Its main gate faces Chandni Chowk the bustling and colourful market of the old city with its twisting lanes and crowded bazaars. It was once the commercial centre of Delhi in times gone by. See it come alive in the morning as the days trading begins. Take a peek through a portico and you may see a man getting shaved, silver being weighed, or any other conceivable form of intense commerce. Visit Jama Masjid, one of the largest mosques in India, built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan between 1644 and 1656 at a cost of 1 million rupees. Return to your hotel and enjoy some free time this afternoon to relax or explore further.

One of these children will be your guide as they take you through their shelters and tell their life-stories. Later walk through the bazaar of Paharganj and a vegetable market where the locals do their daily shopping. After lunch in a local restaurant continue your City Tour with a visit to New Delhi which was designed and built by the British starting in the 1920's. It took 20 years to complete this immense undertaking only to have the British pack up and relinquish the subcontinent in 1947. It is a city of wide boulevards impressive Government buildings, green parks and gardens. Visit two monuments from Delhi's past - Humayun's Tomb and Qutub Minar, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. Later drive along the ceremonial avenue, Rajpath, past the imposing India Gate and Parliament House. Return to your hotel for a relaxing evening.

Day 4 DELHI – AGRA

This morning after breakfast travel to Agra which in the 16th and 17th centuries was the capital of the grand Mughal Empire. In the afternoon visit the impressive Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and walk through the chambers of this royal residence. The fort can be more accurately described as a walled palatial city and during Mughal times housed the state treasury and mint. On the drive through the city, witness the local life and the hustle and bustle of everyday India. Return to your hotel for dinner and your overnight stay. Hotel Double Tree by Hilton

Day 5 AGRA – JAIPUR (3 NIGHTS)

The traditional prints and designs differ from area to area and can determine village, profession or even marital status. Blue Pottery is also synonymous with Jaipur and it is its vibrant colours of blues and greens which really sets it apart from other pottery in the country. The Shiv Niwas and Fateh Prakash Palaces are luxury hotels today and the Shambhu Niwas Palace houses the private residences of the royal family. Visit the City Palace which is the oldest part of the complex dating back to the 16th century and has been converted into a museum. It houses a huge collection of rare miniature paintings and beautiful decorative motives made with mirrors and coloured glass. Later wander through the markets and bazaars to get a feel for the city and perhaps take the opportunity to purchase a sari. Visit the Jagdish Temple built in 1651, ornamented with excellent carvings and a bronze figure of the Garuda. Proceed to the Garden of the Maids of the Honour constructed in the early 18th century which was used as a venue for royal parties. After lunch in a local restaurant, enjoy some free time or take part in an Optional Experience.

This was the first time we had taken a group road tour and I would have to say that it exceeded my expectations. Our guide Danilo was great, it is a difficult job managing people on this type of trip. Everything from the excursion to the dinners where completely organized and well done. We look forward to another trip with Trafalgar in the future. I would without a doubt definitely recommend this trip, it is a little fast pace but Danilo, made sure that we had options if there were needed.

The tour guide Hubert was wonderful, very detailed oriented and organized. And had such an extensive knowledge of all the cities and locations we went to. Truly excellent!

Personalized care and helpfulness was definitely offered throughout, very nice touch to the trip.

Overall a great trip, but some considerations below:

The hotel in Beijing – Novotel Peace and the hotel in Chengdu – Crowne Plaza were way below standard – maybe a rating of 2 stars. They were dirty, dark, stained and hot without air circulating in the rooms. After extensive days with waking up early and returning late, you just want to rest in a clean environment with cool air. I would never stay hotels like these.

This trip is not for people who cannot handle extensive walking and climbing. Trafalgar lists this as from 5 to 99 years old. Not possible. There were days we did 10 miles of walking, just a caution for anyone considering. We had someone in our tour that was 82 years old and we all took turns taking care of him.

Some aspects of the itinerary could be different, but think that is all based on personal preference; however my fellow travelers did feel the same way. The cruise down the Yangtze River was just ‘ok’, time could have been spent better elsewhere. Like Xian, truly amazing city but too short a time.

NOTE: Some were charged single supplement, others were not ... I paid for the single supplement and was none too happy about that!

Also note that you need to budget for the optional tours that are not included.

I've never had a travel group cancel a trip before. Trafalgar canceled my honeymoon we booked ages in advance my honeymoon. They didn't even have the decency to call. They sent an email as if this wasn't a stressful enough time for planning. As far as we can tell from their non-direct answers they canceled it due to underbooking. Their solution was to just change to a different trip. I'm not sure if they realize how trip planning or buying plane tickets work. we'll never book with them again.

I lost all trust in all tour companies after Trafalgar sent us with a known sex offender on a 3 week tour. He is now jailed. I have contacted Trafalgar to at least get an apology, instead I received dismissive replies and now, radio silence. they had scrubbed this guide' social media to distance themselves AND they continue to manage his Facebook profile, changing his profile picture to pretend all is well. This is disgusting. We place our trust in tour companies mostly to be safe at destination. Think twice before using Trafalgar, they don't much care who works for them: https://www.theargus.co.uk/news/16094579.Man_jailed_after_destroying_computer_on_which_he_watched_dog_porn/
