What travelers are saying

"I've traveled to Europe several times before but not like this. Thanks to Kelley and her amazing knowledge and patience with all my queries, my famiy and I enjoyed a customized itinerary filled with a food tour in Paris and a cooking lesson in Naples, history and art lessons at the British Museum and Musee D'Orsay, with enough time to travel independently and make new discoveries with less hassle than before. I absolutely recommend the Relaxed Explorer to anyone looking to make memorable trips with their families that will be cherished by all. Thank you so much Kelley!! Would love to make more good travel memories with your help!!"

What travelers are saying

"The trip was well laid out. Tour guides were friendly and knowledgeable. The only complaint is some of our travel documents that were sent out were not in English. If your sending documents out correspondence should be in both the native language and the language of the people the correspondence to. Other than that a great first time experience."

What travelers are saying

"Our family of four, including two adult children, took the Bicycling: Day Trips to Paradise in Canada. This trip is entirely outsourced to the owners of the inn, there are no Road Scholar employees involved in the trip. Two of us have taken bicycle trips all over the world and the bicycling component of this trip was disorganized, haphazard and almost unsafe. We all filled out forms giving details regarding our bicycle fitting months before the trip. On the first day, the leader Stephen, went around the room and asked the same questions and said everyone would get fitted in the morning before we began the first ride. The morning brought a rack of bikes, all different types in various levels of readiness. There were road bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. The rides were all on paved surfaces and the mountain bikes were heavy and the additional suspension added weight. The bike I received had rust on the chain and rear sprocket. When I asked about it, was told they were waiting for another van to show up with tools and equipment. Once it arrived, they gave me the lubricant to spray on the rust. My wife’s bike would not shift into the high gear on the front sprocket. Instead of adjusting the derailleur, they suggested spraying it with lubricant. Our one son is over six feet and needed a larger frame bike, even though he detailed it in the bike form months ago, there was no bike to fit him. One of the guides, then went home and brought a larger bike that was a full suspension mountain bike for him. The bike was very heavy, hard to control on the road and he felt unsafe. After two days, one of the guides convinced Stephen that they could adjust a hybrid bike to fit him. Clearly there was no work done to prepare the bikes for the trip. Many of the bikes needed adjusting and all needed lubricant to function easily. For every day, there was a tray of snacks placed out for us to take along the ride. None of the bikes had any baskets or attached bags, so if you didn’t bring a small day pack, there was no way to carry the snacks. For lunch on the rides, they brought exactly one sandwich for each rider. Since most of us get hungry while doing a day of exercise, it would have been helpful to have a few extras. On one day, they ran out of sandwiches and one of the leaders that were riding with us did not get lunch. Do NOT take this trip if you are expecting it to be a bicycling trip. We have used VBT and Discovery Bicycle Tours many times over the past 25 years and they are excellent bike tour companies. Lastly, after sharing these details with Road Scholar after the trip, their response was weak at best. After doing the full reviews and having to call them, their response was to give us $200 credit after spending $8000 on this trip. Not only was that insulting, they assumed that I would take another trip with their organization."

What travelers are saying

"We purchased two backpacks from Rick Steves Europe. One of them arrived damaged and unusable. Their website says that you must contact them if you receive damaged merchandise. I have attempted to email them through their website and I have left 3 voicemails (nobody answers the phone, ever!) and nobody has contacted me back. At this point, it seems like I've been ripped off. Buyer beware. Extremely disappointed."

What travelers are saying

"The cruise was cancelled 2 weeks before departure. The replacement was a serious step down and appalling. The Croisi Boat (MV Beethoven) should be avoided at all possible cost. It is a rattling banging creaking heap. VJV just dump people when they arrive (they booked flights and transfers) with no refreshments, no protection from the cold and no information. They are just let to wait for the boat to allow them on, which was around 2 hours. To save money, they all dock alongside each other and this boat is the last. You need to cross two other boats to get ashore and the crossings are precarious and worrying for elderly or disabled passengers. It is impossible to sleep in cabins akin to prison cells with the torture of noise all night long"

