Itinerary: Voyages to Antiquity: Spain and Morocco, Ancient Neighbors

Day 1: In Transit to Program

In Flight

Day 2: Arrive Madrid

Meals: Dinner

Accommodation: Meliá Galgos

Activity note: Check-in available from 2:00 PM

Afternoon: Upon arrival at the hotel, check in and get your room assignment. The Group Leader will be on hand to provide assistance as needed. Then take some time to freshen up and relax before Orientation. We will gather at 6:00 PM in the hotel lobby and proceed to our meeting room. The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the program theme, the up-to-date Daily Schedule and any changes, discuss safety guidelines, emergency procedures, roles and responsibilities, and answer any questions you may have. We have set aside free time in the schedule for your personal independent exploration. Please be aware that program activities, schedules, and personnel may need to change due to local circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Dinner: At a local restaurant, enjoy a 3-course meal including wine, coffee, tea, water.

Evening: At leisure. Continue getting to know your fellow participants, settle in, and get a good night’s rest for the day ahead.

Day 3: Madrid, Spain

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner

Accommodation: Meliá Galgos

Breakfast: In the hotel dining room. On this program, breakfasts will offer a typical European style breakfast buffet with breads, cheeses, cold-cuts, yogurt, fruit, cereals, juice, milk, coffee, tea and water.

Morning: In the company of a local expert, enjoy a morning panoramic motorcoach overview of Madrid including Paseo de la Castellana, Madrid's chic modern district, the Paseo del Prado, also known as the Triangle of Art, the Plaza de Cibeles and Town Hall, La Gran Vía, Madrid's theatre district, and Almudena Cathedral. Visit the Prado Museum which holds one of the world's finest collections of European art. The magnificent building, conceived and designed in 1785, first housed the collection of the Spanish crown. It opened to the public as Spain’s national art museum in 1819. With thousands upon thousands of paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings, other works and historic documents, only a small portion of these vast collections are on display at any given time. Highlights include masterpieces of the French, German, and Italian schools, early Flemish works, and the finest collection of works by Spanish grand masters such as El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, and many more. One of the most famous paintings in the museum is “Las Meninas” -- the family of King Felipe IV -- by Velázquez.

Lunch: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions and give directions.

Afternoon: You are welcome to join the Group Leader on an informal excursion to the Plaza Mayor, explore on your own, or return to the hotel and relax. This genesis of this most distinguished public space in Madrid dates back to the 1560s, when the king instructed his chief architect to turn the existing marketplace into a regal square. It was not completed until 1617 and then all the buildings surrounding it burned down on three separate occasions before the stately design we see today was implemented. The Plaza Mayor has been the site of royal coronations, great celebrations, and mass events such as the infamous autos-da-fé of the Inquisition. At its center is a bronze statue of King Philips III, cast in 1616. Moving on, we reach Puerta del Sol, one of the most well known local landmarks. Originally named for the gate in the city wall that surrounded Madrid in the 15th century, now the city's busiest plaza and the center of the Spanish road system, from which all distances are measured.

Dinner: Our dinner this evening is preceded by an introduction to Flamenco with a presentation and a demonstration followed by a simple tapas dinner with wine and a Flamenco performance.

Evening: At leisure.

Day 4: Train to Seville, Spain

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner

Accommodation: Meliá Sevilla

Breakfast: In the hotel dining room.

Morning: This morning we transfer by coach to Madrid's Atocha station and board a high-speed train to Seville. This is one of the most picturesque high-speed routes in Europe. The roughly 300 mile journey takes approximately 2 1/2 hours with the AVE traveling at speeds of up to 193 miles per hour.

Lunch: On your own, likely on the train or at the station.

Afternoon: Check-in to hotel and enjoy some time for relaxing before our next field trip. With your Group Leader walk to nearby Maria Luisa Park and the impressive Plaza de España, built for the World Expo in 1929, and a fine example of typical Sevillan architecture and incorporating traditional Andalucían ceramic tile.

We will visit its cathedral, the largest Gothic cathedral – and the third largest church – in the world. In 1898 it became the final resting place of Christopher Columbus. Next, we will explore the extraordinary Alcázar Royal Palace and gardens. This UNESCO listed World Heritage Site incorporates architectural and artistic influences from its beginnings as a Moorish fort into the Middle Ages and on through the Renaissance and Baroque eras to the 19th century. Still used by the royal family, it is the oldest royal palace in Europe and one of the most beautiful with its striking Mudéjar (Moorish influenced) design and ornamentation.
