Things to do in Turkey - Expert’s guide
1. Istanbul
Among the top places to visit in Turkey is the city of Istanbul, if not only for the chance to cover two continents in one visit. In this European and Asian metropolis, luxury Istanbul tours will likely highlight the Hagia Sophia, Grand Bazaar, Sultanahmet and famous Blue Mosque, among other cultural and religious landmarks.
2. Ephesus
Archaeology buffs visiting Turkey won’t want to miss Ephesus, the Mediterranean’s most well-preserved city. The famous Temple of Artemis is one of the original Seven Wonders of the World. Tours of Ephesus will also visit the Temple of Serapis, the Library of Celsus, the Temple of Hadrian and more - perfect for history lovers.
3. Gallipoli
While it has a bloody history - as a WWI battleground, Gallipoli is known today for its beautiful flora and fauna and stunning beaches.
4. Pamukkale
Spa lovers visiting Turkey won’t want to miss this ancient Roman healing center near Hierapolis, known for its mineral-rich waters that cascade over brilliantly white calcium deposits.
5. Cappadocia
Unusual, mysterious and intriguing, Cappadocia’s landscape is one of the most popular natural wonders in Turkey. Visit UNESCO-listed Goreme and its more than 30 Byzantine churches, take a hot-air balloon rise over the incredible landscape, visit underground churches and marvel at the rock formations that are unlike anything you’ve seen before.
6. Pergamum
Today’s Turkey tours will call it Bergama, but it was originally called Pergamum and was home to a great library that rivalled the one in Alexandria. Pergamum’s top attractions include a steep, hillside amphitheater, the Roman theater, a sacred well, the Temple of Telesphorus and the medical (spa) center, the Asclepion.
7. Fethiye
Fethiye is a popular jumping-off point for a vacation along Turkey’s Turquoise Coast, or the Turkish Riviera. Take a day cruise to the various islands, explore Lycian ruins or just drink in the view from the beach.
8. Bodrum
Speaking of the Turquoise Coast, charming Bodrum is one of Turkey’s top beach resorts and sunny holiday destinations. If you can, try to find a Bodrum tour that includes a day sailing on the Mediterranean, a perfect vantage point from which to snap photos of the region’s iconic whitewashed houses.
9. Aspendos
If you’ve visited the Colosseum, it’s time to tour Turkey’s Aspendos, a favorite of historians and archaeologists due to its incredible preservation. To visit Aspendos, look for Turkey tours that include the Antalya Province.
10. Bursa
Small-group tours of Turkey focused on the country’s rich history may visit Bursa, former capital of the Ottoman Empire. Bursa is one of Turkey’s numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites and home to many bazaars and mosques, as well as the village of Cumalıkızık.
