Short Description

China, Pakistan & India - This totally unique itinerary takes us on a wonderful journey along the southern branch of the Old Silk Road. Starting in Kashgar where we will witness the famous Yakshmbe Bazaar - otherwise known as the Sunday Market - we will continue through the stunning mountains of northern Pakistan to the tranquil foothills of the Indian Himalayas.

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Itinerary

Days 1: Tour starts in Kashgar (China)

Tour starts in Kashgar. This afternoon we take an orientation walk around this fascinating town

Day 2: Kashgar

A full day to explore Kashgar. We visit the Abak Hoja tomb and the Silk Road Museum as well as the street markets.

Day 3: Kashgar

Visit the Id Kah mosque in the morning before experiencing Yakshambe Bazaar, one of the biggest in Central Asia.

Day 4: Kashgar – Tashkurgan

Heading south on the Silk Road we come to Tashkurgan, famed for its old fortress which we visit. This is the start of the famed "Karakoram Highway" (KKH) which links Kashgar to Islamabad. It is one of the world's great drives.

Day 5: Tashkurgan – Passu (Pakistan)

We start early to cross the border and later on head down to Passu through striking mountain scenery.

Days 6: Passu

We use jeeps to drive to the spectacular Eagles Nest Hotel at 2850m, surrounded by 7000m peaks.

Day 7: Hunza

There is plenty to do in this incredible location, or you may wish to just soak up the views.

Day 8: Hunza

We have another day in this stunning area with opportunities for walks, fort visits or just relaxing with the locals.

Day 9: Hunza - Gilgit

Leaving Hunza, we continue along the KKH to the strategic town of Gilgit.

Days 10: Giligit - Fairy Meadows

Continuing south on the KKH, we make for another magical location beneath Nanga Parbat, the end of the Himalayas - Fairy Meadows. Inaccessible by vehicles, we will transfer the final stretch on foot.

Day 11: Fairy Meadows

Today we have the opportunity to walk through forested foothills to Bayel Camp

Day 12: Fairy Meadows - Naran

After returning to the road, we'll head for Chilas where we'll leave the KKH and take a lesser used route over the Babusa Pass to Naran. On arrival, we hope to go for a walk to meet some Kutchi nomads.

Day 13: Naran - Taxila

We drive towards the Pakistani capital stopping off in Taxila, the Buddhist University town dating back to the Gandharan era.

Days 14: Taxila - Islamabad

After a morning taking in the ancient sights of Taxila we drive to Islamabad where we visit the Faisal Mosque, and the Lok Virsa Museum.

Day 15: Islamabad - Lahore

This morning we'll head for the "cultural capital" of Lahore for a visit to the famous Ajeeb Ghar or 'Wonder House', and the beautiful Shalamar Gardens.

Days 16: Lahore

Our final morning in Pakistan allows a visit to the magnificent fort and the old town before moving on to the Wagah border with India to observe the nightly "closing of the gate" ceremony.

Day 17: Amritsar (India)

We spend our time visiting Sikhism's holiest shrine - the wonderful and evocative Golden Temple and pay our respects at the Jallianwalla Barg.

Days 18: Amritsar

This morning we drive to Jammu to take our flight to Srinagar. On arrival we are transferred by shikara to our houseboat on Dal Lake.

Day 19: Srinagar

Floating vegetable markets, the beautiful Moghul Gardens and a stroll to Hari Parbat Fort if security allows, all set against the stunning backdrop of Kashmir.

Day 20: Srinagar

Another day to enjoy the peace and serenity of our surroundings.

Day 21: Srinagar - Delhi

We have a relaxing morning before taking our flight to Delhi where the tour ends.

Love Wild Frontiers because of choice of trips and guides. Remember particularly Dhala Campbell in Palestine as typifying the brand, slightly whacky (sorry, Dhala) but tremendously efficient and fun. Really interesting people are attracted to the unusual trips which adds to the enjoyment.
