What travelers are saying

"The most beautiful holiday country I have ever visited All that I've seen, far exceeded my expectations. Especially the gorillas. We had a fantastic guide Anthony Kato. He brought us each day along bumpy, smooth and non asphalted roads to our lodge. Most lodges I found good. Our guide has told much about Uganda, such as habits, tradition, the population and so on. Thought it was clever that he knew a lot about the animals in the park. I got through his explanation a very different and positive image of Uganda. Sure to recommend Uganda and Scenic Trails Safaris to others."

What travelers are saying

"73 days from Nairobi, Kenya to Cape Town, South Africa, Jan through Mar Do you enjoy people not following rules that affect you directly? Disregard of 10pm curfew, smoking and noise restrictions, or environmental welfare? Recurring theft of your well-marked belongings (food, drinks, power cords, etc.)? Repeat damages to your stuff due to negligence (sleeping bag, backpacks, etc.)? Incessant juvenile jokes about farts, vomit, drunkenness, burps, sex, or making fun of others? Constant loud music rather than enjoyment of nature? Purposeful ignoring of guide’s requests to the extent that it may endanger you… Person buying drugs in broad daylight and near cop – you could be made guilty by association Person drinking while driving, guilty by association if open container found by authorities Lack of food because some people abuse how much they take or stash away Waiting for the people who are not prepared, not following the schedule or could care less that they are enjoying themselves while you WAIT – hey you paid the same price, but they enjoy while you WAIT People not sharing the workload saying they have more important things to do like washing hair, downloading pictures, making phone calls. Once again you paid the same price, but they enjoy while you WORK People who make you miss optional events you sign up for because they came back too late or crossed your name out of events you have signed up for replacing it with their own? People claiming that they don’t have money to give tips (the way many survive in Africa) while they carry thousands of dollars of equipment, have money for drinks every night, buy drugs, give each other’s birthday gifts, etc. Embarrassing to be associated with these uncaring people. What bad reputation! People pushing elder of a village out of the way to take picture? Others entering locals’ homes without asking? Clearly invading their privacy, acting as if these people don’t matter. People refusing to share tents, storage areas, workload, space to take pictures, etc. The me, me, me syndrome leading to people being hurt due to pushing to be there first, etc. Most of this could have been address by the guide but he chose not to be involved so it festered for 73 days, making the bullies get all they wanted and the non-bullies, second citizens – incredibly sad. THANKFULLY, Africa, its people and nature are AMAZING, and you push that aside long enough to enjoy it until you return to the bus and face the sad reality of your tour cohorts. Overall, this felt like a race to the bottom or the lowest common denominator instead of an uplifting experience."

Visits

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, Kibale National Park, Murchison Falls National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Rift Valley

Highlights

  • Lake Mburo : Lake Mburo is only place in southern Uganda to see zebra. It’s also the only park in the country with impala, slender mongoose and giant bush rat, and is a great place to look for leopard, topi and eland. Furthermore, some excellent news is that a family of lions has retuned to the park after being absent for more than a decade
  • Adjacent to the park are the ranches of people of the Bahima tribe, who herd the famed long-horned Ankole cattle, which are a common sight here (all too often inside as well as outside the park).
  • Bwindi Forest: Home to almost half of the world’s surviving mountain gorillas, the World Heritage-listed Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of Africa’s most famous national parks. Set over 331 sq km of mountain rainforest, the park is home to an estimated 360 gorillas: undoubtedly Uganda’s biggest tourist drawcard
  • Ishasha Sector: The Ishasha sector is notably recognized for its resident Tree climbing lions that are an exceptional attraction and one among the highlights on all safaris taken within Queen Elizabeth National park. In the southern section of this park, the Lions are now and again spotted hanging on braches of huge fig trees whereas the Uganda Kob (which are the major food to these lions) graze in the plains of the Ishasha sector.
  • Kibale Forest: Kibale Forest is a lush tropical rainforest, believed to have the highest density of primates in Africa. This 795-sq-km national park is home to 13 primate species, including the rare red colobus and L’Hoest’s monkey. Chimpanzees can be heard throughout the forest, three groups of which have been habituated to human contact.

Uganda Tour Selection Trips

  • Be sure to book with a reliable licensed tour operator, especially if you want to see mountain gorillas. Experienced guides know where the gorillas are likely to be on any given day.
  • It can take up to six hours to find gorillas in the steep rainforest, making it a physically challenging expedition, with chimpanzees even more elusive..
  • Itineraries allowing multiple days for chances to find the gorillas and chimpanzees -- who are wild, after all -- will offer a more relaxed pace and insure you get the quality face/lens time you want with these magnificent cousins.
  • Permits to track mountain gorillas are expensive, so check to see if they’re included in the price of your safari to avoid unpleasant surprises.
  • Roads in Uganda can range from bad to worse.  Be prepared for back-twisting, neck-jarring rides -- and if you’re susceptible to motion sickness, take along some medication.
  • Accommodations can be comfortable but quite basic. A shower may mean hot water poured into a roof-top bucket which drips down upon you below.  Make sure your lodgings meet your minimum comfort level.
  • Because they operate on solar power, jungle lodges and tent camps may have limited – or no -- facilities for charging camera, computer or other types of batteries. Take along extras and keep them charged at every opportunity..
  • While Uganda’s climate is generally equatorial, it can change quickly at higher altitudes. Check the typical temperature range and rainfall where you’re going – then come prepared for unexpected changes.
  • Take along an adequate supply of prescription drugs and anything else that you will, or may, need for your health or comfort, because you may not find them in Uganda.
  • Kidepo National Park near the South Sudan border is remote enough to be one of Africa’s best kept secrets, with savannah, mountains, and lots of wildlife; not every guided trip goes there, so check your tour operator’s itinerary if it’s on your must-do list.
  • White water rafting on the White Nile can be an adrenaline blast, but it’s not offered on all itineraries; check different operators to see if their style is sedate cruising or action-oriented.

Packing List for Uganda

Uganda is situated on the equator, which means a lot of hot weather and rain, sometimes both at the same time. Pack light clothes, like cotton shirts, tees and a khakis. A sweater for the chilly nights.

A backpack for your daily adventures. A pair of good shoes that you can hike with, a bathing suit, a pair of sunglasses, and of course a camera to capture the amazing wildlife.
