The remarkable untouched islands of Thailand

When most people think of Thailand, they think of tourist hotspots known around the world like Bangkok and Phuket. However, these places are packed with thousands of tourists, most of them partying until the sun comes up.

If you are one of those people who prefers an offbeat experience instead of battling over a spot on a beach, here are eight islands that should be on your travel bucket list.

1. Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe is one of those islands where you are sure to get a spot on the beach. It is a little slice of paradise in the tropics and one of Thailand’s treasure islands that has barely been touched by tourism.

Another highlight of Koh Lipe is that it offers one of Thailand’s most spectacular diving sites. These waters are not only a stunning shade of green, but they are also home to some unique species such as sperm whales and dugongs.

2. Koh Tao

Koh Tao is another one of the better diving destinations in Thailand. It is full of supreme mountains and jungle hiking spots with luscious greenery that looks good no matter what kind of photo you take. In addition, there are plenty of secluded sandy beaches to lounge on or go for a dip even if you don’t like diving.

In Koh Tao, the best thing about diving is the whale sharks you can swim with in the sparkling blue waters. Remember, if you do enjoy outdoor adventures, always check the weather. The climate in Thailand can be highly changeable with all different types of storms that blow in the ocean.

3. Sukhothai

Sukhothai takes a different approach to the forested jungled islands listed above. It was one of the first ancient capitals of Thailand and is home to one of the many UNESCO world heritage structures around the country. In addition, it has more than 200 temple ruins and historical sites.

Although you would think a place as beautiful and historically rich as this would have plenty of tourists, it is located in the lower north portion of Thailand so it isn’t as popular (most tourists head south). When you get there, you’ll want to rent a bike since cycling is the easiest way to get around the island.

4. Koh Phangan

Suppose you are looking for an island with a diverse amount of activities- that’s what Koh Phangan is for. It has what some would call a dual personality. First, it’s an idyllic setting with lazy beaches, jungle hikes and turquoise waters. Part of the island is just about abandoned, so you’ll have to hike to these parts.

The rest of the island transforms at night into a wild party. It has one of the best party venues for insane fire stunts and deafening music scenarios. Whether enjoying nature or partying hard, you can find what you want to do on this island.

5. Koh Chang

Koh Chang is practically unheard of as an island in the Eastern Thailand region. The island is primarily jungle due to undevelopment. For many travelers who want an experience away from the crowds, Koh Chang is the place for you. It is a great spot to go for hikes and find hidden trails. They often lead towards waterfalls that form some of the bluest pools you’ll ever encounter.

Many islands are a part of Mu Ko Chang National Marine Park, and this includes Koh Chang. So it goes without saying that scuba diving in those sparkling waters will be a spectacular experience.

6. Kanchanaburi

Kanchanaburi is another island that stands out from the rest. It reflects more of the history of Thailand than other jungled islands. It is one of those that history buffs will enjoy since it is populated with many ancient villages. The island’s biggest claim to fame is the bridge built by Allied POWs as a part of the “Death Railway,” formally known as the Thai-Burmese railway.

The island is covered in nationally important landmarks and wartime memorials. You might also find yourself covered by dense jungles in scenic national parks or rowing beside riverside villages. There is even a seven-tiered waterfall within Erawan National Park.

7. Khao Lak

Khao Lak is ideal for the quiet beach vacation that everyone needs every couple of years. However, if you don’t want to sacrifice comfort, this is an even better choice. It features some resorts and mellow nightlife scenes alongside beautiful national parks.

Golden sand beaches rim the island. Nearby, there are tropical jungles and the Thai hallmark, beautiful waterfalls. The island Khao Lak also serves as the base for one of the world-class dive sites of the Surin and Similan Islands.

8. Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta is a classic example of untouched beaches and clear waters. Hike up to the lighthouse at the tip of the island to get an incredible view of the island and turquoise waters.

Travelers that come to lounge on beaches like to watch the sunset and chill alongside beachside bars. If you enjoy spending time in nature, try kayaking through dense mangroves or spelunking in hidden caves.
