Itinerary

Day 1 to 1 Havana

On the first day of your tour arrive into the colourful colonial city of Havana. Ease yourself into the Cuban way of living with further information on getting around, all welcoming you to a country that is filled with Caribbean influence and bursting with Latin flavour. If you wish to arrive earlier, there are additional activities which you can opt to do. Alternatively, rest up at the Havana homestay before your adventure of a lifetime commences.

Day 2 to 2 Havana

Founded by the Spanish in 1519, the capital of Cuba offers plenty to see and do. Kick start your Cuban adventure on the second day of the tour by going back in time and exploring Old Havana at the heart of the city on a walking tour taking you around the main sites.

Explore Old Havana which is famous for its colourful old buildings and fortresses which is why it was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1982 because of the city’s ability to maintain its old infrastructure and architecture. Walk by architectural treasures such as Museo de la Revolución, (or Museum of the Revolution), historical churches and charming old town squares in a city that’s both easy on the eye and a gateway to a Latin experience you won’t be forgetting in a hurry

This is followed by lunch at a traditional family run Paladar restaurant and a chance to ride one of Cuba’s famous classic convertible cars around the various area of Havana, including Centro Vedado, El bosque and Quinda Avenida. End your epic car journey at the Hotel Nacional with a visit to the rooftop terrace.

This evening you have the option to visit one of Havana’s infamous jazz clubs. Enter through the red phone box, a replica of the ones you see in England, before descending down to the basement for a lively night of jazz and cocktails.

Day 3 to 3 Viñales

Leaving the sights and sounds of Havana we journey to the scenic town of Viñales. On the way we will make a couple of stops. First we visit the fishing village of Jaimanitas, which is also known as Fusterlandia in homage to the Cuban artist Jose Fuster who helped to transform it with his colourful mosaic-like artwork.

Later we will come to Las Terrazas, Cuba’s first sustainable rural community and biosphere reserve. Passing through Las Terrazas you will also get the opportunity to spend some time wandering through natural scenery into the small village of Soroa as well as getting the chance to visit the ruins of Cafetal Buenavista, Cuba’s oldest coffee plantation. After enjoying a short stop at Soroa Orchidarium for a walk around the gardens, we will visit the waterfall in Salto de Arco Iris before continuing our adventure driving through the breath-taking Pinar del Rio province.

Day 4 to 4 Viñales

Today we have plenty of time to explore Viñales, a town that is known for its agriculture and tobacco farming. Take in surrounding farmlands and incredible panoramic views as we walk through small private farms, with the option to stop and try the local sugar cane juice as well as a puff on a freshly rolled cigar.

After a big lunch admiring the views of the valley we will travel to the the huge Sierra de los Organos cliff where you will have the chance to admire the 120 metre mural designed in 1961 by Leovigildo Gonzales Morillo.

If you missed out on trying the cigar the adventure continues as we visit a tobacco plantation to see the process of cigar-making before returning to Vinales. You will also have the chance to make the most of the outdoor activities, including cycling or exploring natural caves such as Cueva del Indio, which was used an ancient indigenous living space and is over 1km deep!

Day 5 to 5 Cienfuegos

The following day we make the journey to Cienfuegos, also known as ‘Pearl of the South’. This is a town that is reminiscent of French colonial architecture but with a Caribbean twist.

In the early afternoon we visit the infamous Bay of Pigs/Playa Giron which was once the central location for a failed US invasion and is now a tranquil getaway that is perfect for experiencing water-based activities. Spend some time exploring deep blue waters on an included snorkelling trip and spotting local sea life.

Enjoy a walking city tour during the afternoon as you soak up the sun and the sights before finishing the day off over some drinks.

Day 6 to 6 Trinidad

After a 90 minute drive we enter the vibrant colonial town of Trinidad. Spend the morning walking the town’s colourful streets as you visit local museums and learn more about living like a local throughout a pivotal time in Cuban history that dates back to slavery and the sugar trade of the 15th Century.

In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to spend some free time exploring the rest of this colonial gem. Don’t forget to visit highlights such as the cathedral in Casa de la Musica located in the heart of the town. Cubans love to party so why not opt for some salsa lessons with the experts themselves before gathering by the square in the evening to watch and dance alongside live bands!

Day 7 to 7 Trinidad

Immerse yourself further into Cuban culture with a number of adventure-filled activities, including:

• A visit to Valle de los Ingenios (also known as the valley of the Sugar Mills). Here you can learn more about the history and explore the ruins of the sugar mills before they were destroyed during the War of Independence. You will also visit Manaca Iznaga, an estate that was once owned by Pedro Iznaga who was known for trafficking slaves.

• Nature lovers can enjoy a visit to Sierra del Escambray, a scenic mountain range located 20 kilometres from Trinidad. Take in the magnificent views of the mountains alongside Mockingbirds and other colourful wildlife on a 1-1.5 hr walk each way. Go for a swim at the end of the walk at the Javira Waterfall.

• A chance to soak up the sun, sea and sand at at Playa Ancon, which is arguably one of Cuba’s best beaches to visit on the southern coast.

Day 8 to 8 Havana (Via Santa Clara)

Today we make the journey back to vibrant Havana via Santa Clara.

A hidden gem in Cuba, the revolutionary city of Santa Clara was once taken over by guerrilla armies, one of which was led by Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara who gained fame as an outspoken critic of U.S foreign policy, and played a key role as a leading advocate for the Cuban way of living and socialism that we have witnessed over the years.

It is in the city of Santa Clara that Che Guevara’s body is laid to rest, which the group will have an opportunity to visit at the Che Guevara Mausoleum and Memorial. Here you will also learn more about his involvement with the Cuba’s former political leader, Fidel Castro and the Cuban revolution.

Day 9 to 9 Havana

Your adventure of a lifetime comes to an end today. If you have a late flight or have lengthened your stay by adding post tour accommodation you will have more time to explore the sights.

A great trip which covers a lot of ground allowing you to see a lot of the country. There were plenty of optional activities to choose from, which allowed people to tailor their holidays, with their budget and their interests. We had a great tour leader who went out of her way to help make and change arrangements for anyone in the group as they needed. The only let down for me was that a couple travelling legs of the tour were by public bus, rather than a private bus for the group, in particular the last leg of 5hrs (or more) back to San Jose.

Everything went very smoothly on our tour. We had a fabulous tour guide, who was fun, knowledgeable and organised. We got to visit a lot of places that tourists don’t always get to go. Most accommodation was good. It was interesting and I got to know so much about Cuba.
