Short Description

Kyrgyzstan, China, Tajikistan & Uzbekistan - This unique Wild Frontiers tour takes you on an epic cultural journey along the Old Silk Road through some of Central Asia’s most spectacular mountains, lively bazaars and ancient towns.

Our aim is to stick as closely as possible to the ancient trade routes even though modern borders and some rough roads do not always make this an easy thing to do! Traversing parts of Kyrgyzstan, China, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, the route offers adventure and culture in equal measure. Riding horses or walking in the mountains by Son Kul Lake or the ancient caravanserai of Tash Rabat will give you a chance to witness the Tien Shan Mountains at their most beautiful. While wandering through the gargantuan sites of Samarkand or sleepy Bukhara, you will be taken back to the heyday of the Silk Road.

For those with a sense of adventure, an interest in history and culture – and a good amount of energy – it is a trip you will remember for a very long time to come.

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Day 10: Take a stunning drive back into Kyrgyzstan and over the Irkishtam Pass with the High Pamirs above.

Day 11: Sary Tash - Osh

Days 18-19: Samarkand - Bukhara

Day 18: We drive the Royal Road this morning, visiting an old caravanserai en route, before arriving in Bukhara. There'll be time to explore the old town this afternoon.

Day 19: The best way to discover Bukhara is to get lost in the streets of silk weaving and knife carving, and we'll have plenty of time for this today.

Day 20: Our final major drive crosses the desert and the famous Amu-Darya River (Oxus) before arriving in the incredible UNESCO town of Khiva.

We had been planning a trip to southern India when we saw the Gill Charlton/Wild Frontiers article in the Telegraph - almost exactly what we were thinking of. WF were so good at accommodating the changes we had in mind and putting the itinerary together. It worked seamlessly from end to end and we had a magical holiday. Thanks Guys.

This was the holiday of a lifetime for us - it was a truly immersive experience, with a full on itinerary that enabled us to see many historic and iconic sites as well as explore more rural areas and meet local people and see their way of life. Rajasthan is colourful in every sense of the word, and we had an amazingly vivid experience on this holiday. Wild Frontiers gets the balance just right, and we had great fun with our group, and were superbly supported by our guide Bhopal - he became a friend as well as being and excellent guide throughout

Thank you for a remarkable experience. My senses and comfort zone were challenged, but any apprehension was dispelled by the kindness, humour and friendliness of the people. They really do want to welcome more visitors. Our brief adventure into their culture was humbling. Mass foreign tourism doesn’t exist yet, but domestic tourism is popular, so go now before it changes. Manic cities, markets and roads are contrasted by the tranquility and magic of the Chittagong Hill Tracts and the Sunderbans. The “hidden charm” that everybody wanted to see unexpectedly revealed itself on the shore. Yes ! the rare and elusive Sunderban Tiger. A euphoric experience for everyone, and one I will never forget.

The Footsteps of Shackleton expedition exceeded all expectations. The ship was comfortable, the expedition team were enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Every member of the crew worked hard to ensure we had memorable time on board. The Falkland Islands surprised us with their beauty; South Georgia is not to be missed for its sheer volume of wildlife, its remoteness and stunning landscapes. Antarctica’s icebergs, whales and penguins were more than one could wish for

This was a wonderful tour with a brilliant tour leader. The variety of things we saw was breath-taking - the big monuments, the amazing wildlife, real life in the rural houses, village school and farm, lunatic traffic in the cities and occasional silence in the countryside, the food, the characterful hotels, the friendliness of the people. We learned so much about India's joys and frustrations, its history and colour, but we know there is a whole lot more yet to be seen
