum
-Visit the famed San Diego Zoo
-Baseball (seasonal)

Day 3

Joshua trees are like a mutant cactus-cross-pandanus and you'll only spot them in Southwest USA. Drive through the tree-dotted landscape of the Mojave desert to Prescott (home of the world's oldest rodeo), where cowboy hats are part of the locals' uniform and Whiskey Row is the place to be. Soak up some of the lingering history from the notorious strip of gun-slinging saloons that once stood there.

Meals:
-Breakfast

Day 4

On our way to that big hole in the ground, we make a stop in Arizona's 'little Hollywood', Sedona - a spiritual mecca in the desert (and set of many a John Wayne film). Say a few 'oms' and find some zen amongst the red sandstone on the optional Jeep tour before we travel towards the Grand Canyon.

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Dinner

Optional activities:
-Jeep tour in Sedona

Day 5

Ready to 'go big or go home'? You've seen pictures, but nothing can prepare you for the humility that comes with standing on the precipice of something so mighty. With a day at the Grand Canyon you can see billions of years of rock history from every angle including a 360 degree panorama if you take the chopper.

Included today:
-Day trip to Grand Canyon National Park

Meals:
-Breakfast

Optional activities:
-Heli-tour over the Grand Canyon

Day 6

Urban hippies rejoice! A stop at the Cameron Native American Trading Post will soothe twitching shopping withdrawals with drums and silver jewellery. Continue the journey with stops at Horseshoe Bend on the Colorado River and Glen Canyon Dam - one of the largest dams in the United States, and the reason for Lake Powell's existence.

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Dinner

Day 7

Zion means the kingdom of heaven - once you arrive, you'll see why. Millions-year-old sweeping sandstone canyons, iridescent waterfalls and impressive landscapes make this a hiker and photographer's utopia. Strap on your boots and walk along the canyon floor or heed the challenge up to Angel's Landing. Then we'll make like a condor and soar across the desert to a little town called Las Vegas. Tonight: a nightclub on wheels (and pockets full of casino chips?).

Included today:
-Entry to Zion National Park
-Las Vegas party bus

Meals:
-Breakfast

Optional activities:
-VIP club entry

Day 8

Gamble your time in Vegas away on the roulette of activities available at your doorstep: bet high with indoor skydiving, put everything on black or take your winnings straight to the skies with a helicopter flight. Whichever way you choose, you're winning.

Optional activities:
-Heli-tour over the Las Vegas Strip
-Entry to the High Roller Observation Wheel
-Shooting range experience

Day 9

G-rated Vegas sounds like an oxymoron, but there's plenty of family-friendly options from indoor skydiving to rollercoasters atop needlepoint buildings. Circle the globe without leaving The Strip (Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, Pyramids of Giza). Today, Vegas is your oyster, and there's a good chance it will be battered and deep fried.

Optional activities:
-Heli-tour over the Las Vegas Strip

Day 10

Lost track of time last night? Swap stories of your Vegas antics as we drive from the desert to the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and our gateway to Yosemite National Park.
Meals:
-Dinner

Day 11

There's not enough flowery adjectives to describe the beauty of Yosemite Valley. It doesn't have honey badgers, but it does have bears, coyotes and golden eagles that are badass in their own right. Hike, ride or take the free shuttle to explore the real-world equivalent of Narnia.

Included today:
-Entry to Yosemite National Park

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Dinner

Day 12

The colour orange is associated with extroverts and the unconventional - so apt for San Fran. Add a bit of 'International Orange' to your life when we tick off SF's best with Fisherman's Wharf, North Beach, Chinatown, the Painted Ladies and a walk on the Golden Gate Bridge.

Included today:
-Driving tour of San Francisco

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Dinner

Day 13

Today, you're free to roam. Trolley rides, honking sea lions at Pier 39 and pitting yourself against the incline of Lombard Street would be our picks.

NOTE: If you want a jail pass to visit Alcatraz in San Francisco, make sure you book BEFORE you begin the trip.

Optional activities:
-Chinatown tour
-Sunset catamaran cruise

Day 14

Today, we turn our backs on SF and look forward to once of the most impressive countries in the world, Canada. Pack your bags, we're flying up, up and away.

Day 15

Kelowna is known for two things - golf and grapes. Say hello to your new Topdeck group as we take the (pretty epic) scenic drive through Fraser Valley with views of the Coast Mountains, over the Coquihalla Pass and into the Okanagan Valley. Get to know the crew over dinner tonight.
Included today:
-Wine tasting in Kelowna
Meals:
-Dinner

Day 16

If the von Trapps were Canadian, and travelled by bus, today would be like a scene out of The Sound of Music. Glacier National Park has the quintessential mountain peaks and lush valleys of Maria's Alps, and we haven't even reached the Rockies yet. Stop at Rogers Pass National and take in the impressive scenery. Dinner's with the crew tonight.

