Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Buenos Aires (2 Nights)

It's time to Tango your way through beautiful Buenos Aires, your launchpad for an in-depth exploration through the other-worldly solitary, southern frontiers of Patagonia. On arrival at the airport, you will be met by a local host and taken to your hotel. Get settled into your room in preparation for an epic adventure, or set out and explore the grand boulevards and quaint barrios of Argentina's vibrant capital city. At 6 p.m., join your Travel Director and fellow expeditioners for a Welcome Reception. Welcome Reception

Day 2: Buenos Aires Sightseeing

Walk in the footsteps of the porteños on your exploration of the exquisite sights of the "Paris of South America". Wind your way through the city past the grand, pink Casa Rosada, Metropolitan Cathedral, bold and bright La Boca and the cobblestone streets of grand San Telmo. Stare in awe at the famous Teatro Colon and pay homage to Eva (Evita) Peron in the final resting place of Buenos Aires' most noteworthy residents, the elegant Recoleta Cemetery. Tonight, join your Travel Director and fellow travellers for an exclusive Be My Guest dinner in Palermo Soho. You will be welcomed by a local family who are long-time residents of this trendy neighbourhood. Be delighted, as they wine and dine you with homemade family recipes in the kitchen, discover the secrets of kneading bread and watch as your hosts demonstrate the art of the Tango. Full Breakfast, Be My Guest Dining

Day 3: Buenos Aires - Tierra del Fuego National Park - Ushuaia (2 Nights)

An expedition through the extraordinary landscapes of Patagonia begins today as you fly to the world's southernmost city, Ushuaia. Upon arrival, embark on an exploration of the dramatic landscapes of Tierra del Fuego National Park with a Local Specialist, delving into the depths of its beautiful scenery with its waterfalls, glaciers, forests and mountains. Take in the wildlife that inhabit this spectacular environment like red foxes, woodpeckers, steamer ducks, condors, eagles and beavers. Within the park, come face to face with the biological richness of Tierra del Fuego Island and its incredible scenic beauty, views over the Beagle Channel at Ensenada Bay, the glacial waters of Roca Lake and the deep Bay of Lapataia Bay. This evening dinner is served at your hotel on the Beagle Channel. Continental Breakfast, Dinner

Day 4: Ushuaia

Enjoy the views this morning and linger over breakfast. Explore the town of Ushuaia or perhaps choose an exciting optional adventure. Board your vessel and cruise the Beagle Channel focusing on the scenic archipelago, wildlife and history. Learn about the great shipwrecks of the region as well as the first explorers who arrived from Europe. Or take a longer excursion that includes colonies of sea lions and elegant Magellanic penguins. Late afternoon, join a Local Specialist and your fellow travellers for a tour of Ushuaia including an early evening visit to the Museo Maritimo y Del Presidio, home to the Maritime, Prison, Antarctic and Marine Art Museum. Full Breakfast

Day 5: Ushuaia - El Calafate (2 Nights)

Leave the "end of the world" and fly to the quaint town of El Calafate on the shores of Lake Argentino, the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park with its spectacular Perito Moreno Glacier. An otherworldly landscape surrounds you, one of massive glaciers, jagged landscapes of interconnected fjords and mountainside glacial lakes which you will have a rare opportunity to explore over the next few days. Full Breakfast, Dinner

Day 6: Los Glaciares National Park Excursion

The day is dedicated to a deep exploration of the striking Los Glaciares National Park, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its exceptional natural beauty. Touring with a Local Specialist, you'll come face-to-face with its arctic blue and white glaciers that are fed by the massive South Patagonian Ice Field, milky coloured glacial lakes and towering snowcapped peaks. Discover the magnificent Perito Moreno Glacier, which towers above the icy waters of Lake Argentino. You could perhaps witness massive igloo icebergs plunging into the lake with thunderous force. Experience the rugged solitude of the windswept steppe and the quiet southern beach forests before heading back to El Calafate for an evening spent at leisure. Full Breakfast

Day 7: El Calafate - Torres del Paine National Park (2 Nights)

Travel this morning from El Calafate along the Patagonian Steppes giving way to the veritable granite spires of Paine which are the main features of this extraordinary National Park that has been declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Join a Local Specialist to delve behind the scenes of Torres del Paine National Park's extraordinary natural frontier land. Wander past cascading waterfalls, roaring creeks, shimmering lakes and jagged mountain spires. Your afternoon in the park will feature the Torres towers seen from the eastern region. Observe cyanobacteria with stromatolites formations at Laguan Amarga before stopping at Blue Lagoon. Lady Florence Dixie, the intrepid Victorian-era British traveller and author, first spotted the Torres del Paine peaks, naming them "Cleopatra's Needles" in her 1880 book, Across Patagonia. Dinner with wine awaits this evening at your hotel. Full Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner with wine

