What travelers are saying

"This tour has amazing sites, good hotels in great locations, great pace BUT the tour director that was assigned to be with our small group added nothing to the experience. He did not give us any info, tell us about what we were seeing, give us any info at all. The only time he talked was to tell us when the next bathroom break would be. Apparently this is common for Globus to use retirees starting another chapter. Our guide was 76 and had no energy. Travel with Gate 1 or Intreped.... guides can make or break a tour."

What travelers are saying

"My first Avalon cruise/land tour to Vietnam/Cambodia was the best experience of my 80 plus cruises. We recently took the Avalon Egypt/Jordan cruise/land tour and it was the polar opposite. Most sites were awesome but the tour needed a guide in addition to the Egyptologist, who didn’t look out for the safety/best interests of the guests. I submitted a detailed review of Egypt and Jordan but have not yet heard back."

What travelers are saying

"BE WARNED THEY CHARGE 10% CANCELLATION WITH ANY CANCELLATION. We have 7 months before we leave for our trip and just made the reservation less than a week ago and they charged us the 10%. We are planning a 2 and half month backpacking trip and we were trying to plan our activities. We saw good reviews and made a reservation. After a few days we realized our plans had changed and needed to cancel. Even though the website states cancellations are okay they still charge a 10% cancellation fee. I just want to make sure anyone else who chooses Rabbie´s is aware they will be charged 10% even though it isn´t clear on the website itself. Happy travels."

Wales Tour Selection Trips

  • Watch for tours of England and Scotland that also include Wales – you won’t regret it
  • Wales is barely larger than the U.S. state of Massachusetts, so it’s compact enough to tour in a few days – but rich enough in attractions to spend a week or more
  • If it’s mountains and lightly populated countryside you seek, look for tours that go to northern Wales; most residents live in the south
  • Wales is officially bilingual, but most of those who still speak Welsh (and nearly a fifth of the 3 million population do) also speak English
  • The Welsh are proud of their historic Celtic culture; if you don’t want to spark a pub flight, avoid calling them “English”
  • You may want to time your visit for the annual eisteddfod, one of the world’s premier singing festivals

Additional details

Wales is a very bucolic and pleasant country to visit, dotted with castles, sheep, and beautiful countryside. It’s the perfect destination for a relaxing trip, popular amongst older travelers looking for something that is not too physically challenging. A majority of tours in Wales cater to this demographic.

Wales is also a hidden secret for anglophiles looking to explore deeper into Britain’s extensive and unique history.

Because Wales is so small, most tours in Wales will often cover very similar sights - but it’s important to note that tours focusing just on Wales are rare. More often you’ll see England tours that include Cardiff or other places of interest in Wales that are within close proximity to England. These tours typically focus more on England than Wales.

Hiking Tours in Wales

There are many sides to Wales, and one of them is extremely adventurous! Hiking and mountaineering are very popular activities in Wales, especially around Snowdonia National Park.

While you can go on your own, it’s advisable to visit with a guide as some paths can be quite dangerous if you’re not used to the weather and terrain.

What to Wear for Traveling in Wales

Like most of the UK, the weather in Wales can be unpredictable, but much less so than it’s northern and western neighbors. Waterproof layers, scarves, and hats are highly recommended for when that sharp wind or unforseen rainstorm comes up.

Depending on the kind of tour you’re on, it would be good to have some solid outdoors shoes with you. Even if your tour isn’t an adventure trip, you still may have the opportunity to do some short walks or hikes in the countryside. Not to mention exploring the many castles of Wales, which requires climbing stone steps and walking over stones and dirt.

Restaurants in Wales are generally pretty casual, though again depending on your tour, you may visit a fancy spot here and there. But generally these establishments are used to tourists who have limited space for nice attire.

What’s in a Welsh Breakfast?

When you visit Wales, there is a good chance you’ll spend at least a couple nights in guest houses where you’ll be treated to a classic Welsh breakfast. Much like a Scottish or English breakfast, the offering is hearty and full of protein; a great start to a busy day of touring!

The typical inclusions in a Welsh breakfast are: fried eggs, sausage and bacon, cooked tomatoes & mushrooms, and something called Laverbread.

Commonly spread on toast or crackers, Laverbread could be considered the vegemite of Wales. It has a very strong smell and flavor - so beware! Laverbread is essentially nothing more than heavily pureed seaweed, extremely healthy and full of vitamins and minerals. This delicacy is thoroughly enjoyed by the Welsh people, and is something you won’t find anywhere else.
