I volunteered with GVI in Thailand for two weeks in July 2017. When I arrived, the second I left the cool, manageable temperatures of the airport and stepped out into the heat of Phuket was incredible, I felt physically hit by the atmosphere! The heat itself was nearly unbearable (especially considering I was wearing trousers and a long sleeved top!) and I almost immediately broke out in a sweat. Luckily, we soon found the GVI representatives who were standing with a banner with our names on and we were whisked away in a minibus ready to begin our first day in Thailand! When we arrived at the resort we were to be staying in, I was blown away by the sheer beauty of the place! There were gorgeous palm trees lining the paths and a calm, blue lake in the centre. The villa itself was really lovely, simple, but in the best way. It was all wooden, with a veranda and chairs outside which later on were perfect for relaxing on after a hard days work! Shortly afterwards, we headed out for a tour of the village which we would be working in. I learnt a lot of things about the local culture such as the fact that ‘birds nest soup’ is an expensive delicacy in Thailand and so the village has four large concrete buildings which constantly play birdsong in order to attract swallows which will nest there. Also, Thai people also have things called ‘Spirit houses’ which is essentially a miniature hut, slightly larger than a bird table, which they fill with gifts for the spirits who lived in the house before them in order to appease them so they will not haunt the house. As the group of volunteers were walking around, lots of small Thai children came rushing out of their houses to greet us! Apparently they love to test their English and so they will run over and and say ‘Hello’ to any of the foreigners! As we were heading back to the resort, my friend Sasha and I spotted two young Thai boys playing football, so we headed over and started up a brief conversation. I had learnt a small amount of Thai before I left so I found out they were called Ti and Po. We then had a miniature kick about in the street for a good ten minutes or so. It’s amazing how something like sport can connect people from completely different cultures who can barely speak each other’s language. This experience, and a plethora of others which I had during my time abroad, would not have occurred if it weren't for GVI and I would thoroughly recommend them to anyone in the future.

I was a six month intern at GVI Thailand elephant conservation project and t was amazing, to see the different way people live and to be submerged in that was awesome. The people and children are so happy and have such a united sense of community. To see these beautiful elephants living in the forest and to know you are helping them is one of he best feelings ever. They are so intelligent and just to be around them was a dream.

Super fun! First time here with our 1 year old son and he enjoyed it and it even made us feel like kids again since we were able to join him in the play area! Food was ok for the price. Surprised that the pizza tasted better than some cheap pizza shops. But overall we would definitely make the trip back to this place.

We were extremely happy with how each and every minor/major logistics were taken care of during our entire trip to Peru. Starting from the planning phase, Andrew and Garvey of Lost World were with us revising the itinerary multiple times until it met with our comfort level. This was our very first time of hiring a professional travel agency for organizing our vacation at the international location, so you can imagine the degree of anxiety we had about our trip at the beginning. Andrew kept assuring us that you will know as soon as you reach there that you are in good hands. That turned out to be true word-by-word. At every airport we were met with someone who was assigned to take us to the hotels, and each time the individual left only after making sure that we were all set. Throughout our trip we always find the people attending us (the guides, transfer and drivers) very prompt, professional and courteous. One problem we experienced though that many a times the individuals assigned to us were not very proficient in English. This was quite limiting but nevertheless was countered with the help of google translator and very enthusiastic personnel who were genuinely eager to help. The guides (Natalie in Sacred valley and Cusco; Sergio at the Matchu Pitchu) who went with us to various excursion tours were knowledgeable, entertaining and very very friendly. The cars were in really great conditions, roomy and very clean - in fact one of the drivers used to keep the black synthetic floors spotless by wiping our dusty footprints every single time we stepped out. The location of each hotel was prime, which was truly important for us particularly when we were on tight schedule and has no clue about the orientation of touristy hot spots and down town plazas. Perhaps this is unique to the south american setting, but we struggled a little with the 'Vouchers' - something that you paid for that does not go in to the system automatically when you check-in at the hotels. However, our escorts/hotel front desk people were very much aware of it and they helped us almost all of those time. All of the city tour tickets were booked and given to us as soon as we landed in Peru. I want to mention that we were moved by Carlos, our transfer guy in Cusco, who went over on each single thing included in our itinerary while we were driving from the airport to the hotel on our first day. He did that so sincerely while also telling us about the people/history and geography of Peru. I also remember, he wanted to accompany us up to the Vistadome train, but was stopped at the gate (and desperately argued with them to let him do that). Our food restrictions were varied -from nothing to vegan- it was addressed meticulously at the lodge in Amazon Forests, without us reminding them about it. Other places already had appropriate options in their menus. Our itinerary was not overwhelmingly busy - it had some leisure times and times for shopping or just walking around on our own carefully planted, which we liked the most. At one point, we needed to cancel one of the excursion while there at Matchu Pitchu pretty late in the night (due to some health issues; we were supposed to be at the bus stop terribly early AM), we reached out to the emergency contact number of Lost World and they promptly and rapidly helped us with it. We can go on and on to tell you how much we enjoyed the excellent services provided by Lost World - it only enhanced our appreciation of Peru in its entirety.
Thank you so much, we appreciate all your help and look forward to go on to the next vacation with you.
