Where Can Canadians Travel Now

In the age of coronavirus, travel is looking different. One week all countries close their borders, the next some begin the reopening process. It can be frustrating and confusing with this never ending change in plans. However, there are still things to take heart in.

Countries are, in fact, reopening.

It’s not as plain and simple as that though. When countries reopen their borders, it's often to a select list of countries where they feel the coronavirus risk is low. One country that is open to the UK may not be open to Canada or Australia. One country may be open to all of them or even none of them.

Below are the countries specifically open to travelers coming from Canada as well as safety information, travel restrictions and what is open in each country.

Montenegro

Safety info

State Department advisory: Level 4 (Do Not Travel) 

CDC Alert Level: (Very High Level of COVID-19)

There is currently a Level 4 advisory against traveling to Montenegro due to COVID-19. No other safety risks are currently listed.

Travel restrictions: There are no mandatory coronavirus tests or quarantines for travelers from Canada. Travelers should note that without entry restrictions they may be at higher risk of contracting COVID-19 because there is no screening to tell if other visitors are entering the country with the virus.

What’s open: All non-essential businesses are closed. A nationwide curfew from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. remains in effect.

Coronavirus situation: Montenegro has had 71,995 cases overall with 950 deaths and 62,825 recoveries. There were 402 new cases reported on February 22.


Bermuda

Safety info

State Department advisory: Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) 

CDC Alert Level: (Very High Level of COVID-19)

There is currently a Level 3 advisory against traveling to Bermuda due to COVID-19. No other safety risks are currently listed.

Travel restrictions: Travelers will need to present a negative status on a coronavirus test as well as undergo airport health screenings upon arrival. There is a short mandatory quarantine. All visitors are required to wear an electronic Traveler Wristband for 14 days which costs $300. 

What’s open: Restaurants, museums, hotels and pools have all reopened to visitors. A nationwide curfew is in effect from 12 a.m. to 5 a.m.

Coronavirus situation: Bermuda has had 699 cases overall with 12 deaths and 679 recoveries. There were zero new cases on February 22.


Aruba

Safety info

State Department Advisory: Level 3 (Reconsider Travel)

CDC alert level: (Very High Level of COVID-19)

There is currently a Level 3 advisory against traveling to Aruba due to COVID-19. No other safety risks are currently listed.

Travel restrictions: Travelers will need to present a negative status on a coronavirus test upon arrival and have purchased COVID-19 health insurance. There is no mandatory quarantine at this time. 

What’s open: Many resorts among other businesses and tourist attractions have reopened for visitors. A nationwide curfew is in effect from 12 a.m. to 5 a.m.

Coronavirus situation: Aruba has had 7,674 cases overall with 71 deaths and 7,323 recoveries. There were 27 new cases reported on February 22.

Saint Lucia

Safety info

State Department Advisory: Level 3 (Reconsider Travel)

CDC Alert Level: 4 (Very High Level of COVID-19)

There is currently a Level 3 advisory against traveling to Saint Lucia and Nevis due to COVID-19. No other safety risks are currently listed.

Travel restrictions: Travelers will need to present a negative status on a coronavirus test taken no more than 5 days before travel and undergo airport health screenings upon arrival. They will also need to be approved for travel by the government and book accommodation at a COVID safe hotel. 

What’s open: Many hotels and resorts have reopened including Sandals Grande St Lucian, Ladera and Sugar Beach, AViceroy Resort.

Coronavirus situation: Saint Lucia has had 3,078 cases overall with 31 deaths and 2,534 recoveries. There were 218 new cases reported on February 22.

South Korea

Safety info

State Department Advisory: Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution)

CDC Alert Level: 2 (Moderate Level of COVID-19)

Travelers are advised to exercise increased caution when traveling to South Korea due to COVID-19. No other safety warnings are currently in place.

Travel restrictions: Travelers will need to provide a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 72 hours of departure and undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

What’s open: South Korea has reopened nearly all businesses, restaurants and hotels. Some local restrictions may remain depending on the area.

Coronavirus situation: South Korea has had 87,324 cases overall with 1,562 deaths and 77,887 recoveries. There were 332 new cases reported on February 22.

Cambodia

Safety info: 

State Department advisory: Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution) 

CDC Alert Level: (Practice Usual Precautions)

Travelers should exercise increased caution if traveling to Phnom Penh due to crime or very remote areas of Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Pursat, Siem Reap, Pailin, and Kampong Thom provinces due to land mines. Street crime such as phone and bag theft often occur where foreigners gather.

Travel restrictions: Travelers will need to present a negative status on a coronavirus test and quarantine for 14 days. They must also pay a deposit of $2,000 for mandatory testing, accomodation and potential medical treatment.

What’s open: Temples like Angkor Wat are still open to the public. 

Coronavirus situation: Cambodia has had 568 cases overall with zero deaths and 475 recoveries. There were 35 new cases reported on February 22.
