Day 1: San Jose, Tirimbina Rainforest Reserve & Sarapiqui

Accommodation: Rainforest Lodge

Leaving the bustling capital of San Jose, experience changing landscapes and temperatures as you cross the Braulio Carrillo Cloud Forest National Park en route to Sarapiqui. This is your first introduction to what an incredible and diverse country Costa Rica is. Upon arrival, take a guided hike in Tirimbina Rainforest Reserve which protects 865 acres of pristine forest. The reserve's habitats include river banks, islands, forest edge, gardens, and this area is often a favourite amongst travellers. Walk across one of the longest hanging bridges in Costa Rica to admire many of the 420 species of bird including parrots, herons, toucans and other cheeky residents.

Optional night bat tour:

If you're looking for something different to do in the evening then bat viewing should be at the top of your list! Bats represent almost 50% of the mammals in Costa Rica with over 100 different species, but they're not as creepy as you might think! Learn more about these fascinating creatures and seize the opportunity to get up close and personal.

Day 2: Guapiles & Tortuguero Canals

Accommodation: Caribbean Eco Lodge

Pass by Guapiles, made famous for its banana plantations across the Caribbean lowlands before stepping aboard your boat through the Tortuguero Canals towards Tortuguero. During the cruise you'll more than likely see wildlife such as sloths, monkeys, crocodiles and turtles. Stop by the Green Turtle Information Center and find out why Tortuguero beach is the most important nesting site of the endangered green turtle in the Western Hemisphere.

Day 3: Tortuguero National Park & Cahuita on the Caribbean

Experience nature at its very best during your sunrise boat tour through the small canals of this National Park. Framing your view will be an incredible rainforest with over three hundred bird species, swamp forest and floating aquatic plants. Watch and listen as the forest comes alive to the sound of birds and other animals, and don't forget your camera! Wildlife spotted on previous trips includes the fishing bulldog bat, keel billed toucans, anurans, seven species of turtles, West Indies manatees, crocodiles and the gar, considered a living fossil. All this before you've even eaten breakfast! With full bellies after breakfast, you enjoy your last ride through the canals on your way back to La Pavona/Cano Blanco. Hit the road again and continue along the coastal road to the small town of Cahuita, with its incredible Caribbean feel.

Day 4: Cahuita Marine National Park & Turrialba

You'll be delighted to wake up in Cahuita; often referred to as one of the most beautiful palm tree beaches in the country with golden sand and warm clear seas. Today you'll have the morning to explore this massive national park by foot or take to the water for snorkelling in the only "living" coral reef on Costa Rica's Caribbean Coast.

In the early afternoon we take the scenic route along a picturesque old road lined with large coffee and sugar cane plantations to our next destination, the Turrialba Volcano area.

Day 5: Turrialba

For those seeking adventure we suggest and exhilarating white water rafting adventure! Set off from the banks of the Pacuare River where our rafts are loaded into the water and where our 14 mile rafting adventure begins. The scenery today is quite simply amazing and it's a really unique way to see the parts of Costa Rica that other travellers don't. Travel deep into the heart of densely vegetated gorges, passing gushing waterfalls and serene pools, but don't get too comfortable - the river's rapids will keep you on your toes.

Those not rafting can opt to walk through the forest, past sugar cane and coffee plantations all the way to the Reventazon River for stunning views.

Day 6: Talamanca Mountain Range & Manuel Antonio National Park

This morning's early start will see you passing through towns including Juan Vinas and Paraíso before hitting the Pan American Highway to begin your climb of the Talamanca Mountain Range. Make a stop to hit the trails, high up in the high mountains at Mirador de Quetzales; one of the richest biological zones in Costa Rica. Here you'll have the chance to see more than 400 species of birds, including the Resplendent Quetzal, phoenix of the forest. Afterwards as you descend towards the city of San Isidro de El General, admiring the beautiful mountainous landscape you'll pass by the city of Quepos before arriving in Manuel Antonio, just in time for a golden sunset on the Pacific coast.

Day 7: La Fortuna, Arenal Volcano Area

Lace up your walking shoes and enjoy a guided morning hike around Manuel Antonio National Park - famed for being an excellent combination of beach and nature. The white sandy beaches Espadilla Sur and Manuel Antonio are known for their calm, crystal clear water slowly lapping against the shoreline. With over 100 species of mammals including the endangered squirrel monkey and nearly 200 bird species you'll be giving your camera a serious workout. Bring your underwater camera too, if you have one, as there's an amazing array of marine life to admire too. Later, cross the Aguacate Mountains to La Fortuna, at the foot of the famous Arenal Volcano.

Day 8: La Fortuna (Arenal)

Today is a free day however we suggest to saddle up for a biking tour through the rain forest where the Volcano and the Lake meet, all the way to the Arenal Volcano National Park. With an almost perfect cone and a 140 meter deep crater formed over an ancient caldera, it's like something out of a movie set.

Optional Arenal Hanging Bridges

Enjoy the breath-taking walk over the hanging bridges, accompanied by a naturalistic guide who will explain and show you the multi-colour world of the tropical rain forest together with the awesome view from the some of the highest bridges in Costa Rica.

