Itinerary

Day 1-2: Depart home / Overnight flight to Lyon, France / Transfer to Chalon-sur-Saône

Meals: Dinner

If you book your airfare to Lyon through Vantage, you will be greeted by a Vantage representative at the airport and transferred to Chalon-sur-Saône to embark your French culinary cruise. Join your fellow  travelers the evening of your arrival for a Welcome Drink aboard your Deluxe river ship.

Day 3: Chalon-sur-Saône (Beaune and Burgundy) / Tournus

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

This morning, your French culinary cruise brings you to Burgundy, one of France's most renowned wine regions. In the town of Beaune, you'll enjoy a wine tasting and visit the 15th-century Hôtel-Dieu, a former charity hospital famed for its intricately patterned roof tiles. Cultural Connection: Next, make a stop at a local mustard factory to learn about Burgundy's traditional mustard-making method. Cultural Connection: After lunch on board, limber up your tongue with a fun French language lesson on board, including handy phrases for travelers. Tonight, an award-winning accordionist will come aboard to entertain you with his diverse music selection.

Day 4: Tournus / Macon

Meals: 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner

Today, you'll travel through rolling landscapes on an excursion to the grand Cluny Abbey, a Benedictine monastery that once housed Europe's most treasured library. Savor more of France's gustatory delights during your visit to a cheese farm, where you'll sample fresh goat cheese. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in Cluny. On your trip back to the ship, you'll pass darling little villages and historic châteaux. Tonight after dinner, enjoy the musical stylings of the band La Strada.

Day 5: Macon / Lyon (Beaujolais Region)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

As your French culinary cruise continues this morning, set out on an excursion to Beaujolais, a wine region renowned for its vibrant, fruity reds. Savor several of these famous French wines during a wine tasting at Hameau du Vin. Cultural Connection: After the tasting, four travelers from each group will be selected for induction into the Brotherhood of the Golden Stones — Grappilleurs du Beaujolais. Dressed in their traditional costume, active members of the brotherhood will attend the ceremony, which will be followed by lunch at a local restaurant. Cultural Connections: After departing Mâcon, listen to a special "French Waterways" lecture as you cruise toward Lyon. Then, witness the creation of a true French masterpiece during a crème brûlée-making demonstration on board.

Day 6: Lyon

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today, you'll arrive in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lyon — a highlight of your French culinary cruise — considered to be France’s “food capital.” Your visit begins with a city tour, including a stop at the famous Halles de Lyon gourmet market—where you can wander the colorful stalls brimming with local gastronomic specialties, kitchen items, and more — and the enchanting Old Town. (Please Note: The Halles de Lyon market is closed on Mondays, which may coincide with some 2015 departures. Instead, you will enjoy extra sightseeing time in Lyon.) Spend this afternoon at leisure. Cultural Connection: If you choose, you'll be introduced to another Lyonnais tradition when you watch a silk-painting demonstration on board. Tonight, you'll enjoy dinner at an authentic Lyonnais bouchon, one of the family-style restaurants for which Lyon is well-known.

Day 7: Lyon / Vienne

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Enjoy the morning at leisure in Lyon or join an optional excursion to the Medieval village of Pérouges, where you can sample the town’s favorite pastry, the galette, along with some locally produced sparkling wine. Following lunch, your river cruise ship will depart Lyon to sail south towards Vienne. This evening, join your fellow travelers for the Captain’s Dinner. Then, you may feel like dancing the night away when a lively party band comes aboard to play.

Day 8: Vienne

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning, take your choice of tours in Vienne: a relaxed walking tour of the Roman-era settlement with ancient theatres and temples, or a more rigorous walk up the hill overlooking the town. Cultural Connection: Back aboard your French culinary cruise, learn more about the pillars of the French daily during a cheese, wine, and bread demonstration and tasting. Tonight after dinner, enjoy Movie Night in the lounge, featuring La Mome.

Day 9: Viviers / Avignon

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Arriving in Viviers early this morning, you’ll begin with a walking tour to see the Bishop’s Palace, Cathedral, and Knight’s Residence. Cultural Connection: Marvel at the acoustics in Viviers Cathedral during a Vantage-exclusive organ concert. Cultural Connection: Before returning to your ship, try your hand at a game of pétanque, similar to bocce, and sip pastis, a traditional anise-flavored liqueur of southern France. After lunch on board, your ship will depart Viviers and sail towards Avignon. This evening after dinner, stretch your legs and sample the local nightlife during a guided pub crawl in Avignon.

Day 10: Avignon

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Begin your day of delights with a visit to another UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fortified city of Avignon. You'll have a choice of walking tours here: A tour of the city includes a guided visit to the vast Palais des Papes, or Popes’ Palace, while the "Secrets of Avignon" tour includes entrance to the palace and time to visit on your own. You'll also see the remaining arches of the Avignon bridge, which has been immortalized in a popular French folk song, "Sur le Pont d'Avignon" ("On the Bridge of Avignon"). Cultural Connection: After lunch on board, discover the sweet side of the region during a lecture on the "Thirteen Desserts of Provence," followed by free time to explore Avignon. Toast your French culinary cruise this evening at the Captain's Farewell Party, followed by dinner and an evening of Gypsy and Rumba entertainment on board.

Days 11-12: Avignon / Tarascon / Disembark ship / Return home

Meals: 2 Breakfasts, 2 Lunches, 2 Dinners

This morning while you depart Avignon for Tarascon, sip champagne during a Sail Away Party. Once you arrive, take a walking tour of Tarascon — an ancient town on the east bank of the Rhône. This afternoon, enjoy time at leisure OR take an optional tour to the soaring Pont du Gard — a three-tiered Roman aqueduct now designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Survey the surrounding countryside from the bridge, visit the museum below, and explore on your own. Enjoy dinner and and evening at leisure aboard ship.

The next morning after breakfast, disembark your river ship and bid adieu to Provence. Transfer to the airport in Marseille for your return flight home or continue on with your post-trip extension.
