Best Things to Do in Turkey

Iconic Attractions & Hidden Gem Travel Experiences

Turkey

Turkey straddles two continents -- Europe and Asia -- but even the smaller European section, on the western side of the Bosporus, has a strong Middle Eastern feel. The star attraction of the European side is Istanbul, with its iconic Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. The Asian side features classical ruins at Ephesus, cave dwellings at Cappadocia, and beach resorts along the coasts. It's a don't-miss destination, whichever continent you're exploring.

Top Turkey Experiences

Marveling over the Byzantine architecture of Hagia Sophia.

Dining at a rooftop restaurant situated between Istanbul’s Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, as the sun sets and the iconic, exotic structures are illuminated.

Kayak above the underwater, ancient ruins of Kekova, off Turkey’s south coast along the Lycian Trail.

Riding the ferries across the Bosphorus while crossing from Europe to Asia or vice versa.

Wandering through the seemingly endless market stalls in Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar as persistent salesman hawk rugs, jewelry and souvenirs.

Watching a whirling dervish twirl and sway for hours on an outdoor stage, seemingly mesmerized by the entrancing rhythms of the sufi music played in the background.

Making a quick but tasty lunch of a fresh grilled fish sandwich sold at a sidewalk stand near the Bosphorus.

Attending a Sufi dance performance.

Taking a hot air balloon ride over the amazing landscape at Cappadocia, where the unusual volcanic rock formations are pocked with underground cave dwellings.

Things to do in Turkey - Expert’s guide

1. Istanbul

Istanbul cathedral in Turkey

Among the top places to visit in Turkey is the city of Istanbul, if not only for the chance to cover two continents in one visit. In this European and Asian metropolis, luxury Istanbul tours will likely highlight the Hagia Sophia, Grand Bazaar, Sultanahmet and famous Blue Mosque, among other cultural and religious landmarks.

2. Ephesus

Ephesus ruins in turkey

Archaeology buffs visiting Turkey won’t want to miss Ephesus, the Mediterranean’s most well-preserved city. The famous Temple of Artemis is one of the original Seven Wonders of the World. Tours of Ephesus will also visit the Temple of Serapis, the Library of Celsus, the Temple of Hadrian and more - perfect for history lovers.

3. Gallipoli

While it has a bloody history - as a WWI battleground, Gallipoli is known today for its beautiful flora and fauna and stunning beaches.

4. Pamukkale

Pamukkale pools in Turkey

Spa lovers visiting Turkey won’t want to miss this ancient Roman healing center near Hierapolis, known for its mineral-rich waters that cascade over brilliantly white calcium deposits.

5. Cappadocia

Hot air balloons over cappadocia in turkey

Unusual, mysterious and intriguing, Cappadocia’s landscape is one of the most popular natural wonders in Turkey. Visit UNESCO-listed Goreme and its more than 30 Byzantine churches, take a hot-air balloon rise over the incredible landscape, visit underground churches and marvel at the rock formations that are unlike anything you’ve seen before.

6. Pergamum

Pergamum archaeological site in Turkey

Today’s Turkey tours will call it Bergama, but it was originally called Pergamum and was home to a great library that rivalled the one in Alexandria. Pergamum’s top attractions include a steep, hillside amphitheater, the Roman theater, a sacred well, the Temple of Telesphorus and the medical (spa) center, the Asclepion.

7. Fethiye

Fethiye in Turkey

Fethiye is a popular jumping-off point for a vacation along Turkey’s Turquoise Coast, or the Turkish Riviera. Take a day cruise to the various islands, explore Lycian ruins or just drink in the view from the beach.

8. Bodrum

White houses on coastline in Bodrum Turkey

Speaking of the Turquoise Coast, charming Bodrum is one of Turkey’s top beach resorts and sunny holiday destinations. If you can, try to find a Bodrum tour that includes a day sailing on the Mediterranean, a perfect vantage point from which to snap photos of the region’s iconic whitewashed houses.

9. Aspendos

If you’ve visited the Colosseum, it’s time to tour Turkey’s Aspendos, a favorite of historians and archaeologists due to its incredible preservation. To visit Aspendos, look for Turkey tours that include the Antalya Province.

10. Bursa

Small-group tours of Turkey focused on the country’s rich history may visit Bursa, former capital of the Ottoman Empire. Bursa is one of Turkey’s numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites and home to many bazaars and mosques, as well as the village of Cumalıkızık.

My first experience of this type of holiday. Very full on, but had an amazing experience. Packed everything in, and shared it with a lovely group of people. Very knowledgeable guide, who looked after us very well. Smooth travelling so we could just enjoy the experience.

Turkey is a huge, fascinating country and this in depth tour gets many things right, but there is inevitably, a lot of travelling by coach. However, the itinerary is well considered and all the sites and destinations carefully chosen. We had an exceptional leader Alkan, who sourced restaurants seamlessly, checked on our welfare daily and was generally a wealth of support, knowledge and humour throughout. I also travelled with a wonderful group of kind, witty people, always a bonus. Book this trip, you won’t regret it. I’m hoping that Explore put on a tour of the Eastern part of Turkey soon. I’ll be booking that one!

A full on, varied trip. We travelled 3400 kilometres, exploring a number of ancient sites and enjoying some good Turkish food. Alkan was a very good leader, solving all problems along the way. We had a lovely group which made for a relaxing trip. My highlights were the full day in Cappadocia. A sunrise balloon ride to begin, then walks amongst spectacular rock formations, swims at the hotel and an unforgettable evening in a gladiatorial style restaurant with entertainment by local costumed dancers. Kas and Dalyan were highlights too.

Winter in Turkey by Explore!
Winter in Turkey
Really enjoyed this trip! Tim was the tour leader. I can't say enough great things about him. He took care of us from minute one, even showing up in the early hours of the morning to greet us upon arrival and get us settled into the hotel. He has an incredible amount of knowledge on any topic, is friendly, good humored and organized. The trip itinerary is good, the weather was very nice over the xmas holidays. Hotels are of variable quality, but okay. Just have an open mind. I liked how we ate at a good mix of local and more touristy restaurants. Recommended.
