Description |
Baphumelele was founded in 1989 when Rosalia Mashale (“Rosie”) began caring for children in the neighborhood. Baphumelele (pronounced: ba-poo-meh-leh-leh) is a Xhosa word meaning “you have progressed,” and indeed the organization itself has progressed from caring for a few children to providing services for the entire community. The programs at this community organization include a large daycare, preschool, kindergarten, orphanage, medical care program for children and adults, in-home hospice care, a bakery and soup kitchen, and two vocational training programs: a woodshop and a farm. |
Enjoy this bespoke 11 day LuxVenture safari to South Africa designed and operated by the experts at Ker & Downey Africa. You will participate in an incredible array of cultural and adventurous experiences, including a Cape Town jazz experience, bicycle tours, hot air ballooning above the Cape Winelands, as well as one of South Africa's most authentic and natural experiences - sleeping under the stars in a treehouse in the Kruger National Park. |

Volunteer activities at Baphumelele include: helping out in the preschool/kindergarten, helping to care for patients in the medical programs, cooking in the bakery and soup kitchen, assisting in the woodshop, or working in the garden at their nearby farm.