Day 8: Torres Del Paine National Park Sightseeing

Continue your in-depth exploration of Torres Del Paine, venturing deep into the heart of the park with a Local Specialist. View stunning landscapes from scenic outlooks, embark on short hikes to see natural landmarks up close and enjoy a lake cruise to Grey Glacier dodging icebergs calved by the glacier. Stops along the way include Puente Negro (Black Bridge) crossing the Paine River, Nordenskjöld Lookout, Sarmiento Lookout, Lake Pehoé and Salto Grande waterfall. After enjoying an alfresco gourmet box lunch, choose to hike along the southern shore of Lago Grey until a point where you can gaze down at the icebergs that have plunged in to the lake or embark on a narrated Catamaran boat trip across the length of the lake to imposing Grey Glacier, which tumbles down from the massive Southern Patagonia Ice Field. This evening is yours to relax and enjoy dinner with wine served at the hotel. Full Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner with wine

Day 9: Torres Del Paine – Puerto Natales (2 Nights)

Follow your Local Specialist on the famous "W" Trail that stretches from the picturesque northern shores of Lake Nordenskjöld, named after a Scandinavian explorer who probed much of the region in the early 20th century, to the snowcapped Monte Almirante Nieto that anchors the southeastern extreme of the Paine Massif, past pebbled beaches, rugged steppe landscapes and Andes shrublands. After lunch, visit the Milodon Cave, an impressive cave of 660 feet (201 metres) where evidence of a giant prehistoric ground sloth, now known as a Mylodon, was found by German Explorer Hermann Eberhard. There is also evidence of prehistoric human habitation within Cueva del Milodón, dating back as early as 6000 BC. Your base for the next two nights is the colourful fishing town of Pueto Natales on the Seno Ùltima Esperanza, set against the backdrop of Patagonian steppes leading up to snowcapped mountains in the distance. Full Breakfast, Lunch

Day 10: Puerto Natales, Balmaceda and Serrano Glaciers Excursion

Today's exploration takes you by boat up the Rio Serrano, passing the Southern Icefield (Campo de Hielo Sur) toward the icy turquoise sheets of the Serrano Glacier. Take some time with a Local Specialist to explore the impressive glacier with a hike through unspoiled, cool rainforest landscapes to Seno Ultima Esperanza ("Fjord of the Last Hope") where you will see the rest of the Southern Patagonian Icefield, the incomparable Bernardo O'Higgins National Park, where you'll enjoy lunch. Continue through the fjord by boat with views of the Balmaceda Glacier and Serrano Glaciers in the background. This evening, join your Travel Director and new friends for a Farewell Dinner and toast to an unforgettable expedition to the ends of the earth. Full Breakfast, Lunch, Farewell Dinner

Day 11: Puerto Natales – Punta Arenas - Depart Santiago

Spend time this morning in the peninsula town of Punta Arenas, a city famous for its European style, rugged charm and status as a gateway to the Antarctic due to its location on the Straits of Magellan. This afternoon, board your flight to the Santiago International Airport, where your Patagonian adventure ends or extend your stay in Santiago at the InterContinental Hotel. Full Breakfast

This was the first time we had taken a group road tour and I would have to say that it exceeded my expectations. Our guide Danilo was great, it is a difficult job managing people on this type of trip. Everything from the excursion to the dinners where completely organized and well done. We look forward to another trip with Trafalgar in the future. I would without a doubt definitely recommend this trip, it is a little fast pace but Danilo, made sure that we had options if there were needed.

The tour guide Hubert was wonderful, very detailed oriented and organized. And had such an extensive knowledge of all the cities and locations we went to. Truly excellent!

Personalized care and helpfulness was definitely offered throughout, very nice touch to the trip.

Overall a great trip, but some considerations below:

The hotel in Beijing – Novotel Peace and the hotel in Chengdu – Crowne Plaza were way below standard – maybe a rating of 2 stars. They were dirty, dark, stained and hot without air circulating in the rooms. After extensive days with waking up early and returning late, you just want to rest in a clean environment with cool air. I would never stay hotels like these.

This trip is not for people who cannot handle extensive walking and climbing. Trafalgar lists this as from 5 to 99 years old. Not possible. There were days we did 10 miles of walking, just a caution for anyone considering. We had someone in our tour that was 82 years old and we all took turns taking care of him.

Some aspects of the itinerary could be different, but think that is all based on personal preference; however my fellow travelers did feel the same way. The cruise down the Yangtze River was just ‘ok’, time could have been spent better elsewhere. Like Xian, truly amazing city but too short a time.

NOTE: Some were charged single supplement, others were not ... I paid for the single supplement and was none too happy about that!

Also note that you need to budget for the optional tours that are not included.

I've never had a travel group cancel a trip before. Trafalgar canceled my honeymoon we booked ages in advance my honeymoon. They didn't even have the decency to call. They sent an email as if this wasn't a stressful enough time for planning. As far as we can tell from their non-direct answers they canceled it due to underbooking. Their solution was to just change to a different trip. I'm not sure if they realize how trip planning or buying plane tickets work. we'll never book with them again.

I lost all trust in all tour companies after Trafalgar sent us with a known sex offender on a 3 week tour. He is now jailed. I have contacted Trafalgar to at least get an apology, instead I received dismissive replies and now, radio silence. they had scrubbed this guide' social media to distance themselves AND they continue to manage his Facebook profile, changing his profile picture to pretend all is well. This is disgusting. We place our trust in tour companies mostly to be safe at destination. Think twice before using Trafalgar, they don't much care who works for them: https://www.theargus.co.uk/news/16094579.Man_jailed_after_destroying_computer_on_which_he_watched_dog_porn/