Included today:
-Entry to Mt Revelstoke & Glacier National Park

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Dinner

Day 17

It's Louise vs Moraine in today's episode of Lake's Got Talent - you be the judge as we cross through Kicking Horse Pass and the Continental Divide into Banff, Alberta. If you run out of FOMO-inducing hashtags, lower your phone and raise your pulse with optional white-water rafting on Kicking Horse River.

Included today:
-Visit Lake Louise
-Entry to Banff & Yoho National Park

Optional activities:
-Whitewater rafting on the Kicking Horse River

Day 18

Banff is National Geographic on steroids - all snow-capped peaks and sky-mirroring lakes. Check out the staggeringly-beautiful mountains, or simply kick back and chill out at the Banff Upper Hot Springs.

Included today:
-Entry to hot springs

Meals:
-Breakfast

Day 19

Today's theme? Ice, ice baby! First, the world's most scenic highway - the Icefields Parkway. Second, the Columbia Icefield - the largest ice cap south of the Arctic Circle. Third, a 'Sno Coach' tour of the Athabasca Glacier. Defrost in Jasper tonight.

Included today:
-Snowcoach tour of Athabasca Glacier
-Entry to Jasper National Park entry

Meals:
-Breakfast

Optional activities:
-Heli-tour over Columbia Icefield

Day 20

Jasper's free day offerings are endless - the sky tram, museums, Spirit Island boat tour, horseback riding, canoeing, rock climbing and fishing. Say hello to the local wildlife of wolves and coyotes and bears, oh my!

Meals:
-Breakfast

Optional activities:
-Bike hire

Day 21

At over 12,000 feet (almost 4000 metres) Mount Robson is the Rockies' highest peak - yep, size matters (sorry, gents). You'll have just enough time to take a selfie with a mountain goat statue and spot the moose near Moose Lake before we rendezvous with Kamloops.

Meals:
-Breakfast
-Dinner

Day 22

Summer is the new winter in Whistler, so named for the whistling hoary marmot that lives here. It's the holy grail of ski resorts, but you'll be surprised at how much more there is to do when the snow melts. Pass through the small towns and indigenous communities of British Columbia and rendezvous with the crew for a low-down of today over dinner.

Included today:
-Walking tour of Whistler

Meals:
-Dinner

Optional activities:
-Nightlife tour of Whistler

Day 23

Make your travel insurance work hard for you with a spot of mountain biking, ziplining, or work on your tan at the beach (seriously) with the other off-season ski bunnies.

Optional activities:
-Bike hire
-Ziplining in Whistler

Day 24

On the second day, Whistler created five lakes to dip your toe in, a gondola lift to enjoy the view from, countless spas to relieve your stress (four-handed massage, anyone?) and enough cafes, boutiques and galleries to max your credit card. Have fun, the day is yours to explore.

Optional activities:
-Bike hire
-Ziplining in Whistler

Day 25

Passing Brandywine and Shannon Falls, we'll wrap up our trip along the scenic Sea to Sky Highway to
Vancity - and throw in a drive by through Stanley Park once we arrive. Cue sad faces and goodbyes or head straight to one of the 40-plus brew houses in this craft-beer capital. There's always Facebook, and next year.

Gallop on into Calgary - you're here for one thing, and that is the Calgary Stampede. Its massive following stemmed from the farming exhibitions once presented here, as it grew into an annual rodeo event.

Included today:
-Entry to Yoho National Park
-Driving tour of Calgary

Day 18

A free day in Cowtown (nicknamed due to the western influence still present here) means one thing: the Calgary Stampede. So much more than a rodeo, the local extravaganza boasts daily concerts, mouth watering food stalls, acrobatics, fireworks and a rollicking good vibe. Get lost at the fairgrounds of the “greatest outdoor show on earth” (seriously) as you take in the flurry of activities, and don't forget to eat your weight in maple-flavoured treats as you soak up the festival feels.

When you're not amongst the action, hit the Heritage Park Historical Village for an in-depth history exhibit spanning back to the 1860s, or check out Canada Olympic Park and Telus Spark. Calgary's bustling metropolis and cowboy swagger is guaranteed to impress.

Amazing staff who are very friendly and also extremely knowledgeable. My trip was amazing and I enjoyed every minute of it. I did the Spirit of Europe last year and couldn’t recommend Topdeck enough.

I jumped on this tour with very little notice and planning, and I was thoroughly impressed. Our Topdeck trip leader was very knowledgeable, fun, and adjusted the trip to the group (34 people). The meals provided were delicious, and they worked hard to cater to dietary needs. Accommodations were good, typically with 2-6 people in a hostel room. Keep in mind they are hostels, not hotels (bring your own towel).

