Italian culture, dialects, and food are very regional specific. Participating in a food tour will help highlight this.
American-Italian food tends to be heavier than most of the fare you’ll find in the motherland. Pasta is generally not dry and boxed, pizza crust is very thin, and sauces are less heavy.
Italian food can be high in starch, gluten, and carbohydrates. If you have dietary restrictions, let your guide know as far in advance as possible.
Be open to new tastes and traditions. Meals in Italy are a celebrated, communal, family affair. Enjoy it!
When wine tasting, it can be very easy to not realize how quickly the pours add up. If you’re cognizant of how much you’re drinking you and your tour companions will enjoy the day much more.
Breakfast food is fairly basic in Italy- Don’t expect enormous meals in the morning. Just a simple biscotti with an espresso is perfect.
Ordering coffee in Italy can be nerve-wracking. There’s an entire culture surrounding it, from when to drink (cappuccino is strictly a morning drink) to how to drink properly (usually standing at the bar and quickly). And if you order a latte, you will be served a large glass of milk rather than your desired concoction (caffe con latte).
Be prepared for coffee fundamentals - Starbucks variations and syrups are not to be found.
