Itinerary

Day 1: Vancouver & Sandspit, Canada

Meals: Dinner

Accommodation: Haida House at Tllaal, Haida Gwaii

Upon arrival in Vancouver you will transfer to your flight to Sandspit, where you will be escorted to your lodge. The lodge’s Cultural Concierge will acquaint you with the property and its facilities, as well as review your activities for the next four days.

The scenery of Haida Gwaii is diverse and spectacular, and offers remnants of a time before human arrival. The rugged shorelines, stands of vast virgin forest, lush vegetation and mile upon mile of peaceful scenery allow one to easily find solitude within natural surroundings. Wildlife viewing includes migratory whales and sea birds, bald eagles, giant ravens and the largest species of black bear.

Relax in your comfortable lodge room, and then enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail on the river-view patio. Enjoy your first dinner at the Haida House – an ever-changing table d’hôtel menu with a focus on regional products and the freshest ingredients from the land and sea.

Day 2: South Graham Island

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Haida House at Tllaal, Haida Gwaii

Today is a day of cultural exploration around South Graham Island, the largest island in the Haida Gwaii archipelago. Witness firsthand the powerful and dynamic relationship between the land, the sea, and the living culture of the Haida people, where art, culture and heritage sites exist in the same natural settings where the people have lived for thousands of years.

Your sightseeing begins with a morning drive to Skidegate. Stop en route for photos at Jungle Beach and Balance Rock, which was left behind by glacial action. Along the shores of Rooney Bay, stop at a few home-based Haida studios and meet renowned carvers, painters and jewelry makers.

Enjoy a guided tour of the Haida Heritage Centre at Kay Llnagaay, an award-winning cultural attraction. The center houses the Haida Gwaii Museum, Canoe House, Bill Reid Teaching Centre, the Carving House, a gift shop and a café. View the museum’s vast collection of Haida art and technology, fossil and natural history specimens, and watch a Haida Dance Performance.

You will also view argillite carvings, pioneer artifacts, historic photographs, and ancient totem poles from Tanu and Skedans, dating back to 1878. In visiting the Haida Heritage Centre you are helping to contribute to the continuation of the Haida Nation’s way of life, and sharing in the responsibility of protecting one of the world’s great cultures.

After your tour, enjoy a casual lunch at Kay Kitchen Café at the Haida Heritage Centre.

Weather permitting, proceed to the museum’s beach and embark on a guided paddle around the bay in a traditional Haida canoe. Listen to stories about the Haida Nation and learn about the importance of the canoe to their culture.

The day culminates with a traditional Haida dinner in the waterfront home of a Haida chef, Roberta Olsen, certain to be a cultural highlight of your Haida Gwaii experience.

Back at the Haida House spend the remainder of the evening on the patio overlooking the shores of the magical Tlell River and enjoying the daylight sky well past 11:00 p.m.

Day 3: Moresby Island

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Haida House at Tllaal, Haida Gwaii

Early this morning, take the ferry to Sandspit on Moresby Island and then travel by 4X4 vehicle to Moresby Camp for an adventure by Zodiac boat. Head out to the waters of Hecate Strait, passing through narrows and inlets, high rocky cliffs and shorelines peppered with wildlife.

At Cumshewa Inlet, arrive at Skedans, an ancient Haida village built on a small peninsula. Enjoy a late morning walking tour of Skedans as a Haida Watchman leads you on a path that winds its way through the old village. Wander through the site viewing long houses from the mid-1800s to appreciate the story-telling artistry of the totem poles, now in varying stages of decay. Enjoy a picnic lunch in this beautiful setting.

Late afternoon, retrace your steps back to your accommodations

Day 4: Old Massett & Port Clements

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Haida House at Tllaal, Haida Gwaii

This morning, drive to the Haida village of Old Massett on the eastern shore of Masset Inlet. Watch for eagles and ravens that can easily be seen perching on the shoreline trees.

Built on the site of three ancient Haida towns, today Old Massett is the administrative seat of the Council of the Haida Nation and is home to about 600 Haida. Enjoy a tour of the large collection of totem poles crafted by some well-known native carvers, meet a Master Carver, and have tea with a world renowned Haida painter.

After lunch, enjoy a hike up Tow Hill to view the dramatic vistas of North and East Beaches where, on a clear day, one can see the Alaska Mountain Range. Nearby, Blow Hole is quite spectacular and the expansive Agate Beach is a beachcomber’s paradise: treasures can be found all along the shore – Japanese glass fishing floats, sperm whale teeth, shells, sand dollars, and agate gemstones.

Next, drive south to the logging and fishing village of Port Clements to see the Sitka spruce trees of this temperate rainforest. Established in 1907, Port Clements became the Queen Charlotte Islands’ first incorporated town in 1914, and was a supply center for spruce trees used in the construction of First World War military airplanes. Enjoy a walk along the Golden Spruce Trail and spend a moment of quiet splendor under the moss-laden canopy of the gigantic trees.

After dinner at the Haida House, enjoy a farewell beach bonfire.

Day 5: Sandspit, Vancouver & Depart For Home

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Today you have the choice between a guided tour of the nearby village of Tlell to meet its resident artisans, or kayaking on the Tlell River (depending on the tides).

In the late morning you will be transferred to the dock for the ferry ride back to Sandspit, where you will walk the Dover Trail with a guide to view the old-growth forest.

After lunch at the Inn at Sandspit , transfer to the airport for your flight back to Vancouver, to catch your flight home or on to your next destination.
