Machu Picchu in 7-10 days

Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

Perhaps the most classic Machu Picchu trip, walking the Inca Trail is a bucket list item for many. This is a challenging trip, but the reward is well worth the effort. Most Inca Trail treks take 4-5 days, though this varies.

Day 1-2, Cusco: Explore Cusco and get acclimated to the altitude. Visit cultural sites and museums to learn about the Inca before visiting Machu Picchu.

Day 3-8, Inca Trail: Embark upon the Inca trail.

Day 9-10, Machu Picchu: Arrive at the picturesque Sun Gate before the first wave of crowds. Take an in depth guided tour of the ruins, and spend free time exploring on your own. Climb the challenging Huayna Picchu for iconic pictures.

Historical Machu Picchu

One of the biggest draws of Machu Picchu is its historical significance. Most tours will touch on this, but some dive deeper than others into the archaeological history and cultural history of the incredible site.

Day 1-3, Cusco: Explore Cusco and get acclimated to the altitude. Visit cultural sites and museums to learn about the Inca before visiting Machu Picchu.

Day 4, Agua Calientes: Take the famous Scenic train ride to Agua Calientes. Spend the night and prepare to rise early to catch the dawn bus to Machu Picchu.

Day 5-6, Machu Picchu: Take an in depth guided tour of the ruins, and spend free time exploring on your own. Climb the challenging Huayna Picchu for iconic pictures.

Day 7, Ollantaytambo: On your way back to Cusco, stop in Ollantaytambo another historically significant Inca site.

Day 8, Lima: Depart from Lima

OR

Day 2-6, Official Treks: Strike out upon one of three treks, Lares, Salkantay, or Inca, on your way to the site.

Machu Picchu and the Galapagos

Many tour companies combine a trip to Machu Picchu with a tour of the Galapagos. Typically these tours range anywhere from two weeks to a full month.

Day 1-2, Cusco: Take time to adjust to the altitude. Visit Plaza de Armas, and explore the Old Inca Capital.

Day 2-3, Agua Calientes: Take the famous VistaDome scenic train ride to Agua Calientes. Along the way stop in Pisac to visit the market. Continue to Ollantaytambo for a tour of more Incan ruins before arriving in Agua Calientes. Spend the night and prepare to rise early to catch the dawn bus to Machu Picchu.

Day 4-5, Machu Picchu: Take an in depth guided tour of the ruins, and spend free time exploring on your own. Optional: climb the challenging Huayna Picchu for iconic pictures.

Day 6-7, Cusco to Lima: Return to Cusco and take a short flight to Lima - the jumping off point for your Galapagos cruise. Take a walking history tour of the city: San Francisco Church, Plaza de Armas, Government Palace.

Day 8, Quito: Leave Peru for Ecuador and head to Quito. Explore the city and see La Compania. Take a drive to the Equatorial Line Monument, where you can straddle the hemispheres.

Day 9-13, Galapagos Cruise: Enjoy a cruise of the Galapagos islands. Take in the history of Darwin’s time on the islands, which led to his groundbreaking evolution theories. Get up close and personal with wildlife as incredible and diverse as what you would see on a trip to Costa Rica, and learn about the delicate ecology on the islands from an expert.

Peru In Depth and the Inca Trail
This trip 'Peru In depth and the Inca trail' was the perfect length of time to spend after a long haul flight. It also meant that we were properly acclimatised by the time we began the trekking. Highlights of the trip were:- entering the Sun Gate to Machu Picchu and seeing the sun temple gradually revealed through the clouds, the mighty condors in the Colca canyon, the Nasca lines in the desert, walking in the Pacific Ocean with the desert around us. The expertise of the guides and our trekking leader Darwin who was calm and kind at all times, the camaraderie of the group, camping high up in the Andes with llamas wandering around and the starry sky with no light pollution......... or internet, maybe that would put you off, if so this is not for you!

Peru In Depth and the Inca Trail
What a wonderful way to see Peru! This was a long but such as varied and exciting trip. We started the trip in Lima (a busy and bustling city with lots to see) and the first third of the trip made our way along the coast with unique Martian views at Paracas national park and bountiful wildlife at Las Ballestas Island. Arequipa, Puno and the Colca Valley provided a beautiful way to acclimatise to the higher altitude. Lake Titicaca was definitely a highlight - such a unique way of life. This part of our trip allowed to learn about the history of Peru through its customs, architecture and landscape.

Finally the Inca Trek was the pinnacle of the trip. A once in a lifetime opportunity and definitely a challenging but rewarding opportunity. Special Thank you to the team of porters, who made this possible. Chef Julian and Mario provided such delicious food that fuelled us to the end! Thank you too to all the guides and drivers that got us from place to place and gave us a great introduction to each region. Thank you above all else to our tour leader Darwin who not only managed the group from start to end and made sure we got to all our activities and locations but also provided entertainment and friendship along the way!

Overall our trip was filled with otherworldly views and scenery, unique culture, rich history, amazing pisco sours and even better people!

Peru In Depth and the Inca Trail
A very full and comprehensive trip with an array of interesting guides contributing their local knowledge along the way, and a nice small friendly group of people. The trip is very well planned to acclimatise and prepare participants for the highlight Inca (trekking/camping) Trail at the end which was tremendous - and excellently lead and presented by explore leader Darwin. Other highlight for me was the stay on tranquil and remote Taquile Island on lake Titicaca ( where my phone registered Bolivian time!). In order to explore the depth and breadth of the country, the trip does include some long stretches by bus. There are not many group evening meals which might not suit every solo traveler. In the itinerary notes, the option to climb Machu Picchu mountain is a little bit incidental and does need to be pre-booked so it would be good if that was made more aware to people at time of booking the Inca Trail pass. Otherwise a wonderful and recommendable trip.

Peru In Depth and the Inca Trail
The Peru In Depth and the Inca Trail felt like several separate trips all in one. This required a lot of organization of our Leader Darwin to keep the tour on the right track, and all of us at the right place at the right time, while always keeping us entertained.

By the time we got to the Inca trail, all of us were well acclimatized to manage the walking. The support from our leader and the porters made it possible for the team. A special mention to the amazing cooks that provided us with the excellent food that gave us the energy and morale to keep going when it got tough (best food on the trip in my opinion).

I am amazed at the porters speed and stoicism while carrying unbelievable weights over such long distances. It is a humbling experience watching these porters work. Together with Darwin, who kept the overall logistics of the trip, they make the perfect team.

Our tour leader was also very knowledgeable, with a well informed answer to almost any question about Peru geography, geology, modern politics, modern history and ancient history. He was very kind, and gentle when we needed support. He was very humorous when we needed a laugh (he seems to be very well understood with our type of "English" humor). I left thoroughly impressed with the number of hats he wears, and to such an expert level.
