Itinerary

Day 1 to 1 Arrive Beijing

For centuries the political heart of this hugely historic country, Beijing is an ever changing city and a looking glass between old and new, with an abundance of activities to enjoy.

Day 2 to 2 Beijing

After breakfast at the hotel you will head out to visit the Tiananmen Square. Having witnessed the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Tiananmen Square is of one the world’s most impressive public plazas, standing in the centre of Beijing. You will continue to the Forbidden City. This palace complex was home to 24 emperors during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Today, the Forbidden City is a public museum and a World Heritage site. Explore the halls and gardens of this ancient home to China's emperors, which also happens to be the best preserved imperial palace in China and the largest ancient palatial structure in the world.

You will enjoy lunch at a local Chinese restaurant before continuing to the Temple of Heaven. This temple was built in 1420 AD during the Ming Dynasty to offer sacrifices to Heaven requesting good harvests. The extensive grounds and pleasant gardens are now a popular public park where local people engage in all sorts of leisure activities and traditional pastimes. To end the day you will watch the famous Peking Opera.

Day 3 to 3 Great Wall of China

After breakfast at the hotel you will head out to visit the Badaling section of the Great Wall of China, which was built in 1505 and is the most visited portion. Having been reconstructed to represent its original grandeur, this section gives a realistic and astounding picture of the Great Wall's immensity.

After lunch at a local restaurant, you will proceed to The Sacred Way which is the historic road that leads to the Ming Tombs. In keeping with its sacred purpose, the road is flanked on either side with impressive statues.

Day 4 to 4 Xi'an

This morning you will visit the Summer Palace, the former retreat for the imperial family. The Summer Palace provides a range of striking views and the opportunity to take in the Kunming Lake. Its buildings and courtyards are beautifully decorated and charged with history. It also features the largest and earliest stone archway in China.

After lunch at a local restaurant, you will be transferred to the airport in time for your flight to Xi’an. Upon arrival, your English-speaking local guide will be on hand to collect you and transfer you to your hotel. Once you have checked in, the remainder of the day is at your leisure.

Day 5 to 5 Xi'an

After breakfast at the hotel you will visit the Terracotta Warrior Museum. The 2000 year old Army of Terracotta Warriors was originally built to guard the burial site of China's first emperor.

After lunch at a local restaurant, you will head to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Originally built in the 7th century AD, the Pagoda has been added to and renovated many times. Its purpose was to house the Buddhist scriptures brought back from India by the travelling monk Xuan Zang.

Day 6 to 6 Chongqing & Yangtze River Cruise

After breakfast at the hotel you will be transferred to the airport to board your flight to Chongqing. Upon arrival, your English-speaking local guide will be on hand to collect you and transfer you to the Erling Park before a visit to the Ciqikou Old Town. Meaning "porcelain port", this ancient town on the Jialing River was built over 1,700 years ago and was a thriving centre for the production of porcelain in the area during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Make your way through the narrow cobbled pedestrian streets to seek out unique shops and teahouses.

After lunch at a local restaurant you will be transferred to the port where you will embark on the luxury Yangtze River Century Cruise. Experience breath-taking scenery and historical sites along China’s longest river as you make your way through the country’s heartland. Passing rugged mountain vistas, bustling cities, and sleepy villages, enjoy a perfect mix of culture and nature. (Please note that the cruise departs every Friday, apart from the low season)

Day 7 to 7 Yangtze River Cruise

Today you will visit the Ghost City Fengdu. There are a number of interesting cultural sites in Fengu and you can take advantage of a shore excursion to see the “Jade Snow Cave” or the “Ghost City on Mingshan Mountain”. Alternatively, you may also visit the Shibaozhai Pagoda which was built against a cliff so only three walls are man-made.

Day 8 to 8 Yangtze River Cruise

The Three Gorges have become famous throughout the world for their stunning beauty and utter immensity. They include the narrow "Qutang Gorge", the mystic "Wu Gorge" with its famous mountains and green slopes, and finally the "Xiling Gorge." Today you will have the opportunity to see all Three Gorges and you will also do a shore excursion to the Shennong Stream and pass the ship locks of Three Gorges Dam.

Day 9 to 9 Yangtze River Cruise & Shanghai

Today you will do a shore excursion to the Three Gorges Dam and visit the Eastern Part of Xiling Gorge. You will disembark from the cruise in Yichang and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. You will then be transferred to the airport to board your flight to Shanghai. Upon arrival, your English-speaking local guide will be on hand to collect you and transfer you to your hotel.

This afternoon you will visit The Bund. This riverfront location is a time-honoured symbol of Shanghai and shows pieces of the city’s Neo-Classical European imperial past, offering a glimpse into Shanghai's earlier interactions with the West. The evening is at your leisure.

Day 10 to 10 Shanghai

Today you will enjoy a full day tour of Shanghai, starting with the Yu Garden. Located in the old city centre, this sublime garden is a great example of classical Chinese design. Constructed 400 years ago in the Ming period, the colossal city of Shanghai has sprung around this older relative but left it to grow old peacefully, providing a tranquil respite from the modern pace of life.

You will then continue to the Jade Buddhist Monastery. The temple is an active site of worship and home to a couple of famous Buddha statues that were brought from Burma in the 1800s. It took ten years to complete its construction, from 1918 to 1928. You will proceed to the Shanghai Museum, largely recognised as China's first world-class museum. Lunch today will be served at a local restaurant and you will also visit a Silk Factory, Duolun Road and the Oriental Pearl Tower.

Day 11 to 11 Depart Shanghai

Your adventure of a lifetime comes to an end today. If you have a late flight or have lengthened your stay by adding post tour accommodation you will have more time to explore the sights.

A great trip which covers a lot of ground allowing you to see a lot of the country. There were plenty of optional activities to choose from, which allowed people to tailor their holidays, with their budget and their interests. We had a great tour leader who went out of her way to help make and change arrangements for anyone in the group as they needed. The only let down for me was that a couple travelling legs of the tour were by public bus, rather than a private bus for the group, in particular the last leg of 5hrs (or more) back to San Jose.

Everything went very smoothly on our tour. We had a fabulous tour guide, who was fun, knowledgeable and organised. We got to visit a lot of places that tourists don’t always get to go. Most accommodation was good. It was interesting and I got to know so much about Cuba.
