Moldova in 7-10 days

Moldova may be a small country, but that doesn’t mean it’s not packed with adventure, history, and amazing sites. There are tours of Moldova only, but because of its location in Eastern Europe you’ll often find it paired with other Eastern European countries, such as Ukraine and Romania.

Below are just a few of the amazing itineraries of Moldova you can go on to discover this unique country.

Eastern European Tours

Discover the diverse and historic region of Eastern Europe on this 15-day tour that delves into the mysterious forests of Romania, the historical monuments of Chisinau, and the long history of Ukraine

Day 1, Bucharest: Start off your Eastern European journey in the capital of Romania before heading through the Carpathian Mountains to tour one of the most splendid castles in Europe, Peles Castle. 

Day 2, Bran: Jump into the spooky tales of Dracula as you visit Bran and Dracula’s Castle in the heart of Transylvania.

Day 3, Lacu Rosu: Head out into the countryside of Romania where you will stop at the Neculai Popa Museum (folk museum) and the “Sistine Chapel of the East,” Voronet. 

Day 4, Bucovina: Take a step back into Romania’s religious history by visiting the “upper land” and touring many of the monasteries, palaces, and cathedrals that were prominent hundreds of years ago. 

Day 5, Travel and Chisinau: It’s a travel day from Romania into the beautiful country of Moldova. You’ll stop in the country’s capital of Chisinau and if time permits you can explore Milesti Mici, the largest underground wine city in Europe. 

Day 6, Tiraspol: Drive to Tiraspol and Transnistria, a strip of land between Moldova and Ukraine that is almost an autonomous country, but isn’t recognized by any government. 

Day 7, Travel: It’s another travel day from Moldova to Odessa, the capital of Ukraine. 

Day 8, Odessa: It’s a free day to explore Odessa, you can visit the Odessa Catacombs, the old palace of the Lev Tolstoy family, the Palace of Chess, or see the many stunning pieces of Mediterranean architecture in this Eastern European country. 

Day 9, Travel and Kiev: Travel to Kiev. On your way, make a pitstop at Pervomaysk, which was once a nuclear weapon launch site. 

Day 10, Kiev or Chernobyl: An option day between touring the streets of Kiev or taking an interesting tour of Pripyat, a city on the fringe of the Chernobyl disaster that nature has begun to take back. 

Day 11, Kiev and Lviv: Take a tour of Kiev and visit the main attractions of the Monastery of St. Michael, churches of St. Sofia and Andrew, and the National Opera. 

Day 12, Lviv: It’s time to tour one of the most beautiful cities in Eastern Europe. Lviv is a combination of different architecture styles from Gothic to Roman to Baroque, all coming together in this cultural center. 

Day 13, Flight: Fly to Minsk.

Day 14, Minsk: Take the morning to tour Minsk before heading out to visit the Nesvizh Castle, the home of the Radswill Family for 400 years and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

Day 15, Departure: Depart for home.

Moldova and Ukraine

It’s hard to not think of Moldova and Ukraine together because of their uniquely shared past and common cultures. However, each has their own distinct experiences and this tour gives you an opportunity to explore one of the world’s least-visited, but one of the most interesting countries in the world, Moldova.  

Day 1, Chisinau: Fly to Chisinau. 

Day 2, Chisinau: Start your tour off with a walking tour of Chisinau and tour this city that dates back to the 1400s, but was rebuilt in the Soviet-style after WWII. This city has a unique blend of Soviet buildings with hidden gems like the Winter Circus and the Triumphal Arch. 

Day 3, Transnistria: It’s a full-day trip to Transnistria, a self-declared republic that maintains livelihood that was under Communist times. Travel to Odessa in the evening. 

Day 4, Odessa: Odessa is a stunning city on the Black Sea that was created when Catherine the Great invited different cultures to the city, giving it a unique feel compared to other Eastern European cities. 

Day 5, Lviv: Tour the historic old town of this stunning city that is a mix of Polish, Hungarian, Jewish, and Armenian histories and cultures. 

Day 6, Travel: Travel to Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. If time permits, you can head out on your own to tour some of the major attractions. 

Day 7, Kiev: Start your morning with a walking tour and enjoy a free afternoon that allows you to tour some more of this city, such as the National Museum of History or the Pechersk Lavra Monastery. 

Day 8, Departure: Depart back home.

Soviet Eastern Europe

Eastern Europe has such a strong tie to it’s Soviet past. Many of the countries are still coming into their own after the fall of the USSR, Moldova being one of them. This themed-tour offers you a chance to learn more about these countries during this interesting time of history and where they are now. 

Day 1, Minsk: Fly into Minsk. 

Day 2, Minsk: Go sightseeing through Minsk, a city that was a Soviet-designed city that has embraced more modern times with beautiful parks, boulevards, and an open-air folk life museum. 

Day 3, Brest: Head out to Brest, the “gate” to Western Belarus that changed hands between Western and Eastern Europe which has given the city a unique culture combination. 

Day 4, Brest: Tour more of Brest with stops along the way at the Museum of Railway Equipment, Brest Forest, and a national park that is the last remaining part of a primeval forest that used to stretch across Eastern Europe. 

Day 5, Mir: Transfer to the small town of Mir, where you’ll visit the historic Mir Castle that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site before you head back to Minsk and then to Kiev. 

Day 6, Kiev: It’s a full-day tour of Kiev, where you will visit St. Sophia Church and monastery, St. Andrews Church, the Golden Gates of Kiev, and the Museum of Great Patriotic War. 

Day 7, Chernobyl: A day trip to Chernobyl and Pripyat will give you a once in a lifetime experience to see a city and area that is slowly recovering from a nuclear disaster and where nature is taking back the region. 

Day 8, Mezhyhirya Palace: Once the home of the Ukranian president Viktor Yanukovych, the palace is now open to tours where visitors can see how the president lived. 

Day 9, Travel: Travel between Kiev and Odessa by making a stop at the Museum of Strategic Rocket Forces that was once home to nuclear weapons and missiles. 

Day 10, Odessa: Tour the “Pearl of the Black Sea” that is teaming with arts and culture and explore the depths of the Catacombs of Odessa, that were once mines and used by smugglers underneath the sea. 

Day 11, Chisinau: Head from Odessa to Chisinau, the capital of Moldova that was once a monastery village, was destroyed by an earthquake, and rebuilt in Soviet-inspired architecture. 

Day 12, Cricova: While Moldova is known for its Soviet past, it is also known for its luxurious and fine wine. Take a day tour to visit Cricova, a winery that features massive underground tunnels and cellars full of wine. 

Day 13, Tiraspol: Step back in time to the days of the USSR, by visiting Tiraspol, the capital of Transnistria, where the feelings and culture of that time are still held on to. 

Day 14, Departure: Depart for home.
