Highlights
  • Experience a festival on every trip, including Buddhist festivals (Mar and Sep), Wintering Crane Festival (Nov)
  • Exhilarating day hikes to traditional villages and mountain temples
  • Hike to the famous cliff hermitage of Taktsang
  • Meet farmers and monks
  • Deluxe Zhiwa Ling Hotel in Paro and Taj Tashi in Thimphu

In the secluded Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, Buddhism permeates every aspect of daily life, hidden valleys shelter ancient fortress-monasteries, and the king decrees “Gross National Happiness” as the standard by which to measure the country’s wealth. On our journey through this mystical Shangri La, you’ll hike to tiny villages and spectacular mountainside shrines, explore lively artisan markets, and meet red-robed monks in chanting halls. Our April and September trips coincide with Tsechu festivals, with their wildly colorful masked dances, and our November departure attends the Wintering Crane Festival in the Phobjikha Valley. And no matter which departure you choose, we’ll be sure you get a chance to try your hand at archery, Bhutan’s national sport.

Itinerary

Days 1-2: Paro / Thimphu (Paro Festival Departure)

From Paro, head to Thimphu for a lovely hike through pine and rhododendron forests to Wangdi-Tse Monastery, built in 1750 and perched above the verdant Thimphu Valley. Our time here includes a visit to the Folk Heritage Museum

Days 3-4: Phobjikha Valley

Crossing the Dochu La, we discover the alpine setting of the glacier-carved Phobjikha Valley (9,500’), where our explorations include golden-roofed Gangtey Monastery. On our November trip we’ll be on the lookout for the flocks of migrating black-necked cranes that visit this high valley each fall.

Days 5-7: Punakha Valley

In the broad Punakha Valley, we immerse ourselves in this tranquil region of farming hamlets and rice terraces. Our hike brings you to Chimi Lhakhang, a renowned fertility temple dedicated to a popular Tibetan Buddhist saint and folk hero. Get a peek into the winter palace of Je Khenpo, Bhutan’s head abbot, during our explorations of the ornately painted Punakha Dzong, built as a fortress in the 17th century. Return to Paro on Day 7.

Days 8-10: Paro / Paro Festival

In the green Paro Valley, our hike brings you to breathtaking Taktsang Monastery, the “Tiger’s Nest.” At the Paro Festival, we witness an exuberant multi-day event that is both a community gathering and a Tibetan Buddhist ceremony during which locals watch elaborate masked dance-dramas and receive blessings. Try for a karay (bullseye), during your lesson in archery. Depart on Day 10.
