What travelers are saying

"Our family of four, including two adult children, took the Bicycling: Day Trips to Paradise in Canada. This trip is entirely outsourced to the owners of the inn, there are no Road Scholar employees involved in the trip. Two of us have taken bicycle trips all over the world and the bicycling component of this trip was disorganized, haphazard and almost unsafe. We all filled out forms giving details regarding our bicycle fitting months before the trip. On the first day, the leader Stephen, went around the room and asked the same questions and said everyone would get fitted in the morning before we began the first ride. The morning brought a rack of bikes, all different types in various levels of readiness. There were road bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. The rides were all on paved surfaces and the mountain bikes were heavy and the additional suspension added weight. The bike I received had rust on the chain and rear sprocket. When I asked about it, was told they were waiting for another van to show up with tools and equipment. Once it arrived, they gave me the lubricant to spray on the rust. My wife’s bike would not shift into the high gear on the front sprocket. Instead of adjusting the derailleur, they suggested spraying it with lubricant. Our one son is over six feet and needed a larger frame bike, even though he detailed it in the bike form months ago, there was no bike to fit him. One of the guides, then went home and brought a larger bike that was a full suspension mountain bike for him. The bike was very heavy, hard to control on the road and he felt unsafe. After two days, one of the guides convinced Stephen that they could adjust a hybrid bike to fit him. Clearly there was no work done to prepare the bikes for the trip. Many of the bikes needed adjusting and all needed lubricant to function easily. For every day, there was a tray of snacks placed out for us to take along the ride. None of the bikes had any baskets or attached bags, so if you didn’t bring a small day pack, there was no way to carry the snacks. For lunch on the rides, they brought exactly one sandwich for each rider. Since most of us get hungry while doing a day of exercise, it would have been helpful to have a few extras. On one day, they ran out of sandwiches and one of the leaders that were riding with us did not get lunch. Do NOT take this trip if you are expecting it to be a bicycling trip. We have used VBT and Discovery Bicycle Tours many times over the past 25 years and they are excellent bike tour companies. Lastly, after sharing these details with Road Scholar after the trip, their response was weak at best. After doing the full reviews and having to call them, their response was to give us $200 credit after spending $8000 on this trip. Not only was that insulting, they assumed that I would take another trip with their organization."

What travelers are saying

"The Himalayan Silk Road trip was an extremely well organised trip to a stunning part of the world. Very well planned as we gradually gained altitude by starting in Srinagar and heading East to Leh. From arrival in Delhi until our departure two weeks later everything worked without a hitch staying in some excellent hotels. Something interesting to see and do each day and the travel from location to location was relatively easy due to the well maintained roads despite travelling at very high altitude. From Dal Lake and the gardens in Srinagar, the history of the Silk Road, the Monasteries and Temples in Leh and the beauty of the Nubra Valley - picture postcard views around so many corners. Would highly recommend this trip."

Ukraine Tour Selection Trips

  • Not all “standards” are the same everywhere. Comfort level may not be what you’re used to at home. Make sure you know what you’re going to get when you book a tour, so you don’t end up surprised. Read Ukraine Tour reviews to get a better idea of what to expect
  • Distances between cities are pretty long, which can mean long train rides. If you know you need some time to recover between cities, review the itinerary carefully and look for one that suits your needs and travel desires.
  • If you’re doing an overnight sleeper train, consult your tour coordinator about what sleeper options are available. You may be able to upgrade to a more private cabin, for an additional cost.
  • Some tours focus on the major cities, while others offer a chance to get out and explore nature. If you’re looking to go enjoy the outdoors, consider a trip that includes a stop in the Carpathian Mountains.
  • Many tours offer “regional” travel, that includes stops in other countries such as Moldova. This can be a great option to better understand the Eastern European region.

Additional details

Are Ukrainians Friendly?

Ukrainians are very friendly people! They are generally willing to help give you directions if you’re lost. In general the culture is more reserved, but don’t misinterpret that for unfriendliness. The reason for the reserved behavior could be the language barrier – not all Ukrainians know English, so it can be difficult for tourists who don’t know Cyrillic.

Is Ukraine Safe?

Ukraine is overall a safe country to visit, and should not be skipped out of fear of unsafety. Cities in Eastern Ukraine (such as Donetsk and Lugansk) have conflict, but most tours don't travel to that part of the country. As all countries have, there are some rougher portions, but overall, and especially in the bigger, popular cities (Kiev, Odessa, and Lviv), you should be safe.

The main precautions are the same as visiting any other big city; there will be beggars, pickpockets, etc, so use common sense, and the same caution that you would use in any other country, and you will be fine. Traveling with a tour group can help allieviate some of the safety concerns you may have.

Best Time to Visit Ukraine

Ukraine is a country that experiences all four seasons, so it depends on what type of weather you’re looking for. Most of Ukraine has pretty similar weather across the country.

Summers have sunny, warm days, with highs in the 70’s-low 80’s, and cooler nights dipping down into the mid 60s. Spring and Fall bring highs of 50’s, with lows in the mid-40s. There’s a mix of sunny and rainy days in these seasons, averaging around 14 days of rain.

Winters are cooler, with highs in the upper 20s and low 30s, when night temperatures drop to low 20s. The best time to visit is in from about April-October, when temperatures are still warm and there is longer days of sunshine.

Other Tips for Traveling in Ukraine

  1. Be sure to bring the correct adaptor to charge your electronics. Many hotels have European type sockets. Ukraine uses type C and type F plugs – both have two round pins.
  2. As of March 2019, Visas are not required for U.S. Citizens looking to travel to Ukraine for tourism, for those staying less than 90 days in a 180 period. The same follows for Canadian citizens, British citizens, and European citizens.
  3. Credit cards and debit cards are still not widely accepted in Ukraine, especially in smaller shops/cafes. It’s best to grab some of the local currency, hryvnya (UAH). The coins (kopiyok) range from 1 kopiyka to UAH1, and the notes range from UAH1-UAH500.
  4. In most bigger cities in Ukraine, you’ll be able to find someone who speaks English. On the outskirts, it may be a bit more difficult, but the younger generations especially have a decent understanding of English.
  5. It is not advised to drink the tap water in Ukraine – purchase bottled water.
  6. It is common to tip around 10% in bars and restaurants.
  7. You can sometimes find awesome deals on airfare between major Ukraine cities. As the country is very large and spread out, this is an awesome option for those who are short on time and may not have the time to travel by train between cities.
  8. A majority of banks are only open Monday-Friday, with a few larger banks being open on Saturday. Consider exchanging cash before hand, just in case you run into ATM issues and don’t have immediate access to a bank.