Day 9: Arenal Lake crossing & Monteverde Cloud forest

Make a beeline for Arenal Lake, the largest and the most important fresh water lake in Costa Rica. What better way to experience it than to board a boat for a scenic ride across while your guide explains about this lush rainforest, farms and mountains? Next up, continue by land along a dirt-track road to Monteverde, founded by a group of Quaker farmers in the 1950's and today a town which oozes charm. Take a hike inside the humid grounds of Monteverde Private Reserve. The high humidity is thanks to the warm winds that come from both oceans (the Pacific and the Caribbean) and collide together, so it's a great spot for diverse and plentiful flora and fauna. See if you can spot mangoes, purple mayflowers, coyol palms and wild cottons. Different species of trees, orchids and lichens are easily found, as well as bird species including the Resplendent Quetzal, hummingbirds, black guans, toucanets and many more. Some mammals, such as howler monkeys, agoutis and coatis have also been seen on previous trips.

Day 10: Monteverde & Rincon de la Vieja

Travel the Pan American Highway north, passing by the city of Liberia Canas before arriving in Rincon de la Vieja. Do you dare experience the thrill of the 1300 foot mountain waterslide which cuts its way through some of Costa Rica's tropical forests? It's a totally refreshing experience; pure adventure and excitement which you won't forget in a hurry!

Day 11: Rincon de la Vieja National Park & Hermosa Beach

With the first half of the day to explore Rincon de la Vieja National Park (maybe try that waterslide again?) before setting off for the beach, today feels as though you're experiencing two very separate worlds. If you want to explore more of Rincon de la Vieja, there's loads to see, including an active strata Volcano at 1916m above the sea level, giant old growth trees and an abundance of wildlife. At the foot of the southern flank of the volcano you can enjoy Las Pailas; over 133 acres of hot springs, solfataric lakes and holes that expel clouds of steam. This afternoon, the beach calls, so we answer with a trip to Hermosa Beach on the Papagayo Gulf.

Day 12: Hermosa Beach

Today is a totally free day for you to spend at leisure relaxing and swimming in the Pacific Ocean. Hermosa meaning "beautiful" in Spanish, is aptly named, as you'' see from the champagne colour sands and location between two mountains. Seldom as crowded as its neighbouring beaches, Playa Hermosa is a fantastic getaway for those seeking quality relaxation. The town offers excellent shopping, restaurants, bars and activities, or if you prefer to stick to the beach, you can snorkel, try a bit of sport fishing and scuba diving or saddle up for some horse riding along the beach.

Day 13: Hermosa Beach & San Jose

Enjoy one last morning at leisure on the beach before returning to San Jose with a bag full of wonderful memories and whole bunch of new friends!

This tour ends at our gateway hotel at approximately 17:00 in San Jose on day 13. We can book you post-tour accommodation at our gateway hotel if required. If you are planning to fly tonight, please do not book a flight that departs before 21:00.

Not worth it!

It's not worth the price ... Did the Southern Sun this summer and was $700 over my budget... The camping gear is old and sucks. We wasted food and money because of the "food kitty" system. The tour leader had a day off so we had to take and pay for a cab if we wanted to move. Some camp sites were very far from interesting places to visit. We spent most of the time on very touristic places which look the same in every cities. We ate in chain restaurants where food is expensive and bad (never had any discount for large group). I put 2 stars because I still had a good time, I met nice people and saw some awesome places but not the way I wished... It took me a year to save money for this trip and it didn't meet my expectations .

Loved it!!!

Such an amazing experience. Met some lovely people, seen some fabulous places and I absolutely loved it!!!

Amazing experience!

Absolutely Amazing Experience, Met Some Great People and Travelled To Fantastic Places!!!

I did the trailblazer with them and found it very unorganized, half the places they list you get there that late you end up not seeing anything, pretty much set up camp, eat, sleep, pack up and carry on with another long drive. We had two tour leaders, the first one started out okay but went down hill after about 2 weeks, probably cause he was more interested in getting one the girls pants off on tour than actually doing his job, as for the second tour leader, she started badly and got even worse! Rude, up herself, couldn't drive a van save her life, used everyone else's money in the group to buy her fancy food, I could go on but I think you get the picture!
People who write these 5 star reviews must get confused between America the place and the company there touring with! America is an amazing place to visit and travel and to be honest you really don't need trek America, you can do it for a hell of a lot cheaper and probably go for even longer than there treks and still spend less!
They sell it to you that it's an experience travelling with others who like the same things, but please be aware this is not always the case! My group was terrible! (with the exception of 2/3 people) It was great for the first say week or so but then went drastically down hill, and its really not fun been stuck with people you really aren't enjoying being with specially in such a tight confined space such as there vans.
I ended up meeting the most amazing girl on my trek, we ended up together in a relationship and seemed to be penalized for this, due to us doing our own thing an visiting places together, we were made out to be trouble makers as we didn't spend much time socializing with the group ... Which is pathetic as we paid our money so we should have the right do as we please as we weren't hurting anyone.
