To most westerners “outer” Mongolia connotes “the ends of the earth.” It stirs up visions of camels plodding through the endless sands of the Gobi Desert, and the warlord Genghis Khan galloping across the steppes with his hordes. Brutal as he may have been, the great Khan succeeded in uniting warring clans and stamping out feuds, and went on to create the largest contiguous empire the world has ever known. Flash forward to today’s Mongolia where change is a gentler process. There has been a transition to a parliamentary democracy, the country has opened up to the world, and the economy is booming.

Itinerary

Day 1 & 2: Beijing, China

Accommodation: St. Regis Beijing

Upon arrival you are escorted to your luxury hotel. This evening join your Travcoa Travel Director and fellow travelers for a welcome cocktail party and dinner.

Northwest of Beijing we come upon the tombs of thirteen ancient emperors via the Avenue of the Animals—amazing sculptures of lions, horses, elephants, and camels! Our visit to a mausoleum and tour of the museum brings the Ming Dynasty to life. Next, we travel to Badaling to stand atop the Great Wall and observe its route as it snakes across the landscape. Known to the Chinese as the “Long Wall of Ten Thousand Li”, we could never walk the entire length of this 12,000-mile-long UNESCO World Heritage

Day 3: Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

Accommodation: Best Western Premier Tuushin Hotel

We fly to Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia to begin an incomparable adventure in this remote corner of the world. The city, high above sea level, is the cultural and business center of the country and a railway hub connecting to the Trans- Siberian Railway. Today we visit the War Memorial at Zaisan Hill, a towering landmark that lies at the front of the city. Dedicated to WWII Victory Day, its design is influenced by the stark Soviet style of the day. The hill offers some of the best views of the city and surrounding nature.

Day 4: Gorkhi-Terelj National Park

Today we venture through a landscape so different from anything we’ve ever known. The National Park with its alpine setting and strange rock formations is as beautiful as it is tranquil. We join the ever-smiling nomads for a hands-on demonstration of ger construction. We learn just how amazing and portable these habitations are and we learn to like them even more after spending an unforgettable night in our own cozy Mongolian ger tent. **Please Note: Only shared bathroom/shower facilities are available.**

Day 5 & 6: The Naadam Festival

Accommodation: Best Western Premier Tuushin Hotel

We head to the Natural History Museum for an overview of Mongolia from the Stone Age to modern times. A private visit to the exotic Choijin Lama Temple Museum adds a special touch. But what comes next is a true once-in-a-lifetime experience. Our trip is planned to coincide with a yearly celebration—the Naadam Festival which dates back to the time of Genghis Khan. The lively opening ceremony and the “three manly sports” of wrestling, archery, and horseracing plus a colorful concert, with dancing, unique instruments, and the haunting artistry of “double singing” leaves us with lasting images of Mongolian strength, courage and artistic spirit.

Day 7 & 8: Gobi Desert & Flaming Cliffs

Accommodation: Three Camel Lodge

Today, we visit the unexpectedly green Yol Valley in the Gobi Desert, and take an easy horseback ride for a thrilling way to experience the Gobi steppes. The area around Flaming Cliffs has come to be known as the “cemetery of dinosaurs” and we are thrilled to discover towering sand dunes, dramatic canyons and cliffs hiding ancient fossils. **Please Note: Only shared bathroom/shower facilities are available.**

Day 9: Ulaanbaatar

Accommodation: Best Western Premier Tuushin Hotel

Back in Ulaanbaatar, we have a full day to peer inside the heart and soul of the city. First we tour the magnificent Winter Palace Museum and its amazing artifacts—from solid gold boots (a gift from a Russian czar) to a ger lined with the skins of 150 snow leopards.

Day 10 & 11: Beijing, China & Depart for Home

Accommodation: St. Regis Beijing, Beijing

We return to Beijing to once again thrill to a truly remarkable city—it stirs the imagination with its ancient traditions and bustling modern-day ambition. And our day is planned to let us explore on our own (with some last minute souvenir-shopping in mind) or to just relax at our hotel. In the evening, we gather with our Travcoa Travel Director and fellow travelers for a farewell cocktail party and dinner. On Day 11 you will be transferred to the airport for your flight home or on to your next destination.