I loved the itinerary, as it highlighted the must-see places and had variety (ex. Paris, Rome vs. Switzerland). The optionals in each city were all wonderful. However, many were not presented in the Topdeck literature online and were not introduced on the trip more than a day in advance. All are paid for in cash (Euros). Because of how the optionals were presented, it was a bit harder to budget. I would recommend inquiring more about the optionals when booking and at the beginning of your tour via your trip leader. Don't feel pressured to do all of them and remember to keep your own interests in mind.

The solo travelers easily found others with similar interests to explore with. For many on this trip, drinking and going out to bars/clubs was a major component (as alcohol is often cheaper than water). Because of the shortness of this tour along with all the destinations, prepare for lots of driving and to make the most of the time you have in each city.

This trip provided am amazing sampling of Western Europe and opened my eyes to cultures and history I was unfamiliar with. Overall, I would highly recommend this itinerary and touring company, as it provided a good balance between budget and experiences.

P.S. Stay flexible with plans, but some of the popular sights need more pre-planning than expected, like the Eiffel Tower and the Anne Frank House (Amsterdam).

Overall amazing value. Food, particularly by Topdeck staff, excellent. Spontaneous/flexible; be prepared to pay for lots of extra excursions, on and off your itinerary, in cash.

Food was excellent. Accomodations were better than expected: hostels, but usually with in-suite bathrooms and always only with other members of your tour of the same gender. Don't try to overplan; trip is quite spontaneous and flexible and you won't know much about the schedule/optionals for each city more than a day or so in advance. Optionals will be plentiful and paid in cash. Only do those that are right for you, even if your trip leader really encourages them and most other people are going. These trips are great for solo travelers, but make sure you find people interested in the same things as you...it will probably be easy to find groups to go to bars and clubs with in the evenings, but harder to find people who prefer other evening plans. Driver was excellent and bus was very comfortable and clean, but be prepared to spend a lot of time on it as there is no driving at night. Trip leader extremely knowledgeable, experienced, and helpful. Overall, excellent value and a trip with plenty of time to see the bucket list highlights in each city.

Did Uluru discovery in Australia and Grand Kiwi in NZ back in November and it was the most amazing experience ever! Awesome guide and driver. Well organized and took great care of us!
Only one bad hostel accommodation wise, but other than that it was amazing.
It was so nice not having to worry about accommodations, transportation, and most meals when we got there! On the days it wasn’t included, the guide/driver would tell us what’s in the area!
For sure will be doing another topdeck tour in the future!

My partner and I just completed the 20 day Discover Winter tour and it was absolutely outstanding! What really made the trip though was the Trip Leader, Alex, and the driver, Deyan. They were both extremely knowledgeable people and explained everything we needed to know to enjoy every place we went to. I highly recommend this tour and hope that everybody else has the opportunity to meet Alex and Deyan.

Accomodations

We have endeavoured to select a combination of good quality hotels that reflect the character of the local area and are as centrally located as possible, all the while striving to keep the cost affordable. Standards and ratings may however differ to what you are accustomed to in your own country.

The 'More Inclusions' section of this document details what type of accommodation is used for our overnight stops.

If you are a solo traveller, you will always be sharing a room with someone of the same sex. If you are travelling as a couple and would prefer to have a double bed, please officially request a double room with your travel agent or Topdeck trip consultant. We never presume that two people travelling together are a couple, even if you share the same surname, unless informed otherwise.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have booked pre or post trip accommodation, please note that most hotels in North America require you to present a credit card at check-in, even if your accommodation is pre-paid. The hotel will either place a temporary hold on a set amount (called a pre-authorisation) or will make a manual swipe of the card. This is done to cover incidentals, for example you consume something from the mini-bar, or you damage the hotel room. Your card will NOT actually be charged unless you use the mini-bar, etc. Please ask the hotel front desk clerk for a further explanation when checking in if you are unsure about why they need the card. Again, this is standard procedure at most hotels and is typically not something you need to be concerned about.

Meals Included:

Your included meals are detailed in the 'More Inclusions' section of this document.
Please note that drinks are not included with meals, except at breakfast where coffee, tea and/or juice may be included. If you wish to purchase drinks at dinner you may do so at your own expense.

If you have any dietary requirements we will make every effort to cater to your specific needs as long as you advise your travel agent or Topdeck Trip Consultant when you book. But please be aware that although we will do everything in our power to arrange it, we cannot guarantee that every restaurant we use will be able to cater to all dietary needs. We cannot cater for tastes or dislikes, as most of our included evening meals feature a set menu.