Tuscany Tour Selection Trips

  • If you love Renaissance art, architecture, and culture, look for tours that spend at least three days in Florence
  • Like other popular parts of Italy, Tuscany gets huge numbers of tourists in summertime; consider visiting in the offseason
  • Fall harvest season may be the most beautiful time of year in the Tuscan countryside; spring can be rainy
  • Taking an all-inclusive guided tour can save you time and money in Florence and in some other areas of Tuscany, where virtually all attractions (including churches) charge admission and attract long lines of visitors that tours can avoid.
  • As wonderful as its cities are, Tuscany’s countryside should not be missed
  • If you have the possibility of making return trips, take them – it’s hard to cover all of Tuscany in one tour
  • If you plan to rent a car on your own, wait until you’ve finished seeing Florence – driving there is a nightmare and you’ll walk everywhere anyway

Additional details

How Big is Tuscany?

Italy is made up of 20 different regions. Tuscany is the fifth largest region at around 8,900 sq. miles and is just a little larger than the state of New Jersey. While Tuscany is large, you can easily get around with local trains or buses.

Many Tuscany tour packages include day trips from the major cities of Florence and Siena to the top Tuscan sites since these cities are centrally located.

Where is Tuscany?

Tuscany is located on the northwestern coast of Italy between Genoa and Rome. The region shares its borders with the Ligurian Sea and five other Italian regions, including the ones home to Rome, Milan, and Bologna.

What is the Weather Like in Tuscany?

With its central location in Italy, Tuscany sees all four seasons. Temperatures can range from over 100 degrees during the summer to below freezing during the winter.

Tuscany during the summer can be extremely warm. The warmest months are July and August with days full of sunshine and few clouds. These two months can be very stifuling since there is very little rain during July and August.

The fall is similar to that of fall in the Midwest in the United States. Days are still warm without being unbearable, but you will see rainy days in the late-fall.

Winter in Tuscany varies depending on where you visit. The days are mild, but the nights get colder. On the plateaus and in the cities of Tuscany the days stay cool, but if you are visiting the mountains you will have to face snow and freezing temperatures.

Spring is full of flowers, rain, and sun. March is one of the rainiest months in Tuscany so make sure you take an umbrella, but as you get closer to May the days get sunnier and drier.

Wine Tasting Etiquette in Italy

If you’ve ever done a wine tasting in California or another part of the U.S., you may be in for a little surprise when doing a wine tasting in Italy.

Generally, you have to pre-book a wine tasting in Tuscany, whereas in California you can usually just pop in and try some wine. If you make an appointment with a winery, it is extremely important that you keep your appointment. Also, many of the wineries don’t keep normal business hours, so booking a tasting is ideal.

Drinking wine is a relaxing, longer process in Italy than other countries. Many Italy wine tours only include a couple of wineries so you can get to know more about the wine and the local businesses.

If you are traveling to Italy for the first time, visiting Tuscany on a tour is a good alternative if you’re not sure where or which wineries you want to see as tour companies have hand selected wineries for you.

Best Time to Visit Tuscany

It is said you can visit Tuscany at any time of the year. However, there are a few months when you can see and fully enjoy this flavorful region.

May is considered to be the best time to visit Tuscany. The weather is warm, the days are sunny, and May is right before the beginning of the tourist season. Many small group tours to Tuscany plan their tours for May so you are able to visit all of the major sights before the large crowds arrive. Additionally, going in September is also ideal since it’s cooler out and the tourist season is winding down.

If you visit Tuscany on a tour during July and August be prepared for a large amount of people, extremely warm weather, and some closings. Like many other cities in Italy during the late summer, Tuscan cities are empty of locals as they head for the coasts to get away from the heat. This means that many stores and shops may be closed during these two months. Also, this is high season for Tuscany and the streets and attractions will be very crowded.

Don’t forget about winter! Not many can say they spent Christmas in the Tuscan hills. The Tuscan villages are a wonder to see during the holidays and if you are an avid skier or snowboarder, you will have an amazing time in the resorts scattered across the mountains in Tuscany.
